~*~ Chapter 26 - Setting the Stage ~*~
Waking up out of unconsciousness was completely different than waking up from sleep. First off, Logan's head ached. Secondly, his mouth was dry and he felt cold. Opening his eyes Logan was thankful that he at least had his glasses. Being able to see was a luxury he was appreciative at this point. With his vision returning the next sense that he focused on was his hearing. There was the sound of twisted laughter and pacing, Virgil was apparently the one pacing, still stuck in a cat form, and Remus was laughing, standing outside of the bars and speaking with Deceit.
He needed to focus now. He had to be helpful to his family. "Virgil, come here, you need to calm down." Logan said, rubbing the back of his head and doing an exercise with his hands to check for head trauma. It was rudimentary but it would have to work for the time being. When they got home he would do a more thorough examination, and they were going to get home.
Virgil walked over, obviously not happy about the state he was in or about Logan telling him to be calm but he relaxed as Logan picked him up. There was something about being in the safety of a friend's embrace that relaxed Virgil's anxious thoughts.
"I understand you are probably worried about Roman and Patton, however, they are both strong and that is why they aren't in this cage with us." Logan was attempting to calm Virgil the best way he knew how, but it was apparently the wrong thing to say.
Once again his neko friend tensed as Remus laughed a high pitched laugh, almost a breathy giggle. His eyes were filled with chaos but Logan would not allow it to deter him. "You think so nerdy wolverine? Would you like me to show you where they are?"
Virgil froze, as did Logan. He hadn't expected that. Neither of them had. The two looked at each other and didn't need to share any words. "Yes." It was an almost immediate response, but Logan kept his voice stead. Beating Remus in hand to hand combat would be nearly impossible for him, but if he were out of this cage, he might be able to outsmart the demon. Scrambling to his feet, Logan held Virgil closer, "If you believe me to be wrong, prove it."
Remus clapped happily, flipping over and walking on his hands to the door before opening it up, picking the lock rather than using an actual key. "Oh I'm so excited to show you this, there was so much blood. Deci, you're coming too right?"
"Of course," He stood, making his way towards the door as well. For the past week Dante had been trying to convince Remus that it would be for his benefit if they created some chaos in this place, freeing all of the creatures here and burning the place to the ground. The problem was that Remus had issues focusing sometimes. He would get stuck on one topic and wouldn't drop it, which meant bringing up new topics was extremely difficult. Remus' current topic of interest had nothing to do with this place or the people in it.
"Did you all know angels could bleed? I didn't." His words were not helping Virgil's increasingly panicked state and Logan had to hold Virgil steady to make sure the cat didn't jump out of his arms and go running off.
"That is fascinating Remus, how did you find this out?" Calm, collected, pretend like it didn't matter.
"Oh, the man who runs this place, he likes to call himself sir, nothing else, just sir, anyway, he said that the cat had to be punished, and he would do so by hurting his friends. But what's the fun in that if he never sees it."
Virgil's claws sunk into Logan's arm and the human had to fight past the pain to keep Virgil from breaking down completely.
"You have a point, though maybe he knew you would end up bringing us to the others." Logan was taking a risk here. "Your need for chaos does make you a bit predictable." Though he didn't want to see Roman hurt either, he knew Roman could take the pain. Maybe it was just wishful thinking that made him believe Patton would be okay.
Remus froze, turning his head, and only his head, until he looked at Logan, breaking him out of his thoughts. "Predictable?" He asked, face furious, but then it snapped into a laugh. "You're so funny."
A sigh left Logan's lips when Remus began walking again. He had planted a seed of doubt in Remus' mind, hopefully it would be enough.
"Even if he is using me, I'm okay with being someone else's play thing." He leaned closer to Dante, "Though, I would prefer to be your plaything Double Dee."
Logan rolled his eyes, gently stroking Virgil's fur to try to calm him down. As long as Patton was alright they could overcome this. Patton had magic on his side and Virgil was very scrappy in a fight. The only reason Patton had been so keen on protecting him previously was because they were all afraid of something happening to Virgil. He had been gone for four years and they didn't want to lose him again. It seems that plan had not served them well.
"Here we are!" Remus pushed the door open to a large dark room. Virgil had never been here but he knew what it was. The small stage where magical creatures would be paraded across, a set of chairs for buyers to sit in, though there seemed to be a layer of dust that covered the room. This was the auction house and Logan could feel Virgil tense in his arms. The logical man had no idea was his friend was afraid of, but he was immediately on guard.
"Virge, is that you?" The voice was weak and soft. It was a voice Logan knew all too well, but it couldn't be true. Patton had to be okay. A spotlight flickered on from the back, lighting up the stage, and with it, two figures chained to the wall blood beneath their feet. Logan could feel the emotions surging into his head. He dropped Virgil, covering his own mouth with his hands as his body began to shake. He had to hold it back. He had to hold it back.
But he couldn't.
Everything crashed in on Logan all at once, everything he had been pushing back. All of the pain from losing Virgil, all of the self doubt from his fight with Patton, all of the anger from Virgil getting hurt a second time. All of his emotions flooded into him, stronger than before. He couldn't fight it, he was overwhelmed. Logan fell to his knees, hands clawing onto his mouth to prevent a scream. He didn't see Virgil shifting back, he didn't feel Dante offering him a comforting hand, he couldn't hear Patton's words of kindness and reassurance. Logan was just shaking, his mind and body in pain.
"I didn't expect the only human in your group to be this weak." There was the light sound of boots walking on concrete, a shadowed figure walking through the light down the middle aisle. "Though, it's good to know I don't have to touch him to break him. I would hate to go against the laws of our city." As he got closer Virgil stood, holding his arms up to try to protect Logan and Dante. Every muscle in his body was shaking but he stood strong.
Apparently, that was the wrong thing to do. The man pulled out a taser, holding it towards Virgil. "Heel monster," venom dripped in his voice, his eyes were filled with fury. Virgil flinched. He had been at the end of that device before, but protecting his family was more important than his own safety.
AN: Are you all doing okay after that? Did you need a cookie? *Passes out emotional support cookies* You still okay? Okay! Well, here's hoping things get better for our protagonists next week. I love all of you!
