Poe stared at the holographic images in front of him. He leaned forward, shoulder brushing against Finn, who stared at Chewie with a bored expression.
"You ever gonna go?" he asked.
"He cannot beat us every time," Finn mumbled to him.
"He might," Poe said.
"How does he do it?"
"This guy right here?" Poe squinted his eyes. "'Cause he cheats."
Chewbacca, clearly offended, angrily growled.
"I'm kidding! You're not cheating!" he said quickly.
The ship began to beep loudly, regaining the attention of the three guys that were sitting around and playing games. Poe started to move right away, knowing that they had a mission to accomplish. There wasn't anymore time for games.
Chewbacca called out again loudly. Finn held a hand up. "Don't worry, we won't turn it off! Even though you'll just beat us again."
"He's cheating," Poe said.
"Oh, yeah. Definitely," Finn agreed.
The two hurriedly got to work. Poe took the pilot's seat, Chewie at his side. This was a common thing nowadays; Rey was always training with Leia. She was never in the Falcon anymore it seemed, and Poe had taken her place as pilot.
Now they had to retrieve some information about the First Order. Poe wasn't sure of what information it was for sure, only that it was from a spy in the Order.
As Finn gathered the information and programmed it into R2, a line of TIE-Fighters appeared in front of them. Poe's heart sank. "Finn! We're about to be cooked!"
Somewhere behind him, Finn called, "Almost there!
"I really don't want to get killed today..." he muttered underneath his breath, his foot tapping nervously.
"Poe, we got it!"
At once, Poe started to move. He turned the Falcon around and started taking off quickly, trying to lose the trails of TIE-Fighters that were right on their tail. But he crashed quickly and easily --- it was inevitable. He sucked at this.
Lights flashed red; there was now a lot of damage that they couldn't afford right now. Chewie scolded him as he always did.
"Sorry, sorry. I know!"
He quickly regained control of the ship and turned it fast. There were still dozens of TIE-Fighters following them. Finn had yet to take down a single one, and they were running out of chances to get out of here alive.
"Finn! You're supposed to be gettin' rid of those things."
"Got one!"
"How many are left?"
"Too many."
The odds weren't looking good, but then again, when did they look good? Poe was used to this feeling. He typically barely escaped death. This was what he was born to do, although now it felt much different to know that you could die at any given moment.
He didn't want to leave you. Ever. He knew that if anything happened to him, you would have your other friends at the Resistance, like Rey and even your mentor, Leia, but nonetheless, you would feel alone. People knew you, but not like Poe did. He was your partner, your best friend, your family.
"Gotta get home," he whispered to himself. He tightened his jaw and glared straight ahead at the wall of bright blue ice in front of them. "How thick do you think that ice wall is?"
Chewie made a sound of protest, but Poe had already made up his mind.
He had never lightspeed skipped before. It was an idea that you had proposed during a chase a few months back. You had done it once and it had nearly killed you and Poe, but if you hadn't, you would've died much faster. If it had saved his life once before, then it could save it again.
Maybe.
He jumped to lightspeed, then stopped. He was now on a planet that was incredibly dark, with red undertones across the sky. A fitting, creepy place to die, ironically.
"Poe!" Finn warned.
"I know, I know!" he said. The TIE-Fighters were still on their tail. He skipped again.
"What are you doing?" Finn was right behind Poe now.
"Lightspeed skipping."
"How do you know how to do that?"
"___," he said.
Finn blinked. "That --- that girl is crazy!"
"Yeah, but she's smart," Poe said. "If you want to live, you gotta trust me."
Chewbacca protested again.
Poe glared at him. "Yeah? Well, Rey's not here, is she?!"
He skipped again and again, and then they were on a green, empty planet. A huge looming monster bent forward, opening its gaping, oozing mouth. Poe swallowed hard when he saw the sharp teeth.
"Last jump," he said, and then he added, "maybe forever. Hold on!"
He sent the Falcon into lightspeed.

BB-8 rolled behind you, just at your ankles. You were breathing heavily, having trekked through the entire perimeter of the camp twice, just for something to do. You regretted not going with Poe, but he had begged you not to. The painful part of it was that he wanted Rey to go.
BB-8 chirped accusingly. You shook your head, immediately shutting him down by saying, "No, I never said that I was mad at Poe."
He replied with an attitude. You stopped walking, huffed, and turned to glare at him.
"I am not lying to you, and I do not appreciate you accusing me like this," you said. "I am not mad at him. I am just confused."
He repeated the final word you said.
