~*~ Chapter 24 - A Dark Beginning ~*~

AN: Hey all, I know early author's notes are rare for me but I just want to warn you. This one is a bit shorter because things are going to get very dark very quickly from here on out. I promise that this story will have a happy ending but I wanted to warn you.

"Lasciate ogni speranza, voi ch'intrate." Logan read as they stood in front of a small mausoleum. They had spent the past few days traveling to Derasend and had tracked down the other memory orb. It was apparently tucked inside this tomb for a person who was long gone, though something about it didn't seem right to Logan.

"What does that mean?" Patton asked, holding tightly to Logan's arm.

"Abandon all hope ye who enter here," Virgil's voice had a hallowed silence to it as he looked over the words.

"Technically the more accurate translation is 'Abandon every hope, ye who enter here,' but that is how it is most often translated. I am impressed, how did you know that?"

"Dante's inferno was the only story I knew about as a kid." He frowned, his lips formed into a tight line. "Why... why can't..."

They all looked at him and he shook his head. "We are sticking to the plan. Logan is going to grab the orb as he is the only one without a magical connection and therefore this is probably the safest route. As soon as he has it we are getting out of here." The four of them were standing in a graveyard just as the sun rose, they looked incredibly suspicious, but what other choice did they have. This city was not kind to magic users.

"Virgil, I don't believe we will be able to stick to the plan."

Virgil turned to ask Logan why but he didn't have time. The yellow strands of magic rushed to return to their owner, longing to become whole once again.

'If you are going to be Virgil then I want to be Dante because you are my best friend' The memory rang through Virgil's ear like a shot fired in the distance. Dante, his best friend, his brother, his only companion in hell.

'Dante, what are you doing?'

'I'm sorry Virgil, but I don't want to be the reason that you can't escape.'

'Dante please stop,'

'I'm sorry Virge, I'm going to miss you so much.' He could see tears sliding down the snake's face but as a yellow light filled his vision, the snake and the memories were gone. There was an anger deep within Virgil like he had been abandoned, but he didn't know by what or who.

Virgil felt small and vulnerable. He had been so angry at Dante for abandoning him, but he had done the exact same thing as soon as he got the chance. He may not have known who Dante was at the time, but he had still hurt his brother. Virgil tried to push himself up, hoping that this time he hadn't been out for too long. It didn't seem like it because he could still smell the cemetery.

"He doesn't belong to you!"

"I think if you look at the brand on his leg, you'll find that you are wrong. He is my property." Virgil was snapped back into reality as he quickly looked around. He was in his cat form again, being held closely to Patton as Roman stood in front of them protectively. The man in front of them was one who haunted all of his dreams and nightmares.

Patton passed Virgil off to Logan, who took a step back towards the mausoleum. Logan wasn't a fighter and Patton probably didn't want Virgil involved in this fight, but he wasn't going to let the two of them fight alone.

"Virgil stop fighting, this is to protect us." Logan didn't like it either, but he trusted his partner. The pair flinched at every noise outside, Virgil desperately wanting to run and fight. He needed to protect Roman, he needed to help Patton, but Logan's grip tightened and the human began to fall forward, still clutching Virgil tightly in his arms.

"Look at that, two with one stone." A man from behind Virgil sneered, dragging Logan by the ankle towards a hidden passage. As he began to wiggle free Virgil felt himself picked up by the scruff of his neck and thrown into a small cage. "No, no, kitten. You can't escape. The boss wants you most of all."
