Chapter 15
Song= Battle Scars: Lupe Fiasco & Guy Sebastian
"Please, all I'm asking is for you to repeat yourself."
The inside of the tree apparently leaded to the place where he wanted to take me. I was-and am-too stunned by his words to do anything but follow as he drags me by my wrist though the dark. He can see where we are going, while my vampire vision is just kicking in. Everything looks foggy.
"I said that this tunnel is for the saving humans cause."
"How do you know about that? It's about humans wanting to kill vampires?" I questioned, wondering how he knew about it.
"I'm fully aware of that."
"Then why-" He already knew my next question before I could complete my sentence. His hand dropped from my wrist, and stopped completely.
"Have you ever thought that maybe vampires have feelings too? Well, you still seem to have feelings and you are now a vampire. We might not have hearts, but we still care. That's how we can still love our beloveds and how we still feel regret."
The word Beloved struck me again. Trent's face popped in my head, again. It felt like the millionth time that it happened. Separation wasn't doing me any good, it made me wonder how he was feeling. He had marked me, but I never did it back. Would he still feel this pain, or this need of want? And as much as my body begged me to run from this stranger named Kyle, I didn't want to go back.
Seeing the look of sadness cross Kyle's face made me wonder what he could be thinking about. "So how did you learn about it?"
"Who hasn't heard about it?" He gave a humorless chuckle. "I think I learned about it, the moment I needed something good to happen." I didn't need to ask for him to continue. "I met my beloved, and she was human, I was staring too long that it gave another vampire the opportunity to kill her. No hesitation. They went straight for the kill. The one thing-the only thing-I looked forward to in this never dying concept was living with the person that was made for me. Of course, I killed that vampire afterwards, but it didn't stop the regret I felt in not taking her the second I saw her." I could see the blood slipping down his cheeks. I didn't question why he was telling me this. I didn't know how to comfort a vampire; I didn't know how to comfort people. Trent and Jen would tell me their stories, but would never get sappy on me; they always seemed too strong to show too much emotion.
I carefully wrapped my arms around his torso and patted his back. I felt awkward.
"So what's the point of living if you have nothing to look forward to? The only thing that I'm looking forward to is killing vampires. Humans don't deserve this. We didn't deserve this." He gestured between the both of us. "And if I can help other people kill vampires, the monsters that took everything away from me, then I will."
Trying to see his face in this fog covering my eyes, I asked, "How did you become a vampire?"
"That is a story that I will save for another time. We got to keep moving."
We could have talked as we found our way underground, but I had a feeling that was just a topic he didn't want to talk about. We continued walking.
He wasn't grabbing on my wrist, or dragging me by my arm. I was just walking beside him with my arms lazily dragging at my sides.
"So why did you kidnap me?" If I was going to get answers to some questions I should at least try when it was just him and I.
"All your questions will be answered soon," he promised.
"How did you get so tall?"
Laughing he replied, "Genetics."
I liked him better when he was laughing, he seemed less uptight. Why couldn't Trent do that more? I shook my head of the thought. I needed to get him out of my head.
Looking at the ground to concentrate on something else, I found dirt and a pebble. Picking up the small object in my hand I threw it, then ran to go find it, then something small hit me on the head. Looking at the ground I saw the pebble. That was strange. This time I picked it up and threw it, but when I ran to go find it I turned around to see a small rock aiming right at my stomach. Grabbing it before it could fall on the ground I stared in amazement at it in my hand. This was my pebble.
"I see someone just got their vampire speed." I focused my eyes on Kyle as he was rounding the corner of the tunnel. Everything looked a lot brighter now.
"It's so cool," I replied, looking back down at my hand.
"You get over the excitement after some time. A full vampire doesn't have all the perks that you would hope for."
He was back to being glummy. I didn't like it. Not forgetting his words about me being a full vampire, I decided to put it to the test.
"Let's have a race."
"Do you even know where we are going?" His arms were crossed over his chest defiantly.
Nope. "Yes."
"Okay, then let's do this." He grabbed the pebble out of my hand and drew a line on the ground. "This is the starting line." I nodded. He threw the pebble behind us. I wasn't going to be getting it back.
"Ready. Set. Go!" I yelled, as I took off going around curves of the dirt covered walls. There was only one path so it was easy to follow, until it split, and there was two. I didn't give my time to think as I kept going the path in front of me. Starting to hear more noise than my feet just hitting the ground, I followed it. The tunnel finally stopped as it led upwards for me to crawl up. Once reaching the top it looked like the bark of another tree. I hit it with my hand and the bark rose up, showing a clear view of grass, and that the sun was just starting to go down.