Exhausted, you tore your bag off of your shoulder and sat down on the forest floor. You brushed your hair off your forehead which was sticky with sweat. BB-8 beeped sympathetically now, rolling slightly forward to bump your foot.
You smiled slightly and reached to nudge him with the back of your pointer finger, like you were caressing the cheek of a child. "I am not mad. It takes a lot for me to get mad at him."
He chirped.
"I know he loves me," you said. "I know he really wants me to prepare for physical battle so that I can protect myself from anyone who personally wants to hurt me, but... but I feel like if Rey is needed out there more than here, then I should be, too. He shouldn't do this alone."
"Oh, he isn't alone. And he does think you are just as needed as Rey."
You glanced through the trees. "General Organa---"
She smiled and walked up to you slowly, her dress trailing across the vines she stepped on. "You seem to forget, young lady, that you are a child of the First Order."
"It is something I'd rather forget," you admitted.
She nodded in understanding. "I am a daughter of Alderaan. My parents were known for their leadership and fairness. However, my blood is that of Anakin Skywalker. He may have been the most powerful Jedi that ever were, but he was also Lord Vader. He killed my adoptive parents and my birth mother. He nearly killed me, my brother, and my husband. He is one of the reasons my son is who he is. I know what it is like to hate where you have come from."
You nodded.
"At least you know," Rey said breathlessly. She hooked her staff back over her shoulder and squinted againt the sun to smile at you. "At least you know where you are."
Leia shook her head. "Now, Rey," she said. "Where you come from doesn't matter."
She nodded once and said, "Yes, Master." Then her gaze fell on you. "Dameron wants you to train in physical combat, does he?"
"He does."
"Let's do it," she said, nodding. "Grab your staff from your tent."
You went back to your quarters, which was a large tent with a thin mattress for a bed, a table made of an old metal crate, and a box of your belongings. You grabbed your staff from where it leaned against a post and then walked back out with Rey.
"Remember what I taught you already?" she asked.
"Yes. You know, I was an officer before I met you."
"I thought that was something you'd rather forget?" she asked teasingly. She took her place across from you. "I made you that staff so that you could practice with something other than a blaster. Now do you remember what I taught you?"
You gripped it tight. "You hold it like this."
"Yes." She nodded. "Now don't hold back."
"Wasn't planning on it," you said, but you smiled.
She lunged forward and so did you. Although this was serious, and the two of you were really trying to practice for the time when you had to fight the Order, you had fun with it. Rey was a good friend. And she was certainly hard to beat when it came to hand-to-hand combat.
You fell forward as she swung. The tip of her staff caught your forearm. You winced. It would definitely bruise.
You turned and swung, and she caught your hit with her staff. She gritted her teeth and pushed, and you pushed back, until you dropped your stance and turned to catch her in the leg. She fell back and you laughed a little.
"Don't get cocky," she warned, and she swung at you again.
You jumped back. "I'm not. I'm just having fun."
Rey took off, leaping towards the trees. She ran three steps up the bark and did a flip over you. You turned, surprised, and she swung her staff at you once. You backed up toward the tree.
"Jeez, Rey," you said breathlessly. "You're not kidding today, huh?"
Suddenly, her eyes blanked, and a look of fear crossed her face. She stepped forward again and again, her staff raised.
"Rey," you said, and then, more concerned, "Rey!"
She swung, barely missing your head by inches. She turned towards you again, tears streaming down her face.
"What is wrong with you?" you asked. BB-8 beeped in alarm, rolling up to you. You held out a hand, warning him to stay back as she ignited her lightsaber and stared somewhere past your head with blank eyes. "Rey!"
She swung the lightsaber, and you felt the heat of it spread across the top of your head, no doubt burning some of your hair. You fell on the ground and covered your head as the blade clashed with the bark of a tree. The tree fell down with a loud snap. BB-8 screamed as it fell on top of him.
"BB-8!" you shouted, getting onto your feet and sprinting towards him. You lifted the branch that was crushing him.
"BB-8, I am so sorry!" Rey was saying. "I-I don't know what had gotten into me."
"Were you having a vision?" you asked. "You couldn't see me anymore. I could tell."
She nodded, out of breath. "It was... it was something like that. Did I hurt you?"
"No," you told her. "I didn't get hurt."
She nodded again and put her hands on her knees. She looked sick all of a sudden. "I--- I'd better go."
"Rey," you said, frowning. "It's okay---"
"I'm going to go study in my quarters for now." She turned and walked off quickly.
BB-8 beeped. You glanced down at him and said, "Are you sure you're alright? Poe will have a fit if he finds out she dropped a tree on you. Maybe we'll say I did it. Think he can get mad at me if I was the one to drop a tree on you?"
