Chapter 9
"How could you!"
When Jen was completely out of view, it felt like a big bucket of cold water got poured on my head and I could finally avert my eyes away. I was so shocked that it was hard for me to get rid of the deer in head lights look. When I started to process what happened I started to feel the arms around me get tighter. He was trying to keep me in place. I was trapped in the arms of the guy who made those marks appear on Jen's skin. The worst part was I was letting him hold me. I was letting the guy who caused Jen harm, the guy who made her cry.
Why would he do that to her? More importantly, why did he do it?
"What do you mean? She deserved everything that she got!" He started to take deep breaths trying to calm his self down. He even tried to sniff my neck again, but when his nose started to move down I pushed away.
I couldn't stay near him when I knew the more time I stayed talking with him, the farther away Jen would be. Talking to Trent would not get me anywhere; he probably wouldn't answer any of my questions anyways. Also I felt that Jen should be the one to explain. And as much as I wanted to know why she was treated like that or even how she got here, I wanted to comfort her.
I only knew her for a short time, but I already felt like she was my friend. We already had things in common. Both of us got hurt by the monster that wore the crown, and both of us are trapped.
I ran around the corner I saw her go and got stuck in an intersection. I didn't know what way to go so I randomly chose the left one and continued in that direction. I didn't get far before I ran into Tent's chest as I felt the tingles everywhere we touched. My head was up when I was running, but with vampire speed he was in front of me in the blink of an eye.
"Where do you think you are going?" He stood in his same spot not moving with his arms crossed over his chest.
"I'm trying to find my friend." I took a step to the side to get around him, but he just reflected my actions.
"And who may your friend be?" He asked.
Did he seriously not know that I ran in the direction the girl he just hit went? Clearly I was talking about Jen.
"I don't know, Kally," I replied sarcastically.
"Really?" He wore a hopeful expression on his face which got me the tiniest bit confused.
"No! I'm talking about Jen." I rolled my eyes, and this time when I tried to go around him I succeeded. I only got to take two steps before he was back in front of me.
"Who is Jen?"
I looked between both his eyes to see if he was being sarcastic, there wasn't even a tilt upwards of the lips. He looked generally curious about who I was talking about. I didn't know if she didn't tell him, or he never asked, but I would just tell him anyways. It might get a good reaction out of him.
"The girl you just beat." It sounded harsh, but that's what I would call it: A beating. I don't think it be classified as a shove. A shove couldn't make that bad of an outcome, no matter how hard you pushed.
He seemed to think about it, but he finally got it.
"I will not allow you to talk to her! It was a bad idea to let her be your maid. I knew I should have just locked her up with the rest of her family. They should all suffer together, but I need her alive." He mumbled the last part, but I still heard him.
The rest of her family is locked up!
And why does he need her alive. There must be a reason for it. The prince doesn't just hold a whole family hostage for no reason. It's because they didn't want to have useless filth hogging up their dungeons. It was easier just to kill and get it over with. At least that's what I assume after how many times I have seen a vampire kill someone. Vampires never gave the slightest hesitation before sticking their fang in their prey. Usually killing them without a care, and leaving the dead body to rot.
Trent continued talking, more to himself then to me."You know what she has got out of our prisons before. That's why this time we will make a better one. But first we have to find her. There is a guard around every corner. I'm sure someone has seen her. All the doors and windows are locked so there is no way to escape. Once she is found she is going back to the jail cell."
More question swarmed my mind like they usually do. I always seem to have so many questions. But that's only because I don't know everything. In this situation I don't know about anything he is talking about.
The only reason that I could think of to why she was treated badly was because she broke out of her cell. Trent must have a big security system because of how much money he owns. He could probably get the best equipment out there. And yet a girl seemed to get out and leave. Trent must have been furious! But that's only part of the story. I don't know how or why she got locked up?
After Trent was finished talking he turned around so his back was facing me and started to walk away, but before he was fully facing the other direction I saw an unmistakable gleam in his eyes.
I'm sure that he would walk to his office and mind link the guards and send them to find her. But I had to find her first.
I will find her first.