I watched as a bird took off from a tree, and all I could think about was how slow it was going. Then there was someone with pink running shorts, and a white T-shirt. They looked to be going at a good pace, until they seemed to be going slower, as if in slow motion. My ears couldn't hear chirping anymore, only the pumping of blood. Red started to become the color of all my surroundings. A sweet smell entered my nose, like fresh baked cookies that my mom would leave on the kitchen table when I came home from school.
I followed the smell, till I felt something run into me. Looking down I saw a person, her eyes huge with fright as she looked at me. Why was she scared? My gums started to hurt looking at her. The pulse by her neck looked like it was about to pop. Was that hurting her? I bent down in a haze and touched the spot right on her neck. Suddenly everything became blurry. There was no longer a person in front of me, but a red blob, and closing my eyes I felt as my teeth clamped down on something as a sweet taste entered my mouth, the smells smelt great too. I could hear the faint noise of a scream, but it sounded underwater. I would go see where it was coming from, but it sounded so far away that I couldn't force myself away from this wonderful taste. Then the taste was gone, there was no more that was coming, like a glass was empty.
Confused I started to raise my head, my vision starting to clear.
A force hit me and strapped me to a tree with both their hands. "What were you doing!?" The persons face came into my vision.
"Kyle! You are slow. I got here way before you." I told him with a big smile, wiping my mouth with the back of my hand.
He looked down at my hand, saddened. "Do you know what you have done, Chloe?"
My reaction must have told him I didn't understand. He moved out of the way letting me see the girl that I saw running earlier. Her eyes were opened with terror as she lay there on the ground. Her body looking like she didn't have any color to her complexion. I walked around Kyle to inspect the girl better. "Who would do this? I just saw her running a little bit ago!"
If possible his facial expression dropped again. "This shows you how fast a vampire can kill someone. Bloodlust controls us; even the best hearted people have trouble controlling it."
I staggered back from the girl seeing the huge fang mark on her neck, then down to the blood on my hand. "I did this."
"You are just a new turned. Your brain goes into denial the first time you kill someone. You will get better. I will teach you how to control it." I wanted so badly to believe him, but I just kept staring at the dead body. Could I ever learn how to control this?
Trying to get my mind off of it I asked, "Is that how your beloved died... bloodlust?"
I didn't think he would tell me, but he shook his head. "If it was, then I could have ripped him off of her. Instead he just snapped her neck." Blood was already pouring down my eyes. "And do you know why?" I shook my head. "For the fun of it. Blood wasn't enough for him, he just loved death. I call those people kill happy, like from the saying trigger happy."
"That's horrible." I wasn't much better though. "I never want to become that way."
"You won't."
"I won't if you just kill me right now."
He shook his head. "I'm not going to do that. We need you."
"Why do you need me! Clearly all I can do is kill people. I'm as bad as the person that killed my parents!" I couldn't control the blood that flowed from my eyes.
"Never say that! You are important."
"And who is this 'we' that you keep talking about?" I shouted. I already knew no one was around, so I wasn't worried that anyone would hear me.
"You already would have found out if you went on the right path." He was calm, I should be too, but I wasn't.
"I went the wrong way! So this is all my fault!" He took a step closer, but I held my hands up. "Don't step closer."
"I won't" He walked past me to the dead girl and put her over his shoulder.
"What are you doing?" I asked watching as he carried her to the tree I exited, and he was entering.
"I'm getting rid of the evidence." When the bark closed behind him, I just stared at his retreating form. He didn't tell me to follow him. I could just leave, I could escape from him. Escape didn't feel like the right word to use. He didn't kidnap me, he was taking me away from a place I never wanted to go to again. My heart disagreed...but there was still that argument if I really did have one. If I could kill someone and in some ways don't care. How could I still love?
He was also the only person that said they would help me. The only person that ever said they needed me, except for Greg. That was different, Greg didn't care about me as a person, kyle seems to care. So not letting him get too far ahead in the tunnel I went back into the tree to see him pat the the dirt on the ground with a shovel. "It's taken cared of."
"Where did you get the shovel?"
"You aren't the first one." I understood exactly what he meant. I wasn't the first to kill. He placed the shovel against the far wall. "That exit you went through is just another entrance to go to the place I want to go to. There are four all together."
We walked back through the tunnel, until we turned right. This was the turn I had missed before, and just like before the tunnel stopped and went upwards. There was bark all around us from the tree. Except instead of the inside being plain there was leaves that were put in certain directions to spell the word "Welcome."
"Can you tell me where we are now?"
A huge smile took over his face. "This is 'The saving human's cause'. This is where it begins." He hit his hand on the bark before I could talk; moving it upwards to reveal a swarm of people. Looking around one head stuck out to me the most. They weren't facing me, but talking to someone in front of them. Their hair the color of platinum blonde.
