Part 2: The Investigation
Katherine sat in a stunned silence, but it did not last long. After she processed what the wisened storyteller had said, she immediately bolted up out of her chair.
"So you're saying... there's a huge monster that's going to attack us and it's really mad because something woke it?" She asked, a note of panic in her voice.
Mr. Madden nodded, then gestured towards the flap of his tent waving in the light breeze and rumblings of the ground. "I hear you're good at solving problems and mysteries and defeating evil tyrants, so I suggest you do something." He said. "Now hurry!"
Katherine rushed out of the tent, sprinting almost full speed towards the huge crack in the ground known as the Great Chasm. It took her only about five minutes to get there, but she was running.
She stopped and panted, staring down the steep sides. She regretted not grabbing anything to climb.
Suddenly, she perked up, and fumbled in her pocket looking for something, eventually pulling out the whistle that she'd used to find the lost alicorns in the first place.
She blew, and instead of a high pitched shriek, the whistle made a beautiful soft note, and only thirty seconds later, it seemed as if a beam of light shined down from the clouds, bearing with it a darker male.
Katherine stepped forward and cautiously reached out her hand, smiling as he stepped forward and nuzzled it.
"Hi Thunder," she said softly. "Where's Dewdrop?"
Thunder tossed his head then used his horn to project the image of a beautiful alicorn on the ground, with a bulging belly.
Katherine gasped in delight. "Thats amazing! I'm so happy for you guys!" She squeals. "But I need your help. Do you think you can help me get town into the chasm," she pointed down the dark abyss, "and investigate the monster down there?"
Thunder tossed his head and whinnied, seeming unsure. After a few seconds he bent down and Katherine clambered onto his back.
With a mighty flap of his wings, Thunder burst off the ground and soared high into the air, gently angled downward into a dive.
Katherine screamed in delight and terror as they streaked into the Great Chasm, and the darkness swallowed them whole.
The absence of the warmth of the sun didn't seem to phase Thunder, as he just lit up the tip of his horn, casting a subtle and warm glow around them, though it didn't penetrate far into the dark.
Katherine glanced up and behind them and was surprised to see how small the line of light was.
A minute later, though it felt like an eternity, Thunder landed on the hard rocky ground. It felt slightly warm.
Katherine looked around the small circle of light still cast by Thunders horn and was surprised to find only sharp rocks.
Except... as she looked further into the shadows, she screamed.
"GAHHH! THERE. ARE. HUMAN SKULLS DOWN HERE!!!" She shrieked, running back to Thunder.
Despite this, they advanced further into the cave, hoping for some clue about the monster.
