Chapter 12 | sneaking

A knock on your dorm door almost made you jump out of your skin, you were just about ready for bed, already in your pyjamas and we're just about to turn off all your devices to go to sleep. But the knock stopped you mid night routine, thinking maybe it was a staff member doing checks to make sure everyone was accounted for, you opened the door.

It was L, he slipped in and closed the door behind him. He wasn't meant to be wandering the halls past lights out but here he was.

"What are you doing up so late?" You asked.

"I can't stop thinking about the tip Frankie gave us. I wanna check out the area down the side of the school but there's no way I can get in there with out making noise. You can float so can you get us over the fence?" L said.

You blinked, taking everything in for a moment. He wanted to go out past lights out WHILE there was a killer on the loose? He was crazy.

"L you're insane" you said.

"I'm not my foster dad had me tested, I just don't have impulse control" L replied.

You shook your head. That son of a bitch, you were in. You wanted to know the answers as much as he did.

"Fine, we can't get caught though or we'll be stuck in detention for the rest of the year. And we have to be careful" you agreed.

"Don't worry, I know a way there" he replied.

I'm order to not be caught sneaking through the halls by the staff or nocturnal students, you phased through the wall and L climbed out the window to the area outside the dorms. It seemed like he was trying to sleep when the impulse to know answers took over him, because he looked tireder than usual and wore a matching pyjama set. Silky and in dark blue with panda slippers. Not the spooky thing you'd expect from a vampire, but cute nonetheless.

He was just cute in general though.

"I hope you know where we're going" you said.

"I do, I've used this route to avoid Light in the halls before" he replied.

You both ducked under the open windows as you walked down the side of the school, approaching the fences off trash area. It was dark, but L being a vampire could see well in the darkness. You had a decent amount of light from the moon that gave you the general idea of the area.

"Ok so that's the emergency exit, right in view of the fence" L muttered.

There was a sizeable gap under the door, plenty for Frankie to have seen the shoes of the suspects from. And it was in line with the fence perfectly, this was definitely the spot. Needing to get over the fence, without making any noise you picked L up to float him over putting him on the ground gently on the other side.

"Hang on, can't you turn into a bat?" You asked.

"Nope" he replied.

"You can't? You're the only vampire I know who can't"

"I think it's because I was born human, I've just never been able to master it"

L approached the secondary fence that marked off the woods, looking around for anything that could be of use. A footprint, a rip of fabric, a dropped belonging, anything.

"Would the cops have searched this area?" You asked.

"Maybe, but this isn't where the body was found so maybe they just skimmed it over" L replied.

The area was mainly boxes stacked by the dumpster and other bins, a few loose empty cans students threw over the fence to try and make it into one of the bins. You weren't about to go digging through the trash for anything, you doubted the culprits would be dumb enough to dump evidence somewhere the cops could search anyway.

"It doesn't look too hard to climb, and it goes straight into thick Forrest so it's really the perfect escape route" L muttered.

"They would have come around the side, jumped the gate and then used the bins as a stepping stool to jump the fence. Then they could have circled around and come back through the front gates saying they went to the coffin bean or something" you replied.

"Exactly, clearly they planned this out"

Unfortunately it didn't seem there was anything of note around the area, nothing left behind as potential evidence.

"Well this was a bust" you sighed.

"Worth a shot, we still have those shoes to look for in pictures. You find any?" L asked.

"A few potential matches. We'd have to get Frankie to confirm or deny"

Deciding to just go back to the dorms empty handed, you floated L over the fence again and began to head back.

"I feel like unfortunately this is going to happen again before we or the police find anything to lead to a suspect... there's barely anything to go off" you sighed.

"Unfortunately I think so too. Hopefully it'll just be a disappearance and they can be found alive and well before anything else happens to them" L replied.

Hearing the crunching of leaves, you and L stopped in your tracks and listened. Just around the corner you could hear voices and walking, approaching. Immediately internally panicking, you looked around for a place to hide. A slight gap in the wall between the dorm buildings and the main school caught your eye and you quickly grabbed L by the arm and pulled him in with you. It was a tight fit, but you managed to get out of sight. You covered his mouth, as well as yours and held your breath hearing the person approaching.

"I don't know what to do... this is getting out of hand" a voice said.

"Neither do I... like I was on board for the first part but now..." another replied.

"It's too late, we have to finish what was started"

"We gotta hurry up or we'll be caught"

Two hooded figures walked past, not noticing you at all. You couldn't make it any features in the darkness, and you couldn't recognise the voices but they definitely sounded feminine. You waited until the voices got distant before peeking around the corner to see who it was.

As you did you failed to notice L's blushed cheeks at the feeling of your body pressed right up against his and your hand over his mouth. If you didn't move apart soon, he feared you'd be able to feel how hot this was making him.

You only managed to catch a glimpse of the people, both wearing hoods to obscure any features. But clearly they were going to bed after this as they were wearing pyjama pants and slippers. One black with pink hearts and one red with white spots.

When they were out of sight you sighed in relief, that was dangerously close.

"Holy shit that almost gave me a heart attack" you sighed.

Turning back to L, you let his mouth go so he could speak.

"Sorry, that was the instinct..." you said, squeezing out of the gap.

"N-no it's fine... better than getting caught" he stammered.

"I can't tell who that was, you?"

"No idea. Definitely girls though, guess we have more clothes to look out for around the dorms"

You considered following them, but without knowing exactly how far they were wandering you found it too dangerous. If you followed them all the way out to the woods or something the chances of you getting lost, caught or not making it back before morning roll call was a risk. But you did have another lead, two girls sneaking around the same area the two people were before? Suspicious.

Heading back to the dorms with adrenaline still running through your veins, you got back inside undetected, but couldn't stay and chat long without the risk of getting caught awake past lights out.

"Thanks for the help" L said, keeping the noise down so no one in the dorms woke up.

"That impulse decision of yours just got us another lead. We can get into it tomorrow at club time" you replied.

"I'll see you then, goodnight"

"Night night!"

L headed back to his dorm, and as soon as he closed the door he sighed and put a hand to his racing undead heart.

"Holy shit they were so close... so close!" He muttered.

For a ghost you were surprisingly warm, and you smelt so nice, whatever shampoo you used was so good. He'd never been that close to someone he'd liked before, the brief moment had his heart racing more than being almost caught did. Not to mention the slight worry he'd uh... get exited and you'd feel it. That would be embarrassing.

But shit... he wanted to be that close to you again. So, so bad.