I kept continuing in the direction I was going. Every minute I would glance around to see if I saw the girl with the blonde hair. I went around all downstairs looking and didn't seem to find her anywhere. I didn't know my way around the castle that well. So that was why I got lost quite a lot of times. I probably didn't even look everywhere. I mean this place is huge! For all I knew I could have walked in circles. I got lost and thought I was trapped, but was relieved to see the familiar set of stairs.
I knew where I was now. So maybe I could make a check list of where I have been already. I'm sure one of the rooms I had been in had paper and a writing utensil. This way it would be guaranteed that I have looked everywhere. I started to walk back in the same direction I entered through.
"I need you to stop!" A strong voice rang from behind me making me obey his command and stopped in my tracks.
The footsteps came closer to me, and I still didn't move. I only said one simple word, "Yes?"
When the man came into view I instantly saw the uniform and knew he was a guard.
"I have got orders from the prince that you should be taken to your room while the search is going on." He kept a straight face the whole time. Exactly like a statue, more of a soldier.
"It's okay; you don't have to do that. I want cause trouble." I shook my hand in front of him dismissively.
He didn't even show the slightest bit of emotion as he took slow steps toward me. In one simple lift of his arms he picked me up and threw me over his shoulder.
"Put me down right now!" I yelled as I thrashed at his back with my fist. I think I hurt my hand more than his back. The swaying didn't help either. Every time I looked down I felt sick. So I had to close my eyes and punch. My aim only got worse from there. I would punch in front of me, but sometimes I would only feel air. I couldn't get a good hit in although I was directly behind him.
When I felt the moving had stopped I decided to open my eyes. As I did so I got placed back on the ground.
I sent a glare in the guard's direction, but he seemed unfazed as he dragged me to the closest room and pushed me in.
What caught my attention when we walked in was everything was white. It was white from the ceiling all the way to the floor. This wasn't the bedroom before. This must be some type of guest room from how neat it looked. Nothing was out of place or disorganized.
While I was taking it all in I looked over to the guard that stood next to me. He seemed to be freeze as his eyebrows furrowed together in concentration. He stuck his nose in the air at right after his head snapped in the direction of the closet door. I think it was a closet from how narrow it looked. With another sniff he seemed to relax and get rid of his rigid figure.
I didn't realize that my shoulders were tensed up till I let out a breath and they relaxed. His action worried me more then I knew.
"I am leaving you in here now till the prince comes to retrieve you when the search is over. Your room is being filled with more clothes and is kind of full right now with people making more dresses for your closet." This was only the second time he talked to me this whole time. And I guess that was the last time he would-at least for today-talk to me. Because he walked back to the room door and closed it in my face when he exited.
I followed him, but when I got to the door and tried to twist the doorknob it wouldn't budge. I gave it a kick, but that only seemed to make my foot shake from the force.
With an aggravated scream I punched the door and walked away from it. I knew it wouldn't do anything but I needed to get some anger out. I was angry for not being able to help find Jen because I needed to find her before Trent does. Who knows what bad things he could do to her? The other reason was I was being confined in a space again. I was already trapped in a castle, but a room was different.
A room was smaller. Exactly like Greg's Truck. They both didn't even feel like they had air. In this room I couldn't open the windows for fresh air because they are locked. And the only reason they are locked is they are fearful that I will run away, and I probably would. But that didn't help at all as I started to have that feeling of being trapped. I started to pant so I had to start focus on my breathing to calm down.
"Are you okay?"
I whipped my head to the side once I heard that familiar voice. And there stood the girl I was looking for this whole time. Her crying had stopped, but I could still see the dried up tears.
I didn't reply to her question and instead ran right at her tackling her with a hug. She wasn't expecting it by the way she stumbled backwards. After she steadied herself she wrapped her arms around me too.
"Why are you asking me if I'm okay? I should be asking you that." I only lifted my head up a little bit to look at her.
She gave a small laugh. "That was nothing compared to what I have experienced before."
"What do you mean? You looked really hurt and you were crying?"
"Tears don't really mean anything. And neither does a scratch I was just upset you had to see me like that. I always hated to be looked down upon. And your beloved did that to me. And I couldn't do anything about it because I might be brave, but I am not strong."
