~*~ Chapter 6 - Questions ~*~
Roman heard Patton gasp and jumped into action immediately. His body had been relaxed, his eyes closed as he listened to Patton's story, but something was wrong. He wouldn't fail to protect Virgil again. As he pushed the door open slowly, there was silence, then suddenly a mewl of pain. Now or never! He threw open the door, celestial sword in hand. "Patton what happened?" His voice was frantic and he had hoped Patton's calming presence would help.
It didn't.
Patton's eyes were filled with fear as he looked up at Roman. Virgil lay there, shaking and thrashing. No matter how many times Roman had seen his beloved go through a panic attack, it hurt each time. He wished he could take this away from Virgil. Dissipating his sword he walked slowly over to Patton.
"A thread of magic entered his heart and his eyes went hazy for a little bit before he started shaking. He is whimpering about a fire." At the words Patton's eyes seemed to flash with recognition. "I... I think he got some of his memories back. A thread of his past." He tried to smile at the joke but they were both too concerned for the smile to reach Patton's eyes.
"What fire?"
"I... we don't talk about it, but the reason I left my last home was because Virgil was being hunted down." Patton whimpered as Virgil dug his claws subconsciously into Patton's leg.
"Maybe another time." Roman rubbed Patton's shoulder. They both needed to focus on Virgil. Quickly getting up, Roman went over to the dresser and pulled a small thunder vest out of the drawer. Patton's gentle petting and reassuring words seemed to be helping a little bit, Roman was thankful that this wasn't going to be a bad one. He and Patton were always the first to help when Virgil had an attack. Whoever was closest would come to his aid and just be there with him if that's what he needed. Too many people could be overwhelming, so most of the time only one of them stayed but Roman didn't want to leave Virgil's side. He missed Virgil dearly. Still, he knew in the back of his mind, he had to return. He had been gone from his room for longer than he should have.
"Patton, I have to go back to my room."
The witch looked at him with sad eyes before slowly nodding. "I get it."
Handing Patton the vest, Roman turned to walk out of the door, his hand hesitating on the knob. He didn't want to leave Virgil again, not like this, but it was only temporary. When Virgil regained more of his memories, or when he figured out a way to confine Remus without him needing to hide in his room, they could see each other again. Roman tore himself away and closed the door behind him. He had to protect everyone in his house, Virgil especially. Patton could take care of him emotionally. Roman would focus on the physical for now. He had to keep Remus in place.
Returning to his room he sat on the bed, his eyes falling downcast as he felt his energy refuel the door to his imagination. Almost as if he could sense Roman's presence, Deceit opened up the door and walked out, pulling at his gloves.
"Well aren't you looking wonderful." Deceit said, his eyebrow raised. Considering Roman had just gone to see Virgil, he had a guess as to what this was about.
"Thanks, I don't feel it though."
Dee sighed, he really hated how dense Roman could be sometimes. He wouldn't say anything about it though. "I know I don't really have the right to ask. This is partially my fault after all, but is everything okay? Is something wrong with the cat?"
Roman nodded slowly. "He had an attack, and though that's kind of normal. It's had not being able to be there for him."
"Couldn't you have stayed longer? I was watching the crazy little gremlin."
That made Roman smile weakly. He was a gremlin wasn't he? "No, I don't know how strong he is." Plus Roman still didn't fully trust Deceit. "Did he say anything interesting?"
"No," Deceit let out an exasperated sigh. "It was worse than trying to have a conversation with the human." Deceit didn't like to refer to any of them by their actual names. "Except, rather than being corrected constantly, I'm being interrupted." He let out a soft hiss. "I will tell you he is very honest, a bit too honest. He has no filter."
"I know you are not a fan of honesty, but can too much honesty really be a bad thing."
Deceit looked Roman in his eyes, "He has told me all of his sexual preferences, in detail." He enunciated the last two words for emphasis.
"Point taken." The snake like man began to stand before Roman stopped him. "One last thing Dee-"
"I wish you all would stop using that stupid nickname."
"You could tell me your real name instead?"
Deceit waved him off, refusing to speak that truth.
"Worth a shot. Do you think Remus could be appeased? Something other than our predestined ultimatum?"
He shrugged. "Honestly, I don't know him that well. He seems to thrive off chaos, so unless you are willing to give him that. You may have to actually kill the gremlin."
Roman nodded, "Thank you Deceit."
What was that emotion that flashed through Deceit's eyes? He shrugged, not saying a word as he left. Roman was once again alone with his thoughts.
Where had the magic come that had given Virgil his memories back? Did he have them all back or was it just the memories from when he was younger? What fire was Patton talking about? He closed his eyes and lay back on his bed. Should he tell Virgil about their history or should he let Virgil find out on his own? If Virgil got his memories back slowly would they end up as enemies again? There were so many problems, and he really wanted to figure out a way to solve all of them.
Roman flopped onto his bed, looking up at the ceiling. He loved challenges, but not when his loved ones were at stake. One question entered his mind and stuck, sending a shiver down his spine. What happened in the two years of unaccounted time? Could those two years have made Virgil no longer love him?
