Chapter 31: Heaven Help Us All
One Week After "Broken Promises and Birthday Wishes"...
After Dean and Cassandra had woken up from their nap they had gotten ready for dinner. It all went smoothly, something they could rarely say. The food was great and the staff was good, but Cassandra was right when she said that it would burn a hole in her wallet. She lacked enough cash to pay for their meal so Dean used one of his scammed credit cards instead. They had both agreed to never go back as it reminded them of a peaceful life that they could never have.
Sam and Dean had gone to work a case in Sioux Falls concerning a Cupid, but Cassandra opted to go back to the mansion and get in some more training. In reality she was waiting for Michael to show up. He did just as planned.
"How was dinner with Dean?" he had asked as he watched his daughter throw punches to a dummy in the middle of the main room. He leaned against the wall behind it, only earning a brief glance from the sweaty blonde.
"It was fine," she grunted out between punches. Michael frowned slightly but nodded and licked his lips, glancing around the mansion before his gaze settled on his daughter. She looked up upon hearing his silence, furrowing her eyebrows. "Something on your mind? Thanks to Raphael I'm a therapist now so please, do confide." He chuckled slightly and shook his head. She continued to assault the dummy, spinning around and landing a kick to the side. It shook slightly.
"I'm just proud of you."
"I haven't done anything."
"When I first met you, Cassandra, you had no idea how to use your powers. You were nothing but skin and bone and you were broken. Look at how far you've come. Castiel and the Winchesters have done so much for you as a warrior. You are everything I've ever imagined," Michael explained. Cassandra stopped and pushed a stray lock of hair away from her face, wiping away the sweat on her forehead as she panted, struggling to catch her breath.
"I barely have any skill and experience. Like you said; I have a lot to learn in such little time. There's not much to be proud of," she reasoned with a shrug. Instead of continuing her physical training, Cassandra retreated to the kitchen counter where her ice cold water bottle rested. She flipped open the lid and brought it to her lips, taking a few sips before pulling it away. "So you came here to go over plans. Let's talk plans."
"We don't have much as of now. We're still trying to locate Lucifer," Michael admitted. Cassandra furrowed her eyebrows.
"Then why are you here?"
"Maybe you had ideas for once we found him." Michael stayed silent for a moment, watching her. She took another sip as she leaned back against the counter in thought. Cassandra knew that her father truly didn't want to kill Lucifer, but he wasn't about to disobey. Rebellion was the whole reason they were in this mess.
"Hey, Sam let Lucifer out. Where exactly was he?" Cassandra questioned. Michael, unsure of where this was going, replied warily:
"His Cage. Why?"
"Well, if there was a key to let him out then there has to be a key to lock him back in, right?"
"Are you suggesting we put him back in time out?" Michael inquired. Cassandra nodded her head to the side. "That's great, but what happens when someone pokes at the Cage again? The Winchester bloodline may not exist anymore and they are our true vessels. We will be completely and utterly screwed. It's not a risk we can take." The Nephilim sighed and shook her head, her gaze dropping to the floor. She rolled her bottom lip between her teeth in thought. Was she really considering taking his full deal and continuing the bloodline?
"The deal you had offered back in Heaven...if I helped lock up Lucifer then could it work? We take care of the Devil and I get the dream life, thus continuing on your bloodline. When Heaven wants something to happen then they'll make it happen."
"It could only work if Dean also says yes," Michael replied softly. Cassandra's face fell. "I'd scrub his mind of all memories from hunting while I'm possessing him, take your Grace and lock it up in a safe place, and keep watch over you. In order to do all of that I'd have to be in my true vessel or of the bloodline, like I did with John in nineteen-seventy-eight. I'm sorry, Cassandra." She sighed and shook her head.
"No, I get it. It's fine. We just have to come up with something else. Dean will never say yes. Not with Bobby and Sam still around."
Michael raised his eyebrows slightly, leaning forward slightly. "Perhaps you could convince him?" Cassandra narrowed her eyes at her father. "Just a little nudge in the direction of saying yes. Nothing direct. He loves you more than you know," Michael told her. Cassandra let out a laugh and shook her head.
"Yeah, right," she replied sarcastically, still smiling amusedly as she took a sip of her water. Michael frowned.
"I'm serious, Cassandra. Every angel knows it. Even Sam and Bobby Singer know it. The way he looks at you...well, it's how I once looked at your mother." Cassandra froze and she slowly looked up at her father, pulling the bottle away from her lips.
"What?" she choked out, eyes wide. Michael nodded. The Nephilim couldn't bring herself to believe that Michael had actually loved her mother. She believed that it was just a one night thing that ended with an accident. "No." Michael's expression said otherwise. "Seriously?"
