Chapter 13 | identification

After painstakingly going through every photo the club has taken of school events and the students, you'd collected every picture containing the possible shoes of the culprits. And you'd called your very perceptive classmate back into the club room to go through each one and see if they could identify a match.

It was quiet in the club room as Frankie went through all the pictures, L was stitching a tear in Nears arm back up as he'd gotten the thread caught on the door earlier that day. The problems of being a living doll... You wondered how much pain he could feel, because that needle didn't even make him flinch.

"Oh! Those are the red ones!" Frankie spoke up.

You leaned over to look at the picture, and where Frankie was pointing. And much to your surprise, it was exactly why you'd thought.

"I knew Light was suspicious as hell!" You said.

L immediately pinned the stitch in Near and the two scrambled over to look. It was a photo of the casket-ball team last year, and Light stood just off the the centre in the uniform and exact red shoes Frankie had seen that day.

"I knew it, maybe I'm not as biased as I thought" L said.

"Your unease with him is justified then, then again he had always fit the profile. He takes joy in trying to burn you in the sun after all" Near replied.

"He wha-" Frankie spoke up.

Frankie was relatively new to school and life itself, only about 35 days old at this point. Although physically they were the same age as you and L. But they hadn't been in the school long so they wouldn't have seen any of Lights bull shit happen before.

"Yeah he hates me. All because I took his spot at top of the class, he's petty and prone to outbursts when no one is looking. He could absolutely kill someone if he's willing to burn me" L sighed.

"Geez... how'd he get a girlfriend if he's like that? I'm definitely not letting Drac near him if he burns vampires for fun" Frankie said, continuing to flip through the photos in search of the black shoes.

L pinned the first photo to the pinboard on the wall, that was starting to look like one of those stereotypical detective boards with the red string on them. He was hesitant to deem Light a suspect at first because he knew that their rivalry was a conflict of interest, but now he has a solid lead and could be confident in the accusation.

The fact you saw two girls last night also make him think that his arm candy girls might be involved two. Or at least know if it. Misa and Takada didn't seem to get along that well because they both wanted Light for some reason, but he's manipulative and could easily get them to set aside their differences to help further his agenda.

L didn't want to insinuate that all shinigami are murderers, because they're not. They only take the lives of those who are at the end of their natural life, like checking people off a list who were at the end of their rope. But Light was different, he seemed so enamoured with death. Not to mention he had access to a death note which could definitely be used to kill. Although the fact the body didn't die of a heart attack as far as anyone knew told L that he mustn't have used the death note. It'd probably just incriminate him more if he did use it, it's obvious when a death happens because of a death note.

"There, those are the black ones... huh. Looks like these two have the same pair" Frankie said, pointing out the shoes in another picture.

As L began to expect now, it was both Misa and Takada wearing those shoes. The picture was of the fear leaders mid routine, and both girls wore the black shoes. Actually... all the fear leaders did.

"Huh? Oh... they all have them. Maybe it's just a kind of shoe fear leaders wear? That means the other person must be a fear leader right?" Frankie muttered.

"Yep, probably Misa and Takada. They're closely connected to Light" you replied.

"They're probably the two girls we almost ran into last night as well..." L said.

Things were falling into place, it was just who you'd expected it to be. If you had to guess, Light was the ringleader of all this and stringing the girls along for his benefit.

"That answers a few things, but we still have no idea which one of them is V. Or if there's someone else involved" Near pointed out.

"I don't know enough about the girls to make a judgement. We'll have to look into them. Thanks for the help Frankie" L said.

"No problem! Call me back if you need to identify any more shoes!" They smiled.

They went to go finish lunch with their friends, leaving the club with at least a few answers. Light, Misa and Takada, all potential suspects. And quite unsurprising ones at that, although the rest of the school seemed so obvious to their behaviours. You didn't blame them for not seeing Misa as a threat, she was actually rather nice and it was mainly Light that pulled her strings. Takada was pretty unassuming from what you knew, and Light? Well he was just insane. You had no idea how no one saw it.

"So, we have suspects. What now?" You asked.

"We watch" L replied.

"Just in general or..?" Near asked.

"Yep. Keep an eye on them in class, if they wander off somewhere, follow them. Listen to them in the dorms, keep them in the line of sight really"

The bell rung for the next class, and you decided to continue the meeting after school. You had math, ew. But you did have that class with Light so you could keep an eye on him. You didn't sit nearby, he was across the room. But the further you were from him the better, you could easily watch from a distance and be safe from him potentially hurting you.

You'd be keeping an eye on him from now on, a close one.

You sat in your usual spot, watching him walk in and be kissed goodbye by Misa. He seemed uninterested in her, you had no idea how she didn't see that. But they do say that love is blind.

He sat by the front, which you always found kinda a dick move when monsters with wings did that. It blocked the view of the whiteboard for those in the back rows, and Lights wings took up half his damn desk span.

Although seeing his wings did make you think, he could fly... so that would absolutely give him an advantage over land bound monsters. He could use that to see wide areas from above and check if he was alone too...

There you looked at him, the more he seemed like a solid suspect. He fit the profile of the killer, he was just good at hiding his true intentions.
