003 - Enormity
Third person's pov ig.
—
Levi watched in amusement as his kids trained balancing their maneuver gears on vacant training fields, sipping on his coffee with his free hand position on his hip.
A week ago after Sabo's shenanigan of running away from home which had failed, the shiganshina district had fallen victim to titans, as well as Wall Maria.
Levi knew he will be seeing his children join the trainee corps and join the scouts regiment next year. And so out of protective instincts, the man had instructed them harsh training to improve their strength and agility.
Even going as far as to ask his squad to train his children in order for them to refine their skills.
Despite his squad protesting and even contemplating on giving the children dubbed as "Levi's kids" cruel training, the said kids themselves doesn't seem to complain even once about it. And thankfully, they improved.
But it seems, with physical attacks, his children have already gotten that covered.
Now, here he is, standing at the side as he supervises them with their training. They are currently trying to determine their aptitude on the ropes if they would be using maneuver gears soon.
Koby surprisingly, was the first to be able to balance himself. He was just ten, a fucking ten year old boy who grew up to Levi's height level.
And he perfected his balance.
The second one, was Law.
Sabo? Obnoxious as ever.
He was struggling balancing on his ropes, he was too motivated it actually irritated Levi. But later on, as the sun sets, Sabo had finally balanced himself after immense focus and a few helpful tips from Koby.
The man decided to call it a day despite the protests of the boys from behind. It was clear they wanted to train even further.
So Levi did what he had to do.
Send them out to train on the titan-free forests to practice using the actual maneuver gears at night.
At first, Sabo complained like the rebellious brat he usually is, which was a stupid move — leading up to Levi extending their training hours.
"Do as I told you. It'll help you maneuver better and for you to anticipate the approaching titans around you."
Was what Levi had told him, which was relayed to the other two. Though his words seem to have shut the blonde up, and they were off.
.
Months went by so quickly, and the kids were finally allowed to accompany Levi on expeditions under a heavy condition that they should stick to the captain's squad at all times.
Levi, despite his trust in his kids, doesn't fully believe that they will be fine on their own as a trio going north.
However, during their expedition, the trio disappeared from their sight and not even Levi couldn't have the time to panic as he was solely focused on killing titans, using his infamous spins and went slicing up their napes brutally.
His heart pounded in anticipation as the scouts all started to regroup in the fields close to the gates.
His children fucking survived. Except, there were major changes in their expressions and demeanors.
Koby seemed to be traumatized if the sight of the obvious red bags under his eyes, his frown and that Law was carrying him in his arms like a pillow wasn't obvious enough.
Sabo.. The change was evident in him. His usual cheerful and bratty behaviour seemed to have dissipated from his demeanor. He was enraged, horribly so.
Law? If his expression doesn't seem to scream that he is devoid of feelings then Levi doesn't know what to call it anymore.
His kids had grown up.
Levi failed to protect them.
His children survived from dangers. At what cost? The loss of their innocence as children.
—
The three of them had changed a lot. That however, did not stop them from wanting to come along for another upcoming expedition with their father figure.
They were feigning that they were fine.
Their third expedition however was their final expedition they had with Levi. Soon enough, they had to cut their connections with the survey corps knowing Keith doesn't play favorites.
Just when the 104th trainee corps is just around the corner, Koby's growth spurt had drastically changed. He was now as tall as Sabo, but his features were unexpectedly feminine.
It doesn't help that his pink hair had grown over to his neck that he always had to tie it up with a bandana Levi had gifted him for his birthday so it doesn't get in the way to distract him.
.
Normally, Sabo and Koby wouldn't be allowed to enter due to their requirement age. Even Levi had suggested to wait until they were in their respective ages to apply.
However, the three of them, rebellious as ever, did not stop them from being the trio they are.
Law succeedingly made sure the two were allowed to enter without any consequences by simply asking Keith Shadis, the man who'd be the Head Instructor of the 104th Trainee Camp.
And so, there they were, standing along with other cadets, forming couple of rows and columns as the instructor began to yell.
"Who are you!?" Shadis demands the blonde in front of him, who was standing coincidentally next to Koby. "Armin Arlert from Shiganshima District sir!"
"I see! That's a ridiculous name! Did your parents give it to you?!"
"My grandfather did, sir!"
Shadis bent down with an intimidating look in his eyes as he continued.
"Arlert! Why are you here?!"
Trying his best not to seem intimidated — which he is failing miserably at, Armin answers with a loud tone bravely.
"To help humanity achieve victory!"
"That's wonderful to hear! You shall serve as bait for the titans!" Shadis hollers, before leaning back and grabbing Armin by the head and turned him around. "Third row, about-face!"
Koby snorted, catching Shadis's attention and even the rest of the cadets around him. However, the instructor only gave him a threatening glare before moving onto the other cadets.
