chapter four | sweet

"A run? Will you be taking any sidekicks?" I spoke reluctantly, with a somewhat cocked head. The answer would probably be no, seeing as I'm just a random girl that showed up at their doorstep about an hour ago. They probably don't see me as trustworthy yet.

Aaron's dull blue eyes pierced my heart, sudden nerves engulfing it. My heart stung and prickled as I pondered what his reply was going to be. He inhaled deeply through his nose and raised his eyebrows.

"Well, Angel." He paused and I nodded, that was what they called me, yes.

"You're new here, so maybe not just yet. It's good that you seem eager to help me recruit new members for the safe-zone and get supplies, but we just met you and I bet that you understand why we're a little reluctant to have you out in the field." He said with an apologetic shrug.

"I understand," A fake smile found its way to my lips, causing the corners of my mouth to twitch up in a sinfully sweet smile.

My lips fell into a sour grimace as I whipped around on my heel, striding off semi-angrily in the way opposite of the man and exiting the block to return to my new home.

As I neared my small townhouse, my body collided with the soft torso of a teenage boy around my age. My eyes avoided contact with the boy's dark brown ones.

"S-Sorry.." He muttered, his eyes darting from the brunette girl next to him, who was slightly shorter than me. She was moderately good-looking, her light eyes and pronounced lips. I dared to let my eyes connect with his, and I rolled my eyes. He looked dazed and confused with two attractive girls his age around him. Not only that but a brand new girl to the area that he'd never seen before.

"My fault, you're good." I meekly muttered and resumed my trek back home.

Subsequently a few minutes later, I finally returned home and began getting settled. I climbed up the stairs to the second floor, a large white door stood in front of me, teasing me to open it.

I gave in to the temptation and entered the room. A queen sized bet lay in the smack middle of the room, near the eggshell white wall that I was facing and let my body go limp onto the bed. A rush of euphoria coursed through my veins while my body absorbed the softness of the bed, causing a shiver to run down my spine.

Two outlets entered my realm of vision, although I thought nothing of it until I realized that I had my phone and phone charger in my backpack downstairs.

I leapt off the bed to my feet and sprinted down the stairs, doing anything to get to my phone. I reached my backpack, and a sudden feeling of nausea pooled in my stomach. 'Do you really want to do this, Cassandra?' The question plagued my mind, causing myself to go into a mental debate.

The final verdict was to dump out my backpack onto the floor next to the table. I found my phone and the charger, the tiny box of metal and glass filled with complicated technology paired with its copper wires encased in a long, thin rubber shell were quickly plugged into the wall. The waiting nearly brought me to madness, until the small white Apple appeared on the pitch black screen. A small gasp escaped my lips as my lock screen showed. A picture of me and my father with our bow gear in the middle of a competition out in the boonies shone brightly, causing tears to pool in my eyes.

I slowly slid the lock screen so it turned into the passcode pad. '1968' The year that my father was born. My finger slid the phone screen around to find my pictures. Pictures of my family, my dad... My brother, Isabella and me, my animals... My mother.

I scrolled all the way to the top and let out a choked sob. The first photo in my phone was of a picture frame in my house that had my mother holding a newly born me in her arms.

Warm tears dribbled down my face, urging me to wipe them away. I would have if I wasn't in shock. I resumed swiping until I hit a picture of my dad at his computer in his favorite tan corduroy Dickies jacket.

--

"Cassie-An, what are you doing?" He queried.

"I'm taking a picture of you, daddy!" A young me exclaimed, beaming. Her DS in her small hands. My father turned around with a frown because he hated having his picture taken without permission. He was upset until he saw his little girl smiling with all of the muscles in her mouth, causing him to grin back at her.

"You're so handsome, daddy." She said and leapt up from the bed she was sitting on, throwing herself at her father in a huge bear hug.

--

I wiped my cheeks with my wrist, some of the dirt being transferred onto my face. I realized that if this place has running water... I could shower.

A gasp escaped my mouth as I excitedly ascended the stairs.

I threw open the door and surveyed the room for what could lead to the bathroom. The more were doors that were almost identical to the room's door, but a little smaller on each side of the room. I promenaded across the room to the right door, revealing a medium sized room that had pastel blue walls and a clean, slanted white ceiling. There was a small twin sized bed in the corner directly next to each wall that met, with a pure white comforter with sections that were pleated. About one foot vertically down the comforter was filled horizontally with pleats. There was a small strip of white fabric that separated each section from the other. It was cleanly made up, a plain white side table sat in the little corner between the side of the bed and the wall. I looked at the posters on the wall, various posters reminding me of who I was before the world changed. The scared teenage girl that I was before this world changed me.

I quickly shuffled out of the room, slamming the door behind me. My feet hastily made their way to the other side of the room. I forced open the door and put my phone on the edge of the sink. I looked into the mirror and froze. The mirror spat back half of my body to my eyes. The scanty malnutrition causing my skin to be stretched out across my bones, my elbow jutting out like a sore thumb. I ran my hand over an elbow and sighed. A mix of dirt and blood still plagued my entire body. There was something about seeing your reflection after going months without even knowing what you look like that really put your panties in a twist.

Well, that took forever.
I'm sorry it took so long. But here it is! Hope you liked it.