"I'm an archangel, Cassandra. I don't sleep with random women." She held her hands up in surrender. "It was one-sided. She was head over heels for Jessica's father and I was just a mere mistake. When she found out she was pregnant I panicked. Nephilims are abominations and are to be killed before they're even born. It's rare that one slips from our grasp, but with you I managed to find a way to protect you."
"You made me out to be a weapon," Cassandra realized. Michael nodded with a sad smile. "You were just protecting my mom and I."
"I told you that I love you and I was telling the truth. I was there the day you were born disguised as a doctor. I knew you were mine because of what happened." Cassandra eyed him warily. "Power outages, lights flickering, windows and light bulbs shattering; it was all signs of a powerful, supernatural birth. You were stronger than I ever imagined. I suppose being part archangel will do that," Michael explained.
"And my mom? Did she ever know you were there?"
"No. She was too ashamed of her affair. She told her husband that you were his and he believed it. Traits that didn't match his were believed to be recessive and he was content with it. He loves you. He still does."
"He left us," Cassandra sneered, tears welling in her eyes. "My mom and I were broken and he just up and left for another woman. He started another family, one where he had two kids who were happy and normal. He's dead to me."
"He's tried calling your old number," Michael informed her. Cassandra recoiled at his words. Her dad hadn't tried contacting her in years. "After your mother died and he found out you were missing he kept calling. I've kept watch over him and he misses you. He worries for you. I think you should see him."
"The world may be ending and you want me to see that douchebag?" she spat.
"I want you to see 'that douchebag' because the world may be ending. It could be your only chance, Cassandra. He's hurting."
"So was I when he walked out on Mom and I!"
"He was hurting in his own way. You and Jess were too similar and he couldn't bear the fact that he had lost his true daughter," Michael defended. Cassandra shook her head and scoffed, glancing away as she crossed her arms over her chest. "He lives in Brandon, South Dakota. I can give you his address if you'd like. I believe you need to see him."
"I'm a missing person who Dean supposedly kidnapped. It's not smart to show my face," Cassandra argued. Michael chuckled softly.
"You and Dean will be fine. In fact, I think you should take Dean with you. Let him meet some of your family. He doesn't like me very much."
"What gives you that idea?" Cassandra retorted sarcastically. Michael only rolled his eyes, shaking his head. The blonde sighed in defeat. "What's his address?"
~*~
Cassandra had waited patiently at Bobby's for Sam and Dean to return from their hunt. She avoided all conversation with the older Hunter, hiding out in Dean's room. She assumed that he didn't even know she was there.
It wasn't until Dean walked in his room that he realized just how much this last case had shaken him up. Cupid had told him something, something he wasn't sure Cassandra would be able to handle just yet. The blonde looked up at the sound of the door opening, trying her best to force a grin on her lips. It didn't work.
"Hey," Dean greeted, closing the door behind him.
"So, I've been thinking," Cassandra started. Dean nodded slowly, gesturing for her to continue. "The end of the world may be coming to an end and I just found out that my dad lives not even half an hour from here. I was wondering if you wanted to come see him with me." Dean's eyebrows rose in shock at the sudden suggestion, not at all expecting anything to do with family.
"Your dad?"
She nodded her head to the side. "Jessica's dad, but he is the one who raised me, yeah. What do you say? You don't have to, Dean, it was just a —"
"When can we leave?"
Cassandra's lips curled into a grin. A real grin, one that stretched from ear-to-ear and was completely genuine. "I don't have a number to call ahead so we can leave whenever you want," she said with an excited laugh. Dean nodded, watching as she got up and walked over to him. He pulled the blonde into a tight hug, relaxing slightly when she nuzzled her head in his neck.
"Let's leave now before Bobby throws another case at us. I'm already showered and everything." Cassandra nodded and pulled away. "Does this mean I get to see baby pictures?" Dean inquired. Cassandra's cheeks tinted red and she rolled her lips into a thin line, biting back a laugh. Dean grinned and pumped his fist in the air.
"Let's go, you ass," Cassandra teased, ushering him out of the room. Dean slipped his handgun in the back waistband of his jeans before following her out the door, sneaking off to the Impala. The Hunter sent Sam a quick text saying that he was going to go out with Cassandra and that he'd be back later. The couple piled into the Impala, Cassandra handing him the address. "Here we go."
~*~
Cassandra had been excited to see her father again. She was all giggles and grins up until she stepped onto that wooden porch, her fist raised to rap against the wood. She had stopped, her smile falling and her breath hitching in her throat. Dean noticed this and placed a gentle arm on her shoulder. "Princess?"
"What if he doesn't accept me? He has a new family, Dean," she whispered. Dean glanced at his girlfriend before looking back to the freshly painted baby blue door.
