Chapter 19 | V's identity

Today had been a wild one. Still no sign of the werewolf girl, classes were back but the security had amped up even more. No one was allowed outside the building, all the doors had been locked and the alarm system turned on. Roll call was done at the start and end of each class, during lunch and recess several staff members stood guard at the doors to the hallways watching. Bags were checked, lockers were checked, and yet there was still no sign of a weapon, plan, clues, anything.

When you and L woke up that morning you talked about what to do with V's proposal before heading to class. It could be a trap, it could be dangerous. But if it wasn't, it would be invaluable information. So you decided to take the risk, and all precautions necessary. You messaged V back, agreeing to keep their identity secret if they met you in person. And by lunch they'd replied with a time and a place.

11pm, the clock tower at the very top of the school.

You told Mello, Matt and Near that if you didn't message them saying you were safe by midnight then go get help, because something would have gone terribly wrong. And you carried a weapon on you too just in case you had to resort to self defence. As 11pm approached, you phased through the roof and into L's room again like you did last night. You went over the plan one last time and headed out. You had to be sneaky, it was past lights out and there's be staff and nocturnal students all over the hallways. So you opted to go from the outside in.

Climbing out the dorm window, you picked L up tightly and floated your way up the side of the building, making sure to avoid windows and security cameras. L clung to you tightly, a little nervous to be up so high with no safety net or harness to catch him. But you made it safely and you put L down on the small balcony that sat right under the clock face.

The door leading into the maintenance room was locked of course, so you phased through it to unlock it from the inside. Luckily this part of the school was so old and barely ever used it didn't have an alarm hooked up to it, so you were able to unlatch the lock from the inside and open the door to let L in.

The room was dim but lit by the big stained glass windows that let the light in. Around you were several gears that made the clock tick, the giant bell that sounded when the time changed, and several old things the school had put up here for storage.

"Woah... what even is all this stuff?" You pondered, looking around at the dust covered clutter.

"A fire hazard" L replied, noticing all the old papers, books and other flammable items stacked up.

"Well, good thing neither of us are made of fire then"

There were some old banners and flags with the schools old logo folded up, probably used in sport carnivals back in the day. Some old broken desks and chairs, a dented locker, several boxes of old school uniform parts. L noticed some old framed pictures and plaques against the walls all stacked together, curious he began to flip through them.

Head student, prefect and student council plaques from 1890-1920. An old map of the school before it was renovated and more buildings were added, and old sign that once hung over the gym. He pulled back the framed picture, finding a graduating class photo from 1903. It was in grainy black and white, the fashion of the time was completely different and all the names of the students lined a list down the side.

"Wow this is old as- is that Dracula?" L muttered.

You walked over to see for yourself and saw a much younger version of the famous vampire, still rocking the popped collar though.

"Wow that is old as hell, you know his daughter is in our year group?" You said.

"No way, really? Mustn't have any classes with her, never met her" he replied.

"I only know because Frankie mentioned it"

"Oh yeah! I didn't know that was his daughter I just assumed some kid was named after him. Since you know, he's famous and all"

Your conversation was cut when you heard movement in the darkness, immediately your hand went to the pocket knife in your waistband, looking around for the source.

It was the door, the one you'd just come through and closed behind you. Watching the handle turn, you grabbed L's hand in anticipation and the two of you were ready for a fight if needed. When it opened, you saw the shadowed outline of a short person with wings, and when they stepped forward into the light, you immediately recognised them.

"Misa?" You questioned.

The shinigami stood before you, the pink and black pyjama pants you'd seen the person wear the other night you snuck out hung off her waist. You weren't surprised that Misa was involved, more surprised she was coming forward, that she was V.

"Hey... guys..." she said, seeming nervous.

"You... you're V?" L asked.

"Yeah. I promise I'm not here to kill you and I have no listening devices on me or anything. I'm doing this behind everyone's backs"

You loaned up a bit, but kept your hand locked with L's just in case. He didn't protest, giving your hand a gentle squeeze of assurance.

"I mean... I had a feeling you were involved but you're actually admitting it?" L asked.

"I promise you I'm not as guilty as I seem. Yes, I did know about the murder plot, and I know I should tell the police but if I do... he's going to expose... everything..." Misa replied.

When the suspicion fell on Light and his crew, L had a hunch there'd be some kind of manipulation going on. He'd always found the relationship with he had Misa and Takada strange.

"Is it Light?" You asked.

"Yes... he's the mastermind. He did the graffiti, he killed Jackal and the girl that just went missing? It was him too. Although I don't know where she is or if she's alive, he acted alone this time. He said it'd be too risky if we were all caught sneaking around so he pulled this one off himself. And... I'm the one who slipped the note under your door" Misa explained.

"I fucking knew it, I never liked that bastard..." L sighed.

"Wait, the note about the fight? Do you have any idea what that was about?" You asked.

"No, he just said that Mikami told him something and that made him want to fight you"

So Misa didn't even know about these supposed text messages? Even though she was allegedly the one being texted? That was just further proof they were absolutely fake.

"Well according to Mikami and his fake screenshots, I've been texting you and apparently Light doesn't like me talking to his girlfriend. Never mind the fact I don't even have your number, and I have my own partner. I think he just wanted an excuse to beat me up" L explained.

