part 1; chapter six

You stood behind Han Solo as he piloted the Falcon. You watched the whirl of the galaxy in front of you; a swirled tunnel of bright blue against deep black. It hurt your eyes; it made you dizzy. But you couldn't look away from it. You'd never traveled very far before, and suddenly you felt as if you could go anywhere in the universe.

But first, you had a job to do. You just hoped you could survive it.

"How are we getting in?" Finn asked.

"Their shields have a fractional refresh rate," Han explained. "Keeps anything traveling slower than lightspeed from getting through."

"We're making our landing approach at lightspeed?" Finn asked in disbelief.

Chewie growled and nodded.

"All right, Chewie, get ready," Han said.

You reached over and touched Finn's shoulder. He glanced at you and then you both fell back in your seats. You tightened your restraints and gripped the arm rests of the seat.

"And... now!"

The thrusters fired, and you felt your body rise up into the air. You pressed against your restraints, then fell back down. The ship was diving towards a cliffside of snowy rock.

"Han!" you yelled.

Chewie roared.

"I am pulling up!" Han shouted.

The ship tilted upward, reacting slow to the commands that the pilots were giving it. You barely scraped by the rocks and then dove straight into the pine trees. You felt each and every impact of them.

Chewie was roaring again, yelling at his friend to go higher.

"If I go any higher, they'll see us!" he said.

You finally burst through the trees and into a clearing. You held in a scream as the ship fell, hit the snow, and bounced off of it. You landed hard for the last time, skidding to a stop on the edge of a cliff.

Breathless, with your hair all around your face, you stared straight ahead. Your fingers slowly released the arm rests; they were tingling from how hard you'd been gripping your seat.

Han turned around. "Pretty smooth landing, eh?"

You blew your hair out of your face. "Actually, it's been the smoothest one I've been through today."

It was snowing hard as you ran with your group to the important part of the base. You regretted not stealing a jacket or something; it was far below freezing, and every gust of wind bit into your bare arms.

"The flooding tunnel is over that ridge," Finn said. "We'll get in that way."

"What was your job when you were based here?" Han asked.

"Sanitation," Finn said.

Han's face reflected disbelief. You wrapped your arms around yourself and shivered.

He grabbed the back of Finn's jacket and pulled him so he could see him. "Sanitation? Then how do you know how to disable the shields?"

"I don't," Finn said. "I'm just here to get Rey."

"People are counting on us! The galaxy is counting on us!"

"Solo, we'll figure it out," he said reassuringly. "We'll --- we'll use the Force!"

"That's not how the Force works!"

"Okay," you said, piping in. "In case you guys forgot, I am here. And I know how to disable the shields. Now please, let's get a move on before I freeze to death."

Han looked at you and nodded. Finn was already slipping off Poe's jacket as he spoke. He handed it to you and then turned away.

You put on Poe's jacket right away. It still smelled like he did, even though Finn had been wearing it all day. You felt much better with your bare arms covered. It was big on you, hanging down to the middle of your thighs.

Chewie growled. Han rolled his eyes. "Oh, really? You're cold?"

"Come on," Finn said, and the three of you followed him; eyes on the beam of light where the weapon was heating up, its target set on the Resistance base.

"Report," Hux commanded.

"Weapon charged in fifteen minutes, sir," the woman said.

He turned away and nodded. A bit of excitement bubbled up inside of him. If he somehow managed to pull this off, people would see him less as the failure that was betrayed and more as the general he was. He had something to prove to the Supreme Leader. First, he would destroy the Resistance, and then he would handle you.

"Hey!" the stormtrooper started, but Chewie fired right at his chest. He flew backwards.

You, Han, and Finn stepped inside, blasters out and ready. "The longer we're here, the less luck we're gonna have," Han said.

"I'll go put the shields down," you said. "You guys have to cover me while I get there."

"We're right behind you," Han said, and Finn nodded.

"You guys go the opposite way," you whispered.

"Why?" Finn asked.

"I don't know," you said, shaking your head. "I just... I have a feeling."

Finn nodded as if he understood what you meant, which surprised you --- not even you understood what you meant.

When you were walking down the hall, you saw the familiar metallic armor of Captain Phasma. Your breath hitched in your throat and you thought of hiding, but it was too late. She'd seen you.

