*about two years after Runaway Princess*
Katherine stuck her stick she'd been using to draw into the ground bitterly, wishing she had something else to do. Ever since the new baby came, he'd been her mom's favorite child.
Sure, Katherine still got a little attention, and she wasn't completely neglected, but she had been spending most of her time outside and her mom hadn't even noticed.
She stabbed an ant on crawling on the ground, which seemed to shake slightly. She passed it off as her imagination or an unconscious shift of weight.
She got up, but almost immediately had to clutch a small wooden post next to her as the ground shook, with more force this time. It could no longer be her imagination.
Katherine got up, and marched down to the local storytellers tent, resolving to find out what was happening.
"Mr. Madden?" She called, pushing open the flap to find him sitting on a small cushion staring off into space.
"Ah, yes child. Come," he said standing up and locking eyes with her. "I see you have felt the unrest too?"
Katherine shifted uncomfortably but nodded, taking a seat in a small chair Mr. Madden had pulled out.
"You see, these rumblings are not the first of their kind, or the last," he said, eyes still locked on Katherine's.
He then began his story...
"Long ago, before humans and animals we know today walked this planet, there lived great ancient beasts and beings, capable of destroying large amounts of land at a mere flick of a tail or slap of a claw."
Katherine leaned forward in her seat, intrigued.
"However, over time, the mighty species began dying out and losing many of their menacing qualities. They started killing their own kind in desperate grabs for power, until eventually there was but one left."
"Saddened and weak, it decided to bury itself in the ground, and resurface from its slumber rarely."
"Its body created a huge chasm in the ground, what is now known as the Great Chasm."
Katherine gasped.
"You mean-"
"Yes I mean the very chasm we reside by!" Snapped the storyteller, annoyed. "Now hush child, and let me continue.
"Now, every one hundred years, the mighty beast resurfaces from its slumber, and steals a little food and water from our village."
"Only that?" Katherine says, but then catches a glance from the wise man and clamps her mouth shut.
"This year however, something seems to have woken it early, and we are all in grave danger unless it can be stopped."
"If woken early, the monster is filled with an indescribable rage, its mind set only on destroying its surroundings and land, regardless of who's in its way..."