"Then we leave. Screw him if he doesn't want you back. He'd be missing out." Dean leaned forward and grabbed her chin, turning her head to look at him. He managed a smile smile before leaning forward, placing a kiss on her blood red lips. "The only person's acceptance that matters is yours. If this doesn't work then we'll go back to Bobby's and drown ourselves in lore and alcohol. Sound good?" Cassandra let out a shaky breath and nodded, forcing a smile on her lips. Dean took a step back and knocked on the door for her.
The couple waited in silence for only a single moment before small footsteps smacked against what sounded like a wooden floor, yells and giggles echoing throughout the house. "I got it!" a young feminine voice cried out.
"No, I wanna answer it!" a boy argued. Dean and Cassandra both jumped back as the door flew open to reveal two young blonde children with ocean blue eyes that had matched Jess'. Cassandra's lips parted slightly in shock. The girl bore a striking resemblance to the Nephilim's younger half-sister. Cassandra was too deep in thought to realize that she hadn't said anything, so Dean nudged her side.
"Cassy?" he asked, eyebrows scrunched together with worry. She turned her head to look at him before looking back to the children. She snapped back to reality and cleared her throat.
"Is Daniel Moore home?" Cassandra managed. The children nodded, the boy turned and glanced over his shoulder towards the kitchen.
"Dad, there's someone here to see you!" he shouted. Suddenly the girl shoved him, causing him to drop the soccer ball that he had been holding. "Sofie," he whined as the ball rolled out the front door. Cassandra quickly raced forward and stopped it, muscle memory taking over from her days of soccer. She picked it up and brought it back to the twins just as Daniel Moore stopped in the doorway.
"Cassandra," Daniel breathed. She laughed softly and nodded, handing the ball back to the children. They ran off with it, their laughter floating throughout the house. "I thought you were dead."
"Not dead, just busy," she replied. He smiled, but the smile fell when he saw Dean. His gaze hardened and he reached out to punch Dean when Cassandra caught his fist swiftly, stopping him. Both Dean and Daniel stared at her in shock. "Don't hurt him. He's my boyfriend."
"He kidnapped you," Daniel argued.
"I went willingly." Dean nodded his head to the side.
"Well, I wouldn't say willingly..." Cassandra shot him a sharp glare that let him know the shut up. Dean cleared his throat and nodded, obliging. "Yeah, she went willingly," he said with a smile. The blonde looked back to her dad.
"It's a long story."
"Well, come in a tell me then," Daniel told her. She nodded and stepped in, Dean trailing behind her. Her eyes skimmed over the kitchen and the living room before she glanced over her shoulder to make sure Dean was in the house. "How'd you know where I live?"
"Someone gave me your address," she muttered distractedly, furrowing her eyebrows when her gaze landed on one particular photograph. It was the same one she had in room in her mansion. The same one Dean had picked up and asked her about.
Daniel gestured for them to follow him into the living room where they took a seat, Cassandra and Dean on the loveseat while Daniel sat in his chair across from the couple. "What made you decide to finally visit me after almost five years?"
"Well, it's the end of the world," Cassandra said with a small smile. Dean chuckled nervously as the normal human eyed them warily. "Quite literally. Biblical Apocalypse, the whole shabang."
"You're an Atheist," Daniel said slowly. Cassandra wiped her palms across her thighs, shaking her head.
"Uh, no. Not anymore. I was proved very wrong very fast. It turns out that angels do exist and they're just major douchebags. Along with demons, vampires, werewolves, Prophets, and Nephilims," Cassandra told him. Daniel arched an eyebrow.
"What's a Nephilim?"
"A human and angel hybrid," Dean chimed in. "Yeah, or, uh, they could be an archangel and human hybrid. Those are really powerful." He glanced over at the blonde next to him. "And hot," he added under his breath. Cassandra bit her bottom lip to hide her smile and her gaze dropped to her lap.
"So what made you decide that all of these...creatures are real?" Daniel decided to ask. Cassandra and Dean exchanged glances before looking back to him.
"I went with Dean, Sam, and Castiel because they needed to keep me safe. I'm a weapon of Heaven, a powerful one at that. Yeah, uh, so I'm not your child apparently," Cassandra said, her eyes squinted slightly. "Yeah, my father's name is Michael. As in the Michael. Like the Michael who booted Lucifer's ass to the basement, which also means that the Devil is my uncle. Mom really knows how to pick 'em." Daniel sighed and ran a hand down his face, shaking his head.
"I know."
Cassandra's eyes widened, as did Dean's.
"When you were five you threw a temper tantrum because I didn't get you some Barbie doll that you had wanted. It spun out of control when we got home and you screamed and the lights flickered before some vases around us shattered. I had no idea what was going on...and then your mother came home."