"Officer ___," she said. "What a pleasant surprise."

"Where's General Hux?" you asked. It was the first thing you'd thought to ask.

"Overseeing the weapon," she said. "But I will inform him that I saw you and dragged you right to a cell, where you belong. Then you can wait for your proper punishment for---"

While she was speaking, Chewbacca approached her from behind. He jumped on top of her and with a grunt, she crumpled to the ground, furry Wookie arms wrapping themselves around her and rendering her incapable of reaching for her own weapon.

You told Chewie which room to drag her in, and he held her down while you went to disable the shields.

"You remember me?" Finn asked.

"FN-2187," she said.

"Not anymore," he said. "The name's Finn, and I'm in charge. I'm in charge now, Phasma. I'm in charge!"

"Relax," you said to Finn, typing away on the keyboard.

"Bring it down," Han said. "How's it coming, kid?"

"It's coming," you said. "We're almost there."

"You will die for this, Officer. You've gotten quite the attention for escaping with that prisoner and this traitor. I hope this will be worth it."

"You want me to blast that bucket off your head?" Finn asked. He knocked his blaster against her helmet. "Stop talking to her."

"You're making a big mistake," she said to you.

"I did it," you told them, and the machine chimed in response to the shields being lifted.

"Solo, if this works, we're not gonna have a lot of time to find Rey," Finn said.

"Don't worry, kid," he said. "We won't leave here without her."

"They're down," you said, turning away from the machine.

"You can't be so stupid as to think this will be easy," Phasma spoke. "My troops will storm this block and kill you all."

"I disagree," you said.

"What do we do with her?" Finn asked.

Han smirked. "Is there a garbage chute? A trash compactor?"

"Yeah, there is," Finn said, grinning.

* * *

"General, their shields are down!"

"Thank the Maker!"

Leia grinned. "Han did it! Send them in!"

"GIve Poe full authorization to attack!"

"Black Leader, go to sub-lights on your call."

Poe heard the voice in his ear as his ship whirled through lightspeed. "Roger, base. Red squad, Blue squad, take my lead."

"Dropping out of lightspeed."

Starkiller Base was bigger than anything he'd ever seen before, but he did not fear for even a moment. The shields were down; they had hope. Leia had always taught him that hope was all anyone needed.

Now he could only hope that you would get out of there before they blew this whole thing up.

"Almost in range!" Poe shouted. "Hit the target dead center. As many runs as we can get!"

"Approaching target."

They began firing straight at the weapon.

* * *

Hux ran towards the viewport with disbelief on his face. X-WINGS --- Resistance pilots --- were firing at their weapon. They had broken through the shields!

"Dispatch all squadrons!" he ordered over the shouts of, "Shields up! Shields up!"

"Yes, General."

Hux turned, and he couldn't hide it anymore. Terror broke through his features.

* * *

"All right, let's light it up!" Poe exclaimed.

"Ah, direct hit!"

"But no damage."

"Yeah, we gotta keep hitting it," Poe said. "Another bombing run. Remember, when the sun is gone, that weapon will be ready to fire. But as long as there's light, we got a chance."

BB-8 chirped loudly. Poe looked behind him and dread filled him.

"Guys," he said, seeing the fleet of TIE Fighters behind him. "We got a lot of company!"

They came from behind and in front of them; they fired their shots of green and Poe swerved again and again, firing when he could and taking out as many as he could manage.

"We got light," he whispered to himself. "We can do this."

* * *

Finn was leading still as you made your way silently through the Starkiller base. "We'll use the charges to blow through that blast door," he whispered. "I'll go in and draw fire, but I'm gonna need cover."

"You sure you're up for this?" Han asked.

"No," he whispered. "I'll go in and try to find Rey. The troopers will be on our tail. We have to be ready for that. There's an access tunnel that leads..."

Han's eyes were above Finn's head. He jerked his chin. You followed his gaze and squinted; climbing the wall, you saw a woman with sand-colored clothes, worn cloth draped over them.

"Why are you doing that?" Finn asked. "Why do you keep doing this? Hmm? I'm trying to come up with a plan."

You smiled. "Finn." You pointed behind him and he turned.

Finn approached the viewport and smiled as he saw Rey climbing up the wall.

"Come on," you said, grabbing Finn's hand. "Let's go get her."
