Ch 19

IF I WEIGH NINETY NINE POUNDS, AND I EAT ONE POUND BANANA, AM I ONE PERCENT BANANA. -Phoenix rider (IRL friend)

It didn't take long for the hybrids set up Scar-land as a second base. No real construction had been done, but it was still defended, serving as a new meeting point now the vault was too small and penetrable. Which would've been fine except the fact that Cub was still hiding deep within the storage system, trapped,  listening as Ren spoke to the group.

'We are at war. The non-hybrids have refused the deal we had planned and now look to kill us. We must be prepared for ambush, spies, or even threats to our new identities as hybrids.' It wasn't too long since the deal failed, but everyone knew about it. And as everyone had expected when the hybrids allied, all authority and real power become Ren's as Pearl and Doc's lessened each day.

'They must be stopped.' As Pearl spoke, Cub fazed through another wall into one of the shops Scar had built... Watching through the glazed windows at the phantom's declaration, he saw Gem and False behind, nodding in agreement.

'They'll die to our hands or we declare our alliance invalid and get them ourselves to increase our own numbers.'

Cub broke into the light, darting across the street as Ren spoke again, assuring they would be victorious next time... Bdubs growled, and Pearl stepped away, False and Gem already there to protect her... No one notices as Cub got safe to the other side. And then paused. A winged shadow watched from the air, standing on the roof of the buildings, a silhouette against the sun. Watching him. Grian.

And by this point, he wasn't the only one.

Scar was staring at him. And began walking over.

Cub ran again, into the closest shop... Scar was already in close pursuit, only stopping to signal something to Tango. As the vex reached him, Cub turned, arms raised in surrender.

'You don't have to do this.' He pleaded. 'Pretend I'm not here and let me go free.'

'Ren would kill me. Or he'd get Xisuma to ban me.'

'Ren doesn't have to know.'

Silence. Cub backed further into the shop, reaching for a bow. He needed to be ready for a fight. For when Scar attacked.

'You don't trust me.' He said suddenly. 'After all of this you don't trust me.'

'I don't trust them.' Both of them knew what Cub meant. 'So I can't trust you.'

'Cub, please. I can't do this alone.' The desperation in Scar's eyes grew as he stepped closer.

'Then don't do it!' Despite the situation, Cub laughed. 'Scar, you can just join me and Grian.'

'Grian wants you gone. He made the deal to get rid of you. And he doesn't like me any more. Not now they killed me and made me into a monster.'

'He made the deal...' But Cub couldn't find a reason. 'He made the deal to save the rest of them. And Grian doesn't hate you. He just knows... You're not trustworthy.'

'I knew you didn't trust me!

'Scar, please.' The mad, desperation of Scar's expression doubled. Cub stepped away again as his eyes started to glow and let out a small laugh.

'They're taking over again.' He whimpered. 'They're taking over and want you to join us.' Scar started to smile, terror fading as they controlled him, until it was unclear whether it was the real Scar who spoke next. 'Run.'

He didn't need a second warning. Through the shop, through the back, into the redstone... Scar fazed through the wall just after. His escape plan had been found.

There was nowhere to go.

Cub kept running, through the redstone, through the back, unable to think of what to do. Where to go. How to escape. Scar was faster than him, whatever happened Scar was faster than him...

He broke out of the building and took to the air, Scar seconds behind him. Ren looked over from the ground. Tango wasn't there. The group was even bigger than it had appeared from the ground.

'Cuub! Stop trying to run from me!' Scar's voice reached him and he dived for the ground, slipping through the upper floor window. Scar was close behind, swiping for him as he landed, turned, the arrow he fired barely hitting. A hiss of pain back, but Scar kept going after Cub as he continued on, forcing him to keep changing direction, out the building, down towards where the storage system Pearl had made so long ago still stood.

'Get back or I kill you.' Warned Cub, an arrow poised to shoot. Scar didn't move.

'No.' He dared a step forwards. Cub didn't shoot.

'Scar...' He stepped backwards.

'Do it. Shoot me. You said you would.' Another step back.

'Go back to the others, Scar.' And another step, until he was properly backing away. 'Or I'll kill you.'

'Then kill me.' Scar darted forwards suddenly and shoved Cub. He fell, backwards, into the hole that definitely wasn't there earlier.

The wind was kicked from his chest as he landed on his back. Scar stared down at him as though surprised the plan worked, jumping down as Cub slowly got to his feet.

And saw Tango.

There was nowhere to run, nowhere to hide. Scar smiled apologetically.

'Sorry.'

'Nice trick. Get me down here and into a hole. Then kill me. Or get Tango to kill me.' All he could do was talk, backing away until he reached the wall.

'The convex will be reunited.' Scar smiled, though the look in his eyes betrayed his sadness and guilt.

'The convex will be reunited.' Vexes swarmed the air and Cub's stomach twisted as he faced is demise. Then they attacked.

There was no fighting them, and Cub didn't even try, head raised, trying not to cry as he sunk to his knees bleeding.

'See you on the other side, Scar.'

'See you on the other side.'

Cubfan135 was slain by vex