So she couldn't fight back? So maybe if I didn't show up it would have been worse? And just hearing Trent being called my beloved gave me a weird feeling. I knew she didn't mean for it to sound like it was my fault for his actions, but by saying "your" it sounded like he was mine. And whatever he does reflects back on me.
I didn't ask for him. I don't want him. I thought of him as a gift you receive but didn't like. In that case you could return it or sometimes get money back. In this case he was the toy that I couldn't get a refund from.
"I didn't ask for him!" I yelled. I didn't mean to say it out loud, but they do say it isn't good to keep your feeling all bottled up.
Jen flinched away. "What do you mean you didn't ask for him?"
"I don't want Trent to be my beloved. I don't want to have a vampire beloved." I explained.
Pity showed all over her eyes as she responded truthfully, "I don't know what I would do if I had a beloved. But I am sorry that you got stuck with one."
We just went into staring at each other and then it occurred to me I still didn't know how she got in here. There was no way she got into the room after the door was locked. So it had to be before. She must have been hiding somewhere in the room, and sure enough the closet door behind her was wide open.
"You were in the closet hiding when the guard and I came in? How did he not know you were in here?"
Vampires can smell you and know where you are just by the aroma you have. That's how it is easier to find people. It is not that strong, but stronger than humans. That's probably what the guard smelled. He smelled her, but somehow it wasn't strong enough for her to get found.
"Hiding in clothes can hide your scent. If you have not realized it yet a lot of the coats in the closet smell like lavender. If it's strong enough then sometimes it can block vampires' smells, like it did for me." She gave me an all teeth smile like she accomplished something big, and then it dropped. "And what do you mean a guard walked in with you? How did you get put in here anyways?"
I can't believe I didn't tell her yet. Ugh, I'm so stupid.
"Trent and a bunch of his guards are looking for you to take you back to the prison cells. They locked me in here so I wouldn't look for you or get in the way, but I don't think they will find you now that we are stuck in a room together," I said.
How did the guards not look in here for Jen before putting me in? They were probably still checking the lower floors like I was, and going to do the top floors later. But how did she get in this room without anyone finding her, or at least one of the guards knowing what direction she went in. Didn't Trent say there are guards everywhere?
"How did you get in here unnoticed?"
She looked shaken from my previous remark about them locking her up in prison, but she still answered my question. "I know there are guards around the whole castle, but they don't always do a great job. They only really do their job when the prince tells them an order. Otherwise they are oblivious to what is going on. And this room is sound proof so they can't hear us now. That's why I hid in here; I don't know why they would lock you in here?"
"How do you know that this room is sound proof?"
"I've been here too many times," she said.
She knew so much more than I did, and I knew it had to do with reasons why she got thrown into this castle in the first place. And that only made me want to ask my question more than I did before, so I did.
"How did you end up here?"
She sighed, "I thought you would ask me something like that."
Jen walked over to the bed in the middle of the room and plopped herself down. Then indicated for me to sit down next to her, and I did.
She scooted herself closer to the bed post till her back was firmly pressed against it, and then propped her feet up with pillows. She seemed to be getting herself comfy.
"If I'm going to tell you how I got here I should start from the beginning." She took a shaky breath, and that little bit of air taken in indicated this was going to be something hard for her to talk about. It was her past, and talking about your past always brought back memories. Some good, but others you might want to forget or not remember. A look of pain crossed her face and I started to feel guilty for asking. I should have kept my mouth shut. We did just meet, and this was a personal question.
"I'm sorry, I shouldn't have asked. You d-"
"No, it's fine." She ensured me then took another breath in, this time it was less shaky. "It started with a boy named Lucas."
I really hope you liked this chapter because worse then a late update it a crappy chapter. On the last chapter I'm going to be completely honest. I had no idea what secret Jen was hiding. I was just writing and all of a sudden I wrote it down. So from there I had no idea what I was going to do. It seemed like the story wasn't going in the right direction. It was going to go everywhere and way off the main idea. Then two days ago this idea hit me and it tied it all together. I have been writing this chapter for you since then. Your votes really helped me get this chapter out there.
Is it the same Lucas from chapter one?
Anyone have any ideas of what's going to happen?
