Chapter 6 | ghoul spirit

"It sounds like this is someone in the culprits inner circle who wants to speak up but is too scared to. Hence the alias..." L muttered, reading the message over again.

He jumped when he heard you frantically knocking on his door, he was about to get some sleep for once in his life as well. He was in his coffin bed and everything. But this was more important than sleep at the moment.

"I mean it could be a prank but the exact day and time they gave makes me think otherwise" you replied.

"Me too... I think it's real. And V..? I don't know any V names here. Unless it's just a random letter. Oorrr... maybe it's a reference?" L pondered.

"A reference? To what?"

"V for vendetta. It's a story about vigilante justice. A masked guy plots to blow up parliament on Guy Fawkes day"

Oh that's right! You hadn't really seen it properly, just in passing on TV. But it was pretty famous and lots of people knew it even if they hadn't seen it.

"Oh yeah! remember, remember the 5th of November?" You asked.

"That's the one. Also that's the day I died but that's another story"

Although you were curious you knew death was a touchy subject for some of the undead people, so you didn't ask. Plus, the mysterious message was more important right now.

"Should we go to the sport fair? You asked.

"We should, I was going to go anyway because Matt and Mello are playing in it. Nears handling the club for the day" L replied.

"Oh yeah it's in the day... will you be good out in the sun?"

"I've got a wide parasol and SPF 5000 sunscreen. As long as I stay in the shade I'll be fine. I suppose we just... show up and keep an eye out"

L looked like he was conflicted. There was something else on his mind clearly.

"You seem to know something else" you said.

"I might be reading too deep into it, but it's strange that it's the 5th of November. It could just be a coincidence because the sport fair is a good time to strike. It could be a reference to the Guy Fawkes plot, hence why the messenger chose to reference V... also it rubs the the wrong way that something clearly bad is going to happen on my death date" L rambled.

It may just be a coincidence, but if it wasn't it could be a major hint. All you could do was wait for the sport day to roll around and see what happens. All week you were anxiously waiting, unsure what to expect. When the day finally came you and L set up a place to sit under the shade of the trees on the field, close enough to the casket-ball courts to watch Matt and Mello play but positioned so you could still see the whole field.

All you could do was watch, sit and watch. Sipping your slushies, snacking on the scream-cheese bagels the school had provided for lunch. L had the clubs camera for both pictures of the sport events for the paper and any potential evidence, his sunglasses were shaped like bat wings, he looked pretty cool with them in hall honestly.

Not liking the scratchy grass you were floating just above it, looking around the field for anything suspicious.

The whistle on the casket ball court blew, stopping the game for lunch. Monster high was winning so far, the other schools put up a good fight but they weren't good enough. The team and fear leaders all split off to either get their own lunch or head to the food tent to get what the school was providing.

Matt and Mello ran over to the two of you, skidding to a stop and tumbling into the grass beside you.

"We are wiping the FLOOR with them" Mello said.

"As always" L replied.

Monster high always won casket ball. It was a well known fact around the area.

"Any leads?" Matt asked, practically downing his whole water bottle in one go.

"Nope, everything seems so normal" you sighed.

"Man this whole thing is so weird, like what does 'unclean' even mean?" Mello said.

L shrugged, not having figured that one out yet. Mello reached into his bag, pulling out a pack of marshmallows and some forks.

"Dude, you're gonna get marshmallow goop all over me again" Matt said.

"Nah man I'm an expert at roasting them now. Give me your hand" Mello replied.

You snickered, watching Mello use Matt's flames to roast marshmallows. Because that was a very nutritious snack for a sport day.

"Better give me one, you know how I am with sugar" L said.

Mello rolled his eyes, letting L bite one off the fork.

"Aren't you vamps meant to be all over blood?" He teased.

"Not sweet enough, tastes horrible" L replied.

L was the only vampire you knew that didn't like blood. Well... false blood. No vampires actually drank real blood nowadays, it's a bit inhumane to the animals and people the blood comes from. Plus, false blood meant no potential diseases, full control over all the vitamins and nutrients in it and even different flavours. You've never tried the stuff, wasn't your idea of yummy. And surprisingly L didn't like it either. He had to take supplement pills though, he was a vampire he needed the nutrition blood had. It's kind of like an iron deficient person taking iron pills.

Mello held out a marshmallow for you as well, which you took gladly and ate in one bite.

"In all honesty I think we'll miss it..." L sighed.

"V did say the culprit was sneaky so it was no guarantee we'd catch them" you replied.

"True, but I wish we could. It'd stop further bad things from happening... no idea what those bad things even are yet, but they're bad so they shouldn't happen"

Off in the distance you could hear some of the fear leaders practicing for the next game, the classic chants that always go stuck in your head carrying in the wind.

'We've got spirits yes we do! We've got spirits how bout you?' And 'm-o-n-s-t-e-r, monsters monsters yes we are!' Would forever be stuck on loop in your head after today.

You looked over at the swarms of students all sitting around the field on lunch break. Soaked in sweat or water from their water bottles they'd tipped over themselves, laughing with friends and eating their lunch. The bleachers had been reserved for guests like parents coming to watch the game, and they'd gone empty as people went to go check in with their kids. Now would've a great time to strike, since everyone was off guard and all over the place. It'd be easy to sneak around. But you just couldn't see anything suspicious at all...

Either the culprit was really really sneaky, or they changed the date of their strike last minute.

Your daze staring out at the field was cut off when you suddenly heard the boys beside you all drop what they were doing and jump up. Turing to gave them, you saw them all clinging to an older man in a tight hug.

"Legend! You always make it!" Mello said.

"Thanks for showing up Mr Wammy" Matt replied.

Every time Matt was close to fabric you couldn't help but be a little nervous his hair would set it on fire. But he seemed to ca careful and stay just far away enough not to burn it. Mello's tail wagged like a puppy happy to see his owner, a cute change from his usual rowdy domineer.

"Hey dad, I've missed you" L smiled.

This older guy, L's father it seemed looked so... human. What was he? You hadn't seen a monster like this before, was he actually just a normie? L mentioned that he and the others all went to the same foster home, this must be the owner of it.

"I missed you too kiddo, sorry I'm a little late. We had a new arrival this morning" Mr wammy said.

"No way! Really? We barely get new kids" Matt said.

"She's a bright young girl, a yokai. From Osaka, Maki is her name. She's been caught up in a rather tragic event loosing her parents. But she's doing well"

It was kind of sweet knowing their foster parent figure made the time to come see Matt and Mello play, even though he had so much to do owning the orphanage. You didn't know much about it yet, L had only mentioned bits and pieces here and there. The older kids around his age could stay in the dorms at monster high, the younger ones still in primary school stayed at the orphanage and did school there.

"Oh yeah, we finally have a new club member" L spoke up, gesturing to you.

Mr Wammy looked over, a little surprised to see someone else in the group.

"Oh wow, I was beginning to think you guys had some top secret agency going on with how small the club was. Nice to meet you" he said.

"You too, I'm (y/n) just started a few weeks ago" you replied.

"They've been such a big help already, they run the blog now. It's made things a lot easier having someone to focus on the blog" L said, giving you a warm smile his fangs poked through.

Man... he has such a cute smile.

At least you got to watch the boys play and win the game, and meet their foster parent figure today. Even if you couldn't spot a single lick of evidence, today was still a good day.
