part 3; chapter ten

You were put in a cell. You, Finn, Chewie, and Poe. You weren't able to stand next to them. Hux kept you right by his side as the stormtroopers forced the other three in a line. Three stormtroopers pointed blasters at the back of their necks.

"How does it feel?" Hux asked you. "To know that you have lost?"

You didn't answer him. You kept your eyes locked on Poe's, but he was having a hard time looking at you. This was his worst fear and you knew it. Now he was forced to live it.

"Fire on my command," Hux said, and you could hear the smile in his voice.

"Wait," you said. You swallowed hard and looked at the floor. "We both know that you're only interested in me. Why don't you just take care of them later?"

"I think this whole thing would be much more satisfying with them dying in front of you first," he said. You could feel his eyes rake over you, taking in your appearance. How much different did you look to him? He didn't look any different at all to you, but you felt like you might look like a new person. "I can see that they mean a lot to you now. How ironic is this? You escape with FN-2187 and rescue the pilot, and then you all end up in the exact same position --- and at the mercy of the First Order. At the mercy of me---"

He stopped, and you looked into his eyes slowly. You knew what he had just seen. From your wrists that were locked together, he could see your finger, and the ring that was on it. You swallowed hard as his eyes flickered from that to the jacket that you wore; the same jacket that once belonged to the pilot. The one he wore on the day he was taken into custody and interrogated for the map of Luke Skywalker.

"Oh," he said, and he swallowed hard to compose himself. "Oh, I see. The pilot and you, is that correct?" You didn't answer, but your eyes gave it away. "Perhaps he should die first then. Or maybe you should watch him go last, and we'll make it slower than we do for the other two."

You glared at Hux. "I knew I should've killed you when I left. My weakness was being too soft to be brave enough to finish the job."

Anger flashed in his eyes. He grabbed you by the throat with his left hand. His thumb pressed into the center and you cried out in pain. Poe moved toward you, but the stormtroopers behind him dragged him back by his shoulders.

"Look at that," Hux said, "he's even coming to your rescue. It's sad. A futile attempt."

"What do you want from me, Hux?" you asked, voice calm despite the pressure your throat.

"What do I want?" he asked. He leaned in close to you. His hot breath washed across your face. "What I want is for you to feel even a fraction of the pain that I think you deserve. You betrayed the First Order. You betrayed me. You made me the laughing stock of the entire regime! I was humiliated. You left me without a future. Without power, without heirs!"

"All I was to was a way for you to make heirs!" you hissed, jerking away from his hand. He dropped it at once.

"I loved you," he spat.

"No," you said, shaking your head. "No, you didn't. Whatever you felt for me... it wasn't love."

All of a sudden, his hand was on the back of your head. His fingers gripped your hair tightly and he shoved you into the wall. You felt your forehead collide with it first. You winced in pain. At the force of his shove, his perfectly straight hair fell out of line. He grinned as you grunted in pain.

"No!" Poe said. "Just leave her alone!"

"Doesn't it just kill you, pilot?" he asked, venom in his voice. To his stormtroopers, he shouted, "Fire on my command!"

"No," you said, and you kicked behind you, catching him in the knee.

He fell forward as his leg snapped. You turned and kicked him in the face. Then the stormtroopers were pointing their guns at you. Poe and Finn and Chewie shoved into them. A gun was knocked from the hands of a stormtrooper and Hux, as he stood up clumsily, picked it up. He aimed it at you and everything stilled.  Blood poured from his nostrils. "You will die for what you have done! And they will die for their crimes as well. And honestly, I think I would like to kill them myself."

Poe looked at you, pained, and said, "___, I love you."

Tears slipped from your eyes. "I love you, too. So much."

Enraged, Hux grabbed you once again by under your arm. You yelped at the grip, feeling your skin pinch. He dragged you towards the door. "Leave the prisoners be! I will deal with them myself when I am finished beating her into a bloody pulp!"

"Leave her alone!" Poe screamed, and you heard the scuffle of stormtroopers holding him back from running after you.

Being torn from Poe was excruciating. You kept glancing over your shoulder, heart breaking at his pained face as Hux dragged you out by his iron grip on your arm.

"Stay safe," you pleaded Poe, prompting Hux to shove you out the door so hard that you fell to your knees. You winced as they collided with the floor. Hux wasted no time to grab you again and yank. You struggled to keep up with him.