"You both knew," Cassandra whispered. Daniel nodded and licked his lips.
"Yeah. It's why we let you continue to believe that none of this existed." He looked up at the Hunter and the Nephilim. "Your mother had explained everything to me. She explained the significance of your middle name and she also explained that you were an abomination; that you'd be hunted. I didn't think you'd find out."
"Mom's dead because I was in the dark and couldn't protect her from an angel," Cassandra said, her voice cracking as tears welled in her eyes. "Jess died at the hands of Azazel, a demon, because he needed Sam, Dean, and I to cross paths. I tried killing myself because of the voices. I tried killing myself because I had no idea that they were actually angels speaking. Do you have any idea what I've gone through?"
Dean's heart dropped when he caught sight of a single tear slip down the blonde's cheek. Both of her parents had kept this from her her entire life and people had died because of it. She had come to see her father to forgive him and try to start over, but now it would only make things worse.
"I know. I'm sorry," Daniel muttered, shaking his head.
"Are you really?"
"Of course I am! Do you know how hard it was for me at your mother's funeral? I had to bury my first love next to my daughter's empty casket, all while the woman I called my own child was missing and kidnapped by a dead serial killer! That was the worst day next to getting the call about Jess," Daniel hissed, his fists clenching in his lap. Cassandra only stared back at him, afraid to speak. She was afraid she'd break down if she did.
"Princess, we can leave or we can stay. It's up to you," Dean told her softly, placing a comforting hand on her thigh.
"You left us," Cassandra whimpered. "You left us when we needed you the most. You ran off with some woman that you had knocked up and you left us alone and broken. I've lost everything. Everything, Dad. My mom, my sister, my friends, my normal life; I lost any and all hope of returning to a peaceful life. That could have been avoided if you had just told me the truth. Why does everyone feel the need to lie to me?"
"I wanted to tell you but it was your mom that didn't. It's part of the reason I left."
"She didn't control your life. God, you're just as bad as him. You act like some loyal lapdog and believe that you're doing something for the greater good and all you do is cause death and destruction."
Dean and Daniel exchanged confused glances before looking back to the Nephilim. "Like who?" they chorused.
"Coming here was a mistake."
"Please stay," Daniel begged. "I'm cooking dinner and there's plenty for you and Dean. I miss you, Cassandra. I want to talk with you and catch up. I was wrong for lying to you but I won't lie again. I promise." Dean squeezed her thigh, grabbing her attention.
"It's up to you."
Cassandra opened her mouth to reply but before she could form any words the two children came racing in, running over to their father. Cassandra's heart lurched at the happiness and love in their eyes. They loved and admired their father. It was something Cassandra could never see unless she got Dean to say yes, but she wasn't going to use him like that. It was wrong; manipulative. She'd never do that.
"Daddy, Mommy just called. She said that her flight got delayed and that she'd be home tomorrow night instead. She said to tell you," the young girl said. Daniel smiled and nodded.
"Alright. Jo, can you give Daddy a moment?"
Jo. Cassandra's heart tugged at the name and she could see Dean's expression falter slightly.
Jo nodded and grabbed her brother's arm, pulling him away. Daniel met Cassandra's gaze once again. "Please stay, Cassandra."
"What are their full names?" she blurted out. Daniel furrowed his eyebrows, slightly confused by the sudden question.
"Uh, Josette Ann and Daniel James. Why?"
Cassandra wasn't sure if it was relief or disappointment when she realized that it wasn't the same name. This little girl shouldn't remind her of the only friend she had lost. She wasn't the same. She wasn't a Huntress and she had no knowledge of the supernatural. She was innocent.
"Just curious."
"So are you staying?"
"I...I can't." Daniel's face fell. "I'm sorry. I need to go. I can't—I can't be here. Dean, let's go," Cassandra said, standing up from her seat. Dean eye her in confusion but obeyed, following her to the front door. Daniel got up and raced after them.
"Cassandra, wait. I don't understand one thing." She stopped and turned towards the man. "This life, why are you in it? Why can't you just leave if you're not happy?" Daniel questioned.
"Because I am happy. I have Dean and Sam, Jess' boyfriend from college." Daniel's eyes widened in shock. He obviously hadn't been expecting that. No one from the Moore family had had the honor of meeting Sam before Jess was killed. "I need to go. I shouldn't have come."
Cassandra and Dean left without another word. Daniel watched them go, the couple slipping into the Impala before the car pulled out of the driveway and took off down the street. His eyes flickered to black and he scowled, clenching his fists at his sides. He had been so close.
Short and crappy chapter, I know. What do you think of Cassandra helping Michael? Yay or nay? And what do you think of Daniel Moore? Do you think he'll play a big or any part later on in the story?
