~*~ Chapter 19 - Between a Rock and a Hard Place ~*~
"Who hides in an abandoned office building? There are so many open points of access, it's not very defensible."
"I don't know LoLo, they must like it because it has a lot of windows." Patton had a huge grin on his face as he looked over to Logan, still holding a tracking spell in his hand.
Logan looked over at Patton, staring at him for a while before shaking his head. "I love you." He wrapped his arm around Patton, pulling him closer before kissing his cheek.
The smile on Patton's face grew and Virgil couldn't help but roll his eyes. He was walking behind the two of them, Roman walking by his side as they followed Patton's lead. "Are the two of them always this gross?"
"How dare you besmirch such pure affection?" Roman teased, "Maybe you have not had enough to understand." He went to go hug Virgil but Virgil flinched away.
"Sorry," He said, trying to relax. The mood immediately changed.
"No, no, it's okay, there are things you aren't ready for." Roman smiled but it didn't reach his eyes. Virgil's flinch broke Roman. It had taken so long to break the walls that Virgil had built up the first time, and now those walls were there again, but this time, Virgil didn't even know what made up the walls around his heart. "You are my Chemically Imbalanced Romance, I'm willing to wait, as long as I can have you all to myself
Virgil blushed lightly but sighed. He didn't understand that nickname, but it probably had something to do with his missing memories. He didn't know how to respond. He wanted to harass Roman, to tease him and call him something back but his mind felt blank. An awkward silence fell between the four of them. Patton and Logan looked to each other and then back to the two awkwardly walking behind them. No one knew what to say to resolve the silence. Thankfully, the perfect distraction presented itself. "I think we found it." The orb in Patton's hand pointed to a pillar and as he walked around it in circles the indicator remained on the pillar.
"I think it's inside." He tried to keep his voice chipper but he was concerned about the placement.
"It would most likely be best if we did not attempt to take the orb out by force, this is a support beam, rather integral to the structure of the building. If we were to simply knock it down and get the orb that way, we would most likely bright the building down on us. Not to mention, we do not know of the structural properties of these memory orbs and whether or not it is possible to destroy them. It would be best if we found another way to access it." Logan quickly assessed the situation, trying to think of a way to get the orb out without damaging the pillar.
"Well, he had to have used magic to get it in there, padre, can you use your magic to get it out?"
"Maybe, but I don't know what kind of spell he used, and I've never manipulated concrete before. Logibear, what's concrete made out of?"
"Typically concrete is made of a mixture of Cement, Gravel, Sand, and water. Why?"
"Well, I know a spell that allows me to manipulate rock, which means, theoretically I could manipulate concrete with it right?"
"That is correct Patton," Logan was smiling with a bit of pride shining behind his eyes. "But you would still have to be very careful."
Patton nodded and began to work at the concrete but it didn't move at all. "I think he used an antimagic field around the pillar." Patton pouted. "Probably to be anti Me-gic."
All three of the others couldn't help but snort a little bit as they shook their heads at Patton, appreciating the small reprieve from a serious subject.
"How do we access it then?" Virgil asked, shuffling his feet on the floor.
"I have an idea, but... well, if I am correct, it could be very hard on you, Virgil."
"What no-" Patton started but Virgil interrupted him.
"What is it?"
"The memories are drawn to you because they are yours. We have seen this evidenced by what has been happening the past few days. Magic is strange and is typically not bound by the laws of matter. Therefore, If you were to put your hand on the concrete at the precise level where the orb is, and focus on calling the memories back to you, actively attempting to get them, the magic might be able to pull itself to you instead. I believe this could potentially be the structurally safest way to handle this situation, but we are unsure what will happen if you pull all of your memories back at once."
"But if Virgil does, couldn't that be really dangerous? Just a few of his memories have caused really bad attacks. What if all of them at once hurts him further?" Patton eyed Logan frantically, trying to convince him this was a bad idea.
"Yes, it could be dangerous, but I am at a loss as to what else we can try if your magic is not working on this."
"I'm not letting that snake keep my memories from me." Without discussing it further, Virgil reached out and touched the pillar.
"Virgil no!" Patton reached out but it was too late. The golden threads came out of the pillar, circling Virgil for a moment before all attacking him like angry snakes. Each one dove at him. Wiggling into his heart as they attempted to join back to their host. Virgil's eyes were blank. The memories were coming in too fast. He couldn't process them all. He looked to Roman.
Though no words left his mouth, his lips curled in a way that begged for help. Before he could hit the ground Patton had caught Virgil in his arms, looking up at Logan with tear-stained eyes. "What do we do? What did we do?"
"I think it's best we get him back home. He will need time to process all of this but I do not believe that this will harm him long term." Logan hoped he was right, he hoped that Virgil would be able to process through all of his memories and that this would be an event that would fade from them in time. He desperately hoped that this was not the beginning of them losing Virgil once again.
