~*~ Chapter 23 - Meet Them Halfway ~*~
"Logan?" Patton asked bursting through the door, looking at his fiance sitting with Virgil on his lap.
"Ah... Patton, I assume you are here for Virgil." He went to stand, gently scooping up Virgil into his arms. Logan was trying to hide the tears that had carved streams down his face.
"No, no, I'm here for you Logie." Patton reached out, putting his hand on Logan's cheek and wiping away the tears. Sorrow showing on his face. He knew how fragile Logan could be, but he had still abandoned him. As Patton looked Logan over, Virgil figured this was his opportunity to get out of the room and let the two of them talk. He jumped onto the floor and made his way towards the door, leaving the two alone.
Logan was was intelligent, in fact, Virgil would not hesitate to say that Logan was the most intelligent person that he had ever met. On the other side of that coin, Logan didn't understand his own emotions. He locked them behind a mask of indifference, but he fell to sadness just as easy as the rest of them. Apparently more so if he had actually allowed himself to complete his experiment. Virgil was nervous about Logan's well being, but there was no one in the world other than Patton, that Virgil wanted to help his best friend. Patton was kind and compassionate, but he had made a mistake leaving Logan to deal with his emotions alone. Virgil could see the regret in Patton's eyes. He knew things would change for the better.
Once Virgil was out of the room he shifted back into his human form. He much preferred being at this size, being small made him feel vulnerable and weak. At least being human sized he had a bit more power. He stretched out his body, allowing his joints to pop back into place, before looking up. Roman was standing by the back door of their house, just waiting, a soft smile on his face.
"Are the two of them going to be okay?" He had never realized how much he missed his Roman, confident and noble Roman.
"I think so, it's not like they haven't had arguments before," Virgil leaned over and punched Roman in the arm gently. "But next time, don't leave the nerd on his own for so long. You know he is kind of an idiot when it comes to emotions."
"Yeah, sorry, I just didn't want to leave your side."
They both fell silent, maybe they also had some things they needed to talk about.
"Roman, I'm not a fragile little flower you have to protect."
"I know that, but it is my duty as a prince, an angel, and your soulmate to protect you. I feel like I have failed in that respect."
"Princey, it's not your job to protect me, no more than it is my job to protect you. Yeah, we should be looking out for each other but you can't blame yourself because I was too nervous to communicate and try to figure out how you all felt. Besides, it really is that snake's fault."
Roman didn't say anything but Virgil could see it in his eyes. He had something to say.
"What?" Virgil rolled his eyes, "After everything the snake did you still think he is redeemable."
"I... I just think," Roman took in a deep breath, "You are my darling storm cloud, a force of nature, and maybe, the lightning might be blinding you a bit." He was taking a risk, but they needed to communicate. "What Deceit did was wrong, it was, I will agree to that wholeheartedly, but he did what he could to try to find you, and now after some clarity, I realize he was devastated that he lost you a second time."
"He has you wrapped around his finger doesn't he?" Virgil had pulled away from Roman, staring him down. "I think it is frekin ridiculous that you would even possibly entertain that notion. A small amount of guilt cannot be where the bar is set."
"I'm not saying it is." Roman defended, trying not to raise his voice, "I'm saying that he showed many qualities that one might expect in a changed villain."
Virgil began to pace, trying to shake off this angry energy. "Roman, you don't get it, you don't know what happened to me while I was gone. What I had to go through, the things I endured because he felt the need to poke at all of my insecurities."
Roman reached out and gently grabbed Virgil's wrist. "Then tell me Kitten. Tell me what happened, help me understand, because it is you and I together, a united battlefront. Even when we disagree, I am on your side."
Virgil began to relax, his shoulders slumping as he closed his eyes. Tears began to slide down his face. "I went back to the market, Roman." He pulled his hand away from Roman's grip. "For two years, I was back in that hell."
"Wait, the place you escaped from before you found Patton?"
Slowly Virgil nodded, his ears pinned to his head. "Yeah, same place."
"Oh Virgil... I... We will find them. I know you didn't want to before but we need to take them down. We need to make sure you can find peace being out on your own again."
Virgil looked at Roman and nodded, slowly taking his hand. "You can't take them down Roman, you are one person and they are almost an army."
"Let me figure that out." He smirked, lacing his fingers with Virgil's. He wanted to hug Virgil, to pull him in closer and hold him tight but he knew Virgil probably wasn't ready for that. "Come on, let's cuddle and watch movies while I come up with a plan. I have five years of Disney movies that you have to watch."
Virgil couldn't help but let out a small laugh, leaning against Roman as the two of them walked into the house. Things weren't perfect, but they were at least moving in the right direction. Virgil knew he could trust his family, his found family. They were the people who had always been by his side and they would continue to be, but the fear was still there.
Roman, however, did not feel like they had resolved what they needed to. He still believed in Deceit and wanted to hear his side of the story, but like he promised, he and Virgil were a united front.