Even the rest of the cadets had been surprised by what happened.
But eventually after sending off Sasha Braus to run around the camp, he returned to Koby's front with a harsher look.
"You! Who are you?!"
With a proud display of his salute, Koby huffs out his response.
"Koby, from Trost District, sir!"
Armin glanced his way curiously, knowing he had seen Koby somewhere but couldn't connect the dots and find out what exactly. Eren and Mikasa also spared the pinkette their glances, with the same thoughts as Armin.
Shadis paused. He could've let out a dry laugh right then and there, this boy was the youngest yet the bravest out of all of these cadets.
Other than Law and Sabo.
"I see, what are your intentions, Koby!?" Shadis continued, glaring holes at Koby for absolutely no reason, who did not budge even the slightest.
"To join the scout regiment and clear out every single titan so I can see the ocean!"
Armin gaped at Koby's way. The rest of the cadets that had heard of the pinkette's intention had widened their eyes in surprise.
To see someone openly admit about joining the Scout Regiment..
From the back row, a blonde with curled tips of his hair and a nasty healed scar over his left eye lets out a mischievous grin. "Oh dear, Koby's getting reprimanded on the first day huh?"
"Keep talking if you want to be next."
"Tch." Sabo crossed his arms.
.
Most of everyone, minus the trio and the others had gathered around Eren's table to ask multiple questions about titans and about the colossal titan.
Law was unfazed as he ate his intake of meal, cutting his entire bread into half, he gave each of them away to both Sabo and Koby.
Instead, the three of them were rather engrossed in their own conversation.
"And then, Law had to cut up Sonny's belly for Hange-san that night!" Koby finished with a gulp of water from his cup.
Sabo coughed and stuck out his tongue. "What the fuck!? Yuck!" Sabo retorts, before glancing at Law in disbelief who continued to savor his soup. "And you can still eat after that?! You goddamn maniac!"
Law could only smirk in response. "Perhaps you'd want further details of what a titan's stomach is like?"
"No thanks you deranged bastard! I've lost my appetite thanks to you!"
Koby laughs, bread in hand, unaware of the gazes of the rest of the cadets that had finished talking, and mainly Eren and Jean.
Armin was about to approach them, but the bells rang, indicating the finish for dinnertime and most of everyone stood up to drag their plates to the sinks.
The next day was a test to determine their aptitude — once again for Law, Sabo and Koby.
Having trained early has it's perks. These trio had their respective 3d maneuver gears next to each other, and everyone was perplexed to see them balanced perfectly.
Koby was halfway high up. He seemed to be standing on air if not the obvious ropes over him. He was rather freaked out about his glasses falling off his head rather than losing balance over his maneuver gear.
Law, was in the middle, crossing his leg against his other with a crossed arm, eyeing Koby who was doing well, and then to Sabo.
Sabo was having fun with his maneuver gear as usual, and from everyone's perspective, he seemed to be sitting.
"Balance yourself, punk. You won't pass from that angle." Law began to instruct, causing Sabo to groan.
"What gives!? I can just shift back to whatever angle they want me to go with when they come to grade us."
"See you on the fields."
"Wait no!" Sabo retorts. At first, he seemed like he was about to lose his balance, only to hop back to the air and stand like Koby as if nothing happened.
Just in time for Shadis to walk over to find the trio balanced flawlessly on their maneuver gear.
While the instructor was unaware of the fact Levi had trained them personally, he was informed that these three had participated in scout expeditions three times in a row.
Since it was nothing new to them for balancing on their maneuver gear after all.
Not long, everyone slowly passes on their determination of their aptitudes.
Except for Eren.
Sunset has begun, Mikasa and Armin have gathered around Eren on his maneuver gear, giving him advice and what not to do before everything else.
Sabo unexpectedly approached them. "You guys are still here?"
Mikasa turned around to meet the blonde standing tall with a graceful posture, as if he was royalty or higher ranked noble who came from wall sina.
"Yes, unfortunately. We're just trying to help Eren practice his aptitude on the maneuver gear." Armin explained for them before his eyes lightened up.
"Hey, aren't you one of the three that had perfect balances on their gears?" The younger blonde asks with incredulity, and Sabo raises an eyebrow, before nodding slowly.
"Yes, that's me..?"
Armin's eyes glinted in eagerness, and Sabo somehow feels like he started to regret approaching the trio.
In conclusion, he was forced to hand out a few tips and tricks for Eren to work perfectly on his maneuver gear.
.
"Mind if we sit with you three?" Sabo asks with a grin as the boys, with the pinkette that held the same goal as both Eren and Armin, approached their table.
With a welcoming smile, Armin nodded vigorously, making way for two — Koby and Sabo to sit beside him, while Law was on the other side.
As usual, the older male cuts half of his bread and tosses it towards Sabo and Koby.
