A Tango with Fire, Dangerous, and Beautiful
Jess Pov.
I can't deal with this right now. I need some stress relief. I'm just going to fly out the window, maybe visit Thor. I lift the bottom of the window, and dive out. I lift upward, summoning my wings. It's too dark for anyone to see me hopefully. The feeling is amazing! My bandanna slips off in the wind, but I don't care. I use my wings to propel me into the clouds. The air is so much clearer here! I do loops around them, just enjoying the feeling of weightlessness. After an hour long flight, I arrive at Asgard. I built this for dad, because the Asgardians showed up. They needed a home, and a king, so Thor was a natural choice. I still get a little bit of nostalgia at seeing it. Like the old days. Stark making fun of Thor because I outdrank him. 'Where's your Asgardian pride', is what he'd ask dad. Oh, Wolvie would always keep trying to surpass me, but I always got him down in one hit. I would drag Diana around for girls days! It was fun, to say the least. I walk in, but something stops me from going to the ballroom where I usually go. Loki is here. I can kill him. Dad would be angry, but he'd get over it. I start sprinting to the prison cells, determined to see him. I walk slower when I make it to the hall. I see Harley is still here, good. She shoots me a venomous glare, and I do something really childish. I stick my tongue out at her. "Mean lady." She spits. I just walk away triumphantly. But what stops me in my tracks is when I hear a voice down the hall.
"Don't you? You've asked all these questions about her." Loki. There's a moment of silence before all hell breaks loose.
"What?!" Oh that's Katz! I duck into the nearest empty cell.
"Sh-She's -Sh-She" The stuttering one seems to be Sly. What are they surprised about? Unless... no Loki wouldn't! He knows I'd kill him if he did! Did he?! I hear a sob, presumably Kala.
"Oh goddess! I'm so sorry Jess!" I'll kill the bastard! He actually told them! I'll gut him with his own staff!
"She's L-Lady Thor." Steven is in shock. I know why Thor gave them the mission, even if it isn't to recruit me, it's his purpose. He's been trying for what? Fifty years? He's been trying fifty years to recruit me. I get ready, and run from the cell. Never should of entertained his idea, it only leads to situations like this! I think they heard me, but didn't see me. I turn countless halls, until finally reaching the ballroom. I crumple against the wall. Why me? Why does the world spit on my existence? What did I do to deserve this? I tried to push back my heritage, and become a hero. I loved, but it only came to bite me in the ass. I- I just wanted to help them.
"Why does this always happen to you, potato?" I froze at the voice. Aaron. I look up to see him outstretch his hand to me. It's only a hologram, get it together Jess! This ballroom was made to do that, allow me to see my friends. "Like old times?" He asks. I study him, his perfect smile, wonderful ab- I mean hair, yeah uh hair.
"Like old times." I grab his hand, and he whirls me around the dance floor. It starts to play a tango, and we pick up the pace. I think of my old friends, and they appear. Katelyn, KC, everyone from Mystreet! I think of everyone from my past. Adam, Alesa, Barney, Jin, all here, dancing with us. Soon the room shifts, and we're in proper outfits. My dress is a flowing purple, with a tight waistline.
I almost bump into a hologram Stark as I turn. Diana is pulling Clark around on the floor. Ha! I've always shipped them! Even if they are all holograms, they have their personalities. Aaron spins me, then dips me on his arm. I swing upward, giving Aaron a peck on the cheek as I do. Then I spot them. Levin, Malachi, Lilith, and Alina are all standing on the tables, messing around. I break the close contact between Aaron, and I, to run to them. I embrace them in a bear hug, tears stinging my eyes.
"I'm so sorry. Mama failed you." I cry. Lilith shakes her head.
"No Mama! We know you couldn't have done anything except die with us! We love you!" She argues. I feel a pang of regret.
"I should have done that. I should have died!" I sob. Malachi gives me a disbelieving look.
"No! You would really throw your life away like that!? That wouldn't have helped at all!" He reasons. My little boy is all grown up!
"It would have made me satisfied. You would have been calmer. I wanted to tell you guys something." I break the hug, and lean back.
