Chapter Twenty Two

Roman sat straight up in the cot, panting and sweating. "Virgil!" he yelled as he woke, shaking as he felt fear and anxiety rip through his body. He held his head as he tried to breathe, but the dark prince's cries of agony and pain were still ringing through his mind. "V-Virgil..."

"Roman?! Are you alright? What happened?" Luis asked, rushing to his side as he realized he'd woken up. Some of the other man had begun to watch him, eyes widened with concern and slight fear. The prince shook his head in a panic, muttering something about needing to get to Virgil. "Did he visit you again?"

He nodded, whimpering as the scene played over and over again. The fear in his eyes, the pain in his voice... it shook Roman to the core.

"Roman, what's wrong?" the younger prince said more softly, the fear he felt for his brother seeping into his voice.

The Prince of Cliste looked like he might cry. "S-Something's definitely wrong," he said as he shook his head. "He talked about this f-figure that was manipulating him, and then he was s-screaming in pain before d-disappearing as if he'd been pulled away from m-me."

Luis bit down on his lip, trying his best not to be alarmed. However it was written all over his face when the prince looked at him. Roman immediately regretted telling him; he pulled him into a hug as the younger prince started to shake a little. "Luis, I'm sorry I told you, I didn't mean to scare you," he told him, guilt lacing his voice. "I know how much you miss your brother, I'm sorry..."

He whimpered as he melted under his embrace. "I'm so scared for him..." he managed, clinging to Roman tightly. "What e-else did he say?"

"He..." the prince started, not sure how the younger would react to the rest. "This figure thing... he said it was making him do something, but he doesn't know what it is. He's worried about it, and he knows it has something to do with the clouds. He thinks it's dangerous..."

Luis nodded, letting out a shaky breath as he began to calm himself. He had experience calming Virgil down from his panic attacks, so he was able to recover from his own, far less intense ones quickly. "Okay... this is concerning, to say the least," he replied, sighing a little as he pinched the bridge of his nose. "What can we do? We can't move out yet, you were barely out for twenty minutes. The others are still exhausted."

"I want to fall back asleep and try to contact him again," Roman said, scrunching his eyes shut. "But I doubt I could fall asleep with his cries of pain still ringing in my ears, and even if I did, I have no idea if he could actually visit me. I don't know what happened to him."

Thorn walked over to the cot, looking thoughtful. "I can get you to fall asleep again if you want to try and reach out to him," she said, looking him in the eye.

"I'm not letting you knock me out if that's what you're suggesting-"

"No, Roman, I mean, I have a magical ability to calm and health others," the princess clarified with an eye roll as Luis smiled. "I could get you back into a state of sleep, and keep you calm enough to stay asleep if you start to panic."

The prince nodded, thinking through the things he needed to say and ask Virgil if he managed to contact him again. "Okay, that sounds like a plan," he said, laying back down. As Thorn raised her hands above his face, he reached out to stop her by taking her wrist gently. "Wait, I want to say thank you, for all your help."

She looked surprised, but smiled and nodded as he released her wrist. Thorn exhaled, her eyes fluttering shut as her hands glowed with a soft golden light. Roman felt his whole body suddenly relax, as though all the tension was removed. He sighed peacefully as he slipped back into unconsciousness.

Luis watched as Thorn lowered her hands, unable to take his eyes off her. When the princess looked up to see him staring, her eyebrow quirked upward. "Can I help you, or are you too busy undressing me with your eyes?" she said sarcastically as she stood and moved toward their supplies.

The young prince followed her, placing his hand over hers as she reached for something. The action made her glance up, making Luis' breath catch in his throat at the small glimpse of her eyes he'd caught. "You know I'd never do that," he said quietly, feeling his cheeks warm a little. "I was looking at you because you literally take my breath away."

"So I'm a pretty face for you to look at?" Thorn mumbled, pulling away from him slightly.

Luis' jaw fell open in dismay as he shook his head quickly. "No, no! You take my breath away because yes, you're gorgeous, but also because you're so self-assured. Your confidence and grace just... it makes it very hard for me to look away..."

Thorn didn't say anything as the young prince's gaze fell to his shoes. He pulled away his hands with a sigh. "Apologies... I overstepped," he said as he moved back. When the princess still said nothing, he nodded a little and walked away, sitting down to watch Roman sleep. He watched his facial expression carefully, hoping not to see it change into one of fear or worry and remain the calm smile he had.

The prince's eyes fluttered open to see the gardens again, feeling his heart racing. "Virgil?" he called, hoping that if he continued to call for him and wait he'd come back to him. "Virgil! If you can, please come back! I need to know you're okay!"

There was nothing in response, but Roman was deterred; he opted to sit down and remain as calm as he could. "Virgil," he said more calmly. "Virgil, if you can hear me, please show me some sort of sign, or come back."