"Hi Armin-san! Do you remember me? We met a year ago, before the terror happened." Koby piques up, his gleaming eyes staring eagerly towards Armin in anticipation.
The blonde stared back at the pinkette, blinking slowly before memories came rushing into his veins like adrenaline.
Koby was the same boy who stood up against Armin's bullies. The same boy who was punched by his face but stood strong, until that facade crumbled down at the presence of the older—
Armin lets out a surprised gasp, pointing at the pinkette in disbelief. "You..! You're the boy from—..! I can't believe this, that was you!! The nine year old boy, wait WAIT!! How old are you!?"
"Eleven. Soon to turn twelve this year."
Armin gawked, Eren dropped his spoon, Mikasa eyed the pinkette and the rest of the cadets listening it turned to Koby with incredulity. "What!?" They all hollered in unison.
"Y—You, you got in the trainee at such a young age—" Armin stammers, which causes Koby to laugh and brush that topic off as if it wasn't that surprising.
Sabo grinned, and Law smirked proudly.
This was going to be a fun training camp for the trainees in the next three years, it seems.
-
Two days before the graduation, Sabo fell ill to a terrible fever.
Law was there to help him get better knowing he's a doctor through and through despite his amnesiac state.
But even a doctor as great as Law had gotten frantic because the blonde's fever wasn't going down at anytime.
Ever since Sabo's temperature were around 38°c, Law knew this wasn't just any fever. But the next day, it had gotten horribly worse. It was fucking 42°c! It wasn't normal at all! Sabo was dying, and Law couldn't do shit!
The day of their graduation however, Sabo miraculously got better. The moment he woke up, he was hit with a migraine and had to rest.
"Oh shit." Sabo cursed.
He had finally gotten his memories.
He wasn't an obnoxious brat who lives within the walls from the titans.
He was a grown man, a revolutionary leader, second in command who lost a brother and regained his memories after seeing Ace's death on the newspaper reports.
"Not again." He muttered, growing irritated. He just got amnesia, TWICE!
And it couldn't get any better that the other two who had anmesia was Trafalgar Law, a 28 yr. old pirate captain — as well as a doctor who allied with Luffy, and Koby, the youngest marine to have turned into a vice-admiral at the age of 18 — whom Sabo met on the battlefield and had slight attraction for the pinkette for admiring his little brother.
So the trio of them consists a Pirate, a Marine and a Revolutionary. Got it.
Regardless of his overthinking and resting, he pushed himself to get up and prepare for graduation day.
.
The top ten trainees of the training camp were listed from ten to one.
The instructors spoke with pride as they introduced the three regiments as soldiers;
They'd be able to choose, either Garrison Regiment; ones that are responsible to protect and reinforce the walls of each city.
Or Scout Regiment; ones that risks their lives and limbs to venture into titan territory outside of the walls in attempts to reclaim the lands.
Or lastly, the Military Police Regiment which serves under the king of Wall Sina, by policing the people and preserving the order.
They announced only the top ten aforementioned cadets are the only ones with privilege to make a choice to choose working for the Regiment in question or not.
And there, in the first row, stood said ten cadets with their backs hoisted and arms crossed behind.
From the tenth was Armin Arlert, that surprisingly was listed in the top ten. Well despite him being physically frail, his brains were tactical enough, being able to be of use within team cooperations.
Ninth on the list was Jean Kristein. He lacks the trait to be cooperative but his titan skills specifically his maneuver gear. He can be helpful enough.
Eighth was none other than Eren Jaeger, he is abrasive, but his goal set on killing titans was admirable, his determination converted into strength if logical enough considering he possesses twice the sense of purpose than everyone else. However, he still needs to improve in his teamwork with the others.
The seventh and sixth were Bertholdt Hoover and Reiner Braun. Those two are excellent, not only with their strength, but with their teamwork as a duo, they had each other's backs.
Fifth on the list was Annie Leonhart. She would slack off during sparring, but her strength and skills were top-notch, second to Mikasa Ackermann. However, her reclusive nature makes her a poor fit for team missions.
Fourth on the list was none other than Mikasa Ackermann. She was exceptionally strong in every area, proficient. It would've been suitable to say she's unmatched, whereas she has unprecedented talent.
However, cadets placed on the top three says otherwise.
Third on the list was Sabo. Albeit he was always bloodthirsty for violence against titans as his behaviour, but his skills were far than outstanding, some would say he inherited the Humanity's Strongest Soldier's extraordinary titan skills and often used Levi's infamous blade spins flawlessly.
In contrast to his enthusiastic demeanor, the blonde was shrewd and focused, devoid of anything usual about him and would only come to senses once he had cleared out the titans in front of him or one of his trio had snapped him out of his killing trance.
The second on the list was Koby. The boy's skills were remarkable for thirteen year old such as himself. Not just his slicing skills, but his physical strength against everyone during spars were unmatched next to Law.