"You're disgusting," he said, "revolting. You were a piece of work to begin with. Constantly stopping executions. Helping the stormtroopers that stepped out of line. Begging with us not to raise them from children anymore. Don't you know what you came from? This is your blood! I am your family!"

"No you are not!" you shouted, and he shoved you into the wall again. You fell on your side and pushed yourself up with your elbow. He stepped down hard on your shoulder. As your arm grinded against the hard floor, your felt it pop hard. He lifted his boot and you sat up, gripping the upper part of your arm and speaking from between clenched teeth, "You are nothing to me!"

He slapped you hard, grabbed you by your jaw, and forced his lips on yours. You wasted no time to jerk your forehead forward. You caught him in the forehead and nose. His blood covered part of your face as he jerked back, sputtering. He went to hit you again, but you ducked and swiped your leg. He fell on his side roughly with a grunt. You crawled on top of his body and started to slam your fist down on his face until he laid limp for a brief second.

Breathing heavily, you hissed, "You are nothing to me, First Order scum."

"Your father is dead," he reminded you. Blood dribbled out of his busted lip in a steady stream. As he spoke, he spat it all over the front of your shirt. "And according to anyone concerned with the First Order, you belong to me now."

"Fine," you said, digging your knee into the middle of his stomach, "but I don't listen to the First Order."

"Ah! One of my friends!"

Your head shot up and you got off of Hux. You saw C-3PO waddle forward, Chewie's belt draped over his shoulder and his weapon in his hands. Your eyes lit up. "C-3PO! BB-8! Oh buddy, am I glad you're here---"

BB-8 screeched in anger upon seeing Hux. He rolled forward and pulled out a metal rod. He zapped his leg harshly, making the man convulse. You took the gun from C-3PO and grabbed Hux by the back of his neck.

"You're going to get up and you're going to order them to let go," you said, "and if you listen to me, I might let you live."

"Who cares if you let me live or die?" he whispered.

"You might, if you knew the end that I have planned for you." BB-8 shocked him again and you grabbed him by the hair, the way he grabbed you. "Now stand up."

He did. You grabbed him underneath the arm and shoved him forward. As the doors of the cell opened, you stayed behind him, with your weapon pointed at the base of his throat.

"Release the prisoners," he said shakily.

"What, sir---"

"Release them---" But he didn't finish, because you pushed him forward on his hands and knees and shot all three of the stormtroopers. Poe's eyes lit up when he saw you standing there, concealed from the outside by the doors shutting behind you.

"Yes! That's my girl!" he cried out. You ran to him and let him out of his restraints. Then you let Finn out, then Chewie. And Poe in turn helped you out of yours. With your wrists freed, you grabbed Poe's face and just looked at him for a long moment while his hands held you the same way. His eyebrows came together in concern when he saw the blood all over your face. "What did he do to you?"

"Oh, the blood?" you asked. It was warm on your face. "He kissed me and I busted his face all up."

"He what?" He looked away from you and at the pathetic man on the ground. He took a step forward, but you grabbed his arm.

"Dameron, we have to go," you said. "We've been here too long. We're running out of time."

"Right," he said. He pointed at Hux. "I should kill you for touching her. I should kill you for---"

"Do it then!" hissed Hux.

"Not yet! We need him to let us get to the Falcon." You gave Chewie his weapon back and then took a blaster from the stormtrooper's corpse. "No more screwing around. Get up, Armitage."

"No," he spat.

Frustrated, you stomped over to him and grabbed the part of his sleeve under his arm. You yanked. "I said get up. You're getting us out of here whether you want to or not."

As he got up on his feet, he grinned at you. Blood stained his teeth. "I am the rebel spy, you know. I'm the rebel spy." You must've looked confused, because he continued on with. "All I wanted was a chance to drag you right back here so I can kill you myself. And now---"

While the news shocked you, you realized it made sense to a degree. The most important thing to your ex-fiance was his status. When you left him for the Resistance, it was a hard blow. There was no doubt in your mind that he lost a lot of respect because of you, so becoming the rebel spy wouldn't have made anything that much worse on him. "And it backfired on you, didn't it? You're not going to kill me, you're going to help me escape. Now get up."