"What? I've literally never spoken to you until now" Misa replied, just as confused.

The moon provided enough light you could see she was unarmed, and as the conversation went on you felt she wasn't a threat. Your grip on the pocket knife loosened and you let go, clearly Misa had a guilty conscience and wanted to atone for her sins somehow.

"Ok... explain everything. Why is he doing this? Who is involved?" You asked.

"Light, Mikami, Takada and me. Although I'm trying to stay as out of it as I can without... ok let me start from the beginning. When we met I fell crazy hard for him, and I tried to get closer you know? Flirting and hanging out and stuff. I told him a lot of personal things, because I genuinely thought we were getting closer in a normal way. As soon as he found out about my eye, it was like he was suddenly in love with me. Looking back I know he probably only did that because he saw me as useful" Misa began.

"Your eye?" L cut in.

Misa always wore a bandage over one eye, no one knew why. Some assumed she'd lost it, or had a scar she was ashamed of or something. But her kindness and peppy attitude made everyone overlook it and rather than bully her for it, it became more of a mystery about the cute goth girl.

"It... can do things. You know how shinigami can see the names and lifespans of people?" She said.

"Yeah?" You replied.

"Well the eye I cover can cut peoples life spans in half of I look at them with that eye... I think he's keeping me around so he can use my eye in one of his plots as a backup plan or something"

You'd never heard of that power before, you knew the shinigami eyes were powerful but fuck... that was a whole other level of alarming. No wonder she kept it covered, one wrong look and she could accidentally kill someone she cared for.

"Wow... never knew that was a thing" L said.

"It's super rare, but it can happen. Anyway, a little while after we started dating he started talking about how only pure monsters should be allowed to live, and that any half human monster was this disgusting hybrid freak of nature. It caught me off guard a bit, but... I mean the whole school knows what happened to my parents. So I guess I was a bit lost in the grief of it all and blindly agreed" Misa continued.

That was a story the whole school knew about, because of how much of a shock and tragedy it was. In her first year at the school she got a call from her grandmother in the middle of class, and had to hear the tragic news a robber had killed her parents. Understandably she was devastated, and the news spread fast. Since she's pretty popular, when she came back to school after the funeral and taking some time to mourn, everyone did their best to comfort her.

It was a horrible thing to go though, and affected her judgment in her destroyed mental state.

When the guy was caught, it was found to be a Hyde, and he managed to weasel his way out of conviction which only hurt Misa and her family even more. You understood how in her state, she'd jump to the conclusion that Hyde's are dangerous and want them, like the robber, dead. Even though it was wrong to think so.

"When Light started saying to me and the group we should all 'cleanse the school' we all thought it was a good idea. I mean, I just wanted some form of justice for my parents you know? But when it came time to actually do it... reality hit me and I realised this was insane. Jackal had nothing to do with my parents, and no one else who's half human did either! But I couldn't back out because... well... Light has blackmail on me" Misa explained.

Clearly she'd gotten herself into a toxic relationship, Light saw a very vulnerable and struggling girl who had a crush and took major advantage of that.

"If you can't tell police then it must be really bad..." you said.

"It's... it-" she stammered.

Struggling to form the words and feeling devastated and embarrassed about the whole situation, she felt her eyes well up with tears.

"It's a tape. Like... that kind. I was lovesick and stupid last year and didn't think he'd do something like this" she admitted.

Oh... fuck. Yeah no wonder she didn't want that out there. Not only would no one ever let her live it down, it was recorded when she was 16... some disgusting people would do disgusting things if they saw it.

"Shit... ok yeah I get why you can't risk him finding out you're going against him. And if you told police he'd absolutely know, the second he finds out they have inside knowledge you'd be fucked..." you sighed.

"I want to tell them, I really do. I feel like a fucking idiot for falling into his trap, but if that video gets out there..." Misa sniffled.

If L didn't already hate Light, this would make him loathe him. So he's a general asshole, a killer, discriminatory AND is holding revenge porn over Misa's head? Disgusting. How that man came from the DNA of former police officer turned teacher Mr Yagami L had no idea.

"I get it, you really can't have that video out there" L said.

"And as for Mikami's text story... I don't know. This is the first I'm hearing of it. Maybe he wants me out of the picture? I mean he is weirdly obsessed with Light..." Misa pondered.

This was one hell of a web of secrets and lies.

"Listen... if you help us gather your enough evidence to hand to police that will secure a conviction, then we won't tell anyone you are involved. That way the video won't get leaked. If you can slowly leak information to us in a way that's believable to be a coincidence, we could get this solved without that video getting out" L offered.

That's what Misa was hoping, that she could be the inside spy, the whistleblower. That way she'd not have her whole body broadcast to the world and be able to stop Light. Because who knows what Light would do to her on top of that video if he found out she was turning on him.

"Deal, thank you for listening. Thank you for understanding and not just jumping to turn me in" Misa sighed in relief.

It was a shitty situation, and a tough one to navigate. She was caught in a really tight spot, luckily you'd be there to help her. She could be your eyes, you and L would be the mouthpiece.
