~*~ Chapter 8 - A Snake in the Forest ~*~
The light of the day was fading now, casting the house into shadows. For some, this brought fear and dark thoughts but for Deceit, the darkness had always been a comfort. It was an escape from the cruel gaze of a judgmental world. Within the shadows he had nothing to fear, they were his home.
Slipping into Roman's room, Deceit used his powers to make sure the fanciful angel wouldn't know what was happening, then he slipped into the pocket world. It was strange to step past the vail into beautiful rolling fields, barely lit by the light of the night. Though Roman's imagination was normally bright and luminous, it still followed the day and night cycles of the real world.
To the left was a forest, though it missed the usual dark mysterious quality that Deceit loved. To the right was Roman's castle, towering over a city filled with sleeping people, though they were all just figments of Roman's imagination. This was just like him, unbelievably extra. Deceit sighed and began walking through the fields stepping on immaculately crafted flowers that smelled like early spring. Despite being crushed under his boots, they still looked perfect. It was all just a beautiful lie. He respected that, but it was unnecessary. Roman could have constructed a much smaller area and it would have been sufficient. Then again, much of this had sprung up as an escape. Losing Virgil had hurt everyone.
The two moons hung high in the sky, lighting up the forest path. Much like most of the things in Roman's world, the second moon served no practical purpose, but it was gorgeous. "In another life, he would have been a creator instead of a warrior." Deceit whispered to himself. "Though his arrogance might have made things interesting."
He had honestly been surprised when he learned that Roman was not keeping Remus in the dungeon of the castle, chained and locked within Roman's careful creation. Instead Roman had imagined a new area just for Remus. This was a place where the demon's own imagination could run wild, trapped only by a barrier magic. He could not fathom why Roman would let this obvious trash man, have that much freedom."Demon, are you here?" He called out after traveling into the depths of the forest and finding the barrier that separates him from Remus.
"Oooh, the snake in my butt is back. How can I be of service?"
Deceit rolled his eyes, watching as the other man hung upside down for a tree that literally seemed to ooze out of every crack.
"I came to continue our discussion from earlier."
"You mean the one where I get my freedom and you gain a happily ever after. I'll have to admit, that sounds very boring."
"Really, so you have no desire to shake up the status quo of established laws?" He pretended to look at his nails, though all he saw were his bright yellow gloves. "I really expected you to be more interesting than that."
Remus laughed maniacally. "Oh I am, but I don't really see what I get out of this. I'm right where I want. Little angel boy is forced to be separated from his soulmate so that he can keep me in check. This is a winning scenario for me. The slow and brutal torture of separating the Angel from what he loves. He'll snap, you'll see. The only problem is I won't be out to see it. Maybe he will kill me. That would be a twist."
"The cat is being returned to his hybrid form tomorrow. He will have access to come and go as he pleases." Deceit kept his voice calm, gesturing with his hand as he talked, "Which means tomorrow, you become nothing more than a minor inconvenience in their love story."
The demon narrowed his eyes at Deceit, finally jumping out of the tree and coming face to face with the snake. "And what would your family think if they knew you were helping me?"
"There are many things they don't know about me, what's one more?" That was actually one of Deceit's fears. He had fought so hard to repair the trust he had lost five years ago, and with Virgil back, he knew it was only a matter of time before their trust was destroyed again. He wanted them to love him, but they would never fully accept a snake in their garden. Maybe if he could... it was possible... he had to focus.
"Well, aren't you a hoot and a half. What if I agreed? What would you do then?"
"Convince the others to let you go."
"And if I turned on you."
"Would you?"
"Hmm, I don't know, I'm unpredictable like that." He smiled a toothy grin that made Deceit regret his decision.
Opening his mouth to retort, a thread of gold magic left his coat and his eyes went wide. Muttering curses under his breath he looked at Remus. "I'll be back."
"I'll be waiting." He cooed, watching as Deceit ran off. "Next time I get to ask the questions!" Deceit ignored him, following the thread of magic.
When he was back in Roman's room, he watched as the magic slid under the door. He knew where it was going. There was only one person right now who it could be going to. Silently rushing out of the room Deceit stood at the now closed door. He waited.
Closing his eyes he focused on the sounds of the house, counting his way down from 60. At 46, he could hear the thrashing. At 25, he could hear the soft whimpers. At 12, he could hear the labored breathing. He began to knock on Roman's door none too quietly.
It was not long before Roman came to the door, sleep and confusion on his face. "What do you want Deceit?" Roman asked with a yawn, his hair still tossed in weird angles.
"Go take care of your stupid pet. He was making weird noises when I walked passed his room." Deceit faked a yawn as he turned to leave, having seen just enough of Roman's eyes to know the man was now fully awake.
The only two people who could help Virgil through an attack were Patton and Roman. Anyone else who tried normally ended up with a few scratches, at least. Deceit had never tried, but he had never had a good relationship with Virgil.
Stealing a glance back at the door, he wondered if he should wake Patton up. A show of good faith that he was trying to make sure Roman could do what he needed to do. The thread hadn't been as strong, Roman should be fine to handle this on his own.
Thoughts still clouded with his mind as he walked back to his room. He could tell that Remus was beginning to think about his offer, but he could also tell that Remus was not one for deep thought about a situation. He was impulsive. This might take more work on his part than he was initially planning. A real yawn left his lips. Was it weird to get a strange sort of excitement from his impulsive nature? Finally, there was something new, something unpredictable.
AN: Sorry this came out late y'all. I am on vacation and we lost power and internet access so even though it was edited I couldn't post X_X Hope you enjoyed a little taste of Deceit's thoughts on the situation.