He often strives to grow stronger, pushing himself further from his limits. That's probably why his punches as strong as a titan's grip tenfold and his senses are extraordinarily insane, as if he could've predicted everything around him before it could even happen.
Although, while he lacks aggression from slicing titan napes due to his trauma, he has exceptional leadership skills across the older two, even most of the cadets would follow in his lead because of his kindhearted nature.
Finally on the first and the very top, was none other than Law.
His slicing skills and in every area of his strength are unparalleled, graceful even. It was said his cuts were clean, balanced with aggression and grace. He could cut as many titan napes without using even a bit of gas.
He was the one who was said to be unmatched.
Some even rumored he could've surpass the Humanity's Strongest Soldier if he wanted to. And even the Military Police Regiment wanted to take him in instantly after his graduation.
But the top three cadets had already made up their minds on which regiment they are to choose. And the only ones who are aware of this are is just Shadis, who respected their decisions.
—
The next day, is another day for the main unit of the scout regiment to head for another expedition. The crowds were cheering on for them, and pointed at Captain Levi the moment he appeared.
"KICK THOSE BARBARIC NAKED ASSES, LEVIII!" A booming voice that belongs to none other than Sabo yelled across the crowd, catching the rest of the cadets and the civilians' attention around.
Levi took his time to glance back at where he had heard the voice. He spotted the familiar hair colors of his kids that ultimately stand out the most.
While the man seemed stoic and annoyed, he was inwardly smiling, his heart swelling in pride to see the kids he took in six years ago to have grown up to exceptionally great cadets.
As expected, regardless. They took after the best after all.
He missed seeing those brats. Ever since they had passed as trainees, the three of them had started living on their own alongside the other trainees and Levi had been living alone in their house.
Law grumbled in embarrassment while Koby chuckled nervously. "Please stop embarrassing yourself." He remarks, grumpily, and Armin grinned at the enthusiastic interaction between these boys.
Sabo laughed mockingly at the oldest, before glancing back to meet Levi's gaze that held fondness. "He's looking this way!" Sabo informed, and Koby was the first look back at their father figure with eagerness and the rest of them followed the pinkette's gazes.
Eren's smile grew wider the more he took in the appearance of the captain of the main scout regiment. He admired the every soldiers part of said regiment, specifically the one labeled as the Humanity's Strongest Soldier; Levi.
He would strive to train harder to be able fight alongside the greatest soldier of humanity.
"Law, Law! Lift me up please, hurry!!" Koby begged the eldest and Law complied, carrying Koby over his shoulders without a care for the world.
"Hey not fair, I want to carry Koby too!" Sabo exclaimed exasperatedly before jumping up to reach out for Koby's arms.
"Oi, Sabo-ya! You fucker— we're going to fall!" Law panicked, trying to keep his balance.
The trio's antics were as chaotic as ever. Those were the only times Levi cherished to see and would bask in the thoughts of seeing his kids running around the fields if they were in a world where they are in a safer place.
Unfortunately, this is the real world. And he cannot afford to be distracted.
Unbeknownst to him, his lips was threatening to twitch upwards. He looked away, his scowl returning but everyone annoyingly admired him for that.
"Brats." He remarked quietly, seeing from the corner of his eye that said brats have fallen to the ground.
Hange grinned beside him as they headed for the gates.
"The titans await outside.. Oooohh I wonder what kind we'll see this time!? I hope we can find some abnormal titans, that would be so great!"
Hange wiggled around their horse with an aroused behaviour, and Levi often finds that attitude nasty. "I would say there's already an abnormal here." The shorter captain remarked, expression stoic as ever.
This causes Hange to perk up with excitement, and the gleaming in their eyes says a lot. "What? Where!?"
Levi grabbed Hange by the hair and made them turn to face him.
"This one."
.
The trio separated however, Sabo was assigned at the vanguard of trost while Law and Koby were assigned at the rear guard.
After all, they wouldn't mind as long as they can return to one another. Once in their respective positions, the cadets assigned on the walls found themselves carrying boxes and preparing canons.
Sabo, who was supposed to be the most enthusiastic amongst the group, was sitting on a box, seriousness scrunched all over his face.
Lightning flashed behind them, and the colossal titan had appeared. As said titan destroys the entrance of the walls — massive enough to let mindless titans in, most cadets fall off the edges of the walls except for Sabo.
Whilst they were busy using their maneuver gears to hold on, Sabo huffed and adjusted his gloves. "Yo, Colossal Titan, fancy meeting you here. You don't look as intimidating as they said you are to be."
Sabo closed his eyes, his fingers separating and posed into a claw like gesture and to his perspective, it was quickly coated with black armor like skin. The blonde opens his eyes, followed by his lips to twitched upwards into a manical grin.
"You're going down, Bertholdt."