"Ok Mama!" He, and Alina are still really young. He is five, Alina is four. Malachi is nine, and Lilith is seven.
"Don't be mad at Papa, ok?" I ask.
"Okay Mama!" Alina giggles.
"The reason this all happened was because Papa told who Grandpa is." I explain. Malachi seems to be the only one who understands.
"What?! How could he?!" He is enraged.
"Malachi!" I put a hand on his shoulder. He tries to calm down.
"I-I!" A sob racks his body. I hug him, curling him into my chest.
"It's ok. He died after, though I'm not sure how." Malachi just cries more.
"M-Mama, who's that?" Alina asks. She points to a bewildered looking Katz, staring at us! The illusion shatters, and I see the whole Few scattered on the empty floor. My clothes stay the same though.
"Why are you here?!" I ask angrily.
"I-I uh..." Katz trails off, suddenly reddening. "Y-You I- What was th-that?!"
"The only place I can see them. I know what Loki told you." I answer, being cryptic just to get on their nerves.
"Y-You're L-Lady Th-Thor!" Pbat stutters.
"It's really been too long since I was called that." I feel nostalgic for the time when that was my everyday name to some people. "Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going back to the only thing I haven't completely failed at. Dancing. You're free to join me." I raise my arms, and the illusion is back. The kids are gone though. I twist around, leaving the Few to try, and escape the sea of people. I don't see Aaron, but it seems Thor has figured out there's a party without him. He's walking in the doorway, and waves me over.
"Another ball of yours?" He inquires.
"It's the only place I can see my friends, give me a break!" I whine. He chuckles.
"At least give your stepfather a dance?" I take his hand.
"Of course, but I think of you as a real father you know!" He tugs me around the dance floor. When a fast paced song comes on, the dance floor groups in a line, male to female. Thor, and I separate, and I notice Diana is pulling the confused Few to the floor. The room shuffles, to the edges, and we rotate partners. I find myself face to face with Diana. She always likes to dance the male part, so she can be in charge. I view her as an aunt, like I see the other original superheroes as uncles, and aunts. Diana twirls me around on the floor. We all get in a line of dancers making an arch with their hands for people to walk under. We go in last, Diana dipping me at the end. We split apart when the dance floor switches partners. "Always good to dance with you, Diana!" We wave to each other, as I get my new partner. Jin. None of these guys know who I am in the real world, but they do here.
"Hey!" He calls. "Long time no see!" He leads me across the ballroom, doing a gentlemanly bow. He places his hand on the small of my back, and we practically float on the floor. When we turn parallel to another two, he spins me toward them. I see Kala switch off with me, and land right into Jin, who gracefully twirls her. I find myself with a very surprised, confused, and red Sly. Why is he blushing?
"Can I get any answers to what is going on?!" He asks, baffled. I don't answer, and I get a very devilish idea.
"Lets see if you're as good a tango partner as your father!" I yell. The whole ballroom quiets, and everybody is still for a moment. Until a small voice speaks out.
"Did she say tango?!" The floor clears, eager to see what I do this time. I clap, and there's a moment of silence until a tango song starts up. Sly is absolutely clueless, and I don't blame him. I've given about a billion questions, and every time I answer one, three more take it's place.
"Wh-I h-have zero i-idea what's happening!" He exclaims.
"I'll give you answers if you dance! Come on Stark, too scared? Afraid your father is a better tango partner?" I know what button I pressed. Most hero kids spend their whole life trying to surpass their parents, and as far as I know, I'm the only one who has succeeded. Sly has a look of determination.
"Alright, I'll play your game." He reaches for my hand, and hesitantly starts to pull me around the floor. We step in a perfect tandem, all eyes on us. I feel my outfit change to match the music, and Sly is in a red, and black tux.
He spins me to the side, and I use the friction on the floor to ignite a flame where my feet are. Sly jumps in surprise, but recovers fast enough to catch, and dip me. I lose myself in the dance, and see Sly has too. When the song ends a huge round of applause comes from the sidelines. We end with a very cliche pose, because Author is cliche, and boring. I mean...uh...fourth wall?
The people file back onto the floor, and I am faced with a very confused, slightly angry Few, that really want answers. I sigh. "I guess this is overdue."