He replied.
"What do you mean, yes?" you asked, slightly offended, but mostly amused.
Someone between the trees yelled out. You looked up in alert. It took a minute to realize that they were shouting, "The Falcon's back!"
You grinned. "He's home. Come on, BB-8!"
You got up and sprinted with BB-8 on your heels. Everyone else was doing the same, eager and excited to hear about what the spy had given them. This was the spark of hope everyone needed after a long, long few months of nothing but dead end missions and battles that were never won.
Once you got to the Falcon and you saw how damaged it was, you stopped. Smoke was pouring from the ship and flames were licking up the sides. You moved forward, BB-8 right behind you, beeping in concern.
"Poe?" you called out. You walked around the front of the ship, eyebrows pulled together in deep concern.
"It's all on fire," you heard him saying as you turned around the front of the Falcon. "Yeah, they whole thing. The whole thing is on fire."
You sighed out in relief. He looked completely unharmed. "Poe!"
He turned and his face changed from one of pure exhaustion to complete relief. "Hey, baby!"
You launched yourself in his arms and he caught you, his arms going around you. You felt safest here, when you knew that nothing could happen to him with you right in front of him.
"I'm so glad you're back safe." He put you back down and you took his face in your hands. "I missed you too much."
He raised his eyebrows. "I missed you, too."
"You missed me?" you asked, surprised. "That's weird. You seemed to leave without me so easily."
"Shut up," he said, trying not to laugh. "You know I cry twice every time I leave you."
"That is a bit of an exaggeration," you said. "Poe Dameron doesn't cry."
"Mhm, okay. So maybe I didn't. But I missed my girl." He lowered his head and kissed you. He sighed against your lips, his thumb stroking your cheek as he pulled back to look at you. "Remind me never to leave you behind again."
"Can do," you whispered, kissing him again.
He stopped kissing you as cold water dribbled from the sky and you moved to look at what was happening. They were spraying down the Falcon, putting out the flames. You looked up. "So... what happened?"
"I lightspeed skipped," he said softly. "Don't tell Rey. She'll kill you because it was your idea. Oh --- here she comes. Hey, Rey, we really could've used your help back there."
You turned, and there she was. "Poe. How did it go?"
"Really bad, actually," he said, nodding. "Really bad."
"Han's ship," she was saying, shaking her head. "It's on fire."
"What'd you do to our droid?" Poe was asking, gesturing to BB-8, who was scratched up.
"The Falcon is on fire," she said, "How is it on fire?"
Poe didn't answer. "The Falcon is in a lot better shape than he is."
"The droid isn't on fire."
"What's left of him isn't on fire!" he said.
"What happened?" she asked.
"No, you tell me first!"
You rolled your eyes. Rey smiled. "You know what you are? You're difficult. You're really... you're difficult. You're a difficult man."
"And you... you are..." He bit down on his lip and swallowed his words as she walked past him and straight into Finn's arms. He shook his head and bent down. "C'mere, BB-8. You okay, buddy?"
"He's okay," you said, kneeling beside both of them. "We were training and he got a bit scuffed up by the trees. Nothing serious happened."
Chewbacca piped in from behind you. Poe's face filled with dread and he stood up to see a fuming Rey.
"You lightspeed skipped?! Poe, the compressor is down!"
"I had to, okay?" He spread his arms and shrugged.
She shook her head. "The Falcon can't lightspeed skip."
"Actually, turns out, it can!" he said. He grabbed your hand and started to walk off.
"Poe." Rey was still following him. "What happened?"
"Bad news, that's what happened," he said.
"No spy?"
"No," Poe said, "there's a spy."
Exhausted, she threw her arms up into the air. "Did we make contact with the spy or not?"
Finn, finally able to interject, said, "There is a mole in the First Order that send out and they sent us a message."
BB-8 chirped. You glared at him. "Really? Now?"
"She... she what? I thought you said he just got scraped up!" Poe said to you angrily.
"It was an accident," you explained.
"Crushing him is an accident? He could've been killed. You were supposed to watch him! You know what?" He shook his head. "No. I'm not doing this with you. No---" He looked to Rey. "You dropped a tree on him!?"
Finn sighed, "Guys..."
"That's what happens when you stay here!" Poe said.
"You know I want to be out there," she argued.
"But you're not, are you? You're not. You're here training. For what? You're the best fighter we have. We need you. Out there, not here."
He pulled his hand from yours and stomped off down the path. Rey and Finn moved the other way, leaving just you and your droid to stand in the silence.
"Well," you said, looking down at him. "Now he's mad at me."
