There is a wonderful adventure of living in the path of life if one thinks optimistically. We are all born, we live our lives, and eventually we pass away with time. We are attempting to shape our lives in this way. Everyone's life is different. Some people have a lot of problems in life, while others do not. Those who have never faced adversity in their lives have one perspective on life. Those that struggle in life have a different perspective. Life is frequently described as priceless since we only live once. The various ways in which people seek to save lives reveal this even more clearly.
Every day, doctors and scientists try to discover innovative treatments that will help people live longer lives. Life is full of both joys and disasters. The ups and downs of life are what they're called. Without them, life is just a never-ending war that can be won at any time. To overcome one's grief, it is necessary to find happiness in one's life. Only then does life appear to be lovely?
Death is something no one can escape from. It follows life as surely as night follows day, winter follows autumn or old age follows youth. People make preparations so that they won't suffer when winter comes. They prepare so they won't have to suffer in their old age. Yet how few people prepare for the even greater certainty of death!
Modern society has turned its gaze away from this most fundamental issue. For most people, death is something to be feared, to be dreaded, or it is seen as just the absence of life – blankness and void. Death has even come to be considered somehow "unnatural."
But some things never change.
Concepts like soulmates, which not even scientists have been able to decipher how, when and why is occurs, have evolved over the centuries.
Soulmates- the typical concept of acquiring a mark on any part of your body randomly one day, or night and you set out to find the person who possesses the very same mark at the very same spot to complete your soul, as if it's some sort of a puzzle.
But not everything is sunshine and roses.
There have been cases where one partner is not satisfied with his or her soulmate. There have been cases of infidelity which only increases over the years. There have been instances where the pitiful people have never met their soulmates. And to add a cherry on top, there are astonishing cases of a person having multiple soulmates, the Guinness Book of World Record holding a record of 23.
But soulmates isn't the only concept that exists.
"Mono and Probe" Seokjin whispered as he made sure to make an eye-contact with all the children sitting on the carpeted floor, who had their jaws wide open as they stared back with utmost curiosity and interest, "Another beautiful yet dark concept"
He further continued as he flipped the page to his very own written book, images clean and colorful, very expressive, "The concept is very vague you see, somewhat similar to soulmates. These people are extremely rare. Monos are people who lack something. Like clear vision, or the sense of touch. They could even lack even lack their ability to see colors. I'm sure you have all read about that famous manga that came out last summer, 'Color Rush' "
Jin smiled as he saw most of the teens nodding their heads as their eyes sparkled with interest.
"But" he paused, "There are also cases where Monos have been cursed." He whispered the last part to create a spooky ambience.
One boy spoke up, him wearing a button up check shirt with thick rimmed black glasses, "Cursed? As in like sleeping beauty?"
A few children giggled and mocked the child who shrunk down with embarrassment and Seokjin shushed them immediately, "No, he's right. Absolutely correct. I don't see a reason to laugh at him." Jin looked down at the boy and gave a gentle smile of encouragement, "You are correct kid. But there are various types of curses. And my book specifies on a single type."
"What is it Mr. Kim?" a 15-year old girl asked who wore baggy clothes but her nails were well manicured and maintained.
"The curse of death" Seokjin said slowly, making sure to punctuate each and every word and it greatly satisfied him to hear all the surprised gasps that echoed the room. Even the Mrs. Oh, the librarian inched closer to the circle even though she hated Jin's guts just because he was way more popular that she ever will be.
"Monos who have been cursed with death. Wherever they touch, any living being in contact is destined to die immediately." Jin flips the page to show a colorful drawing of a young boy, face crying, touching a plant that withers away into ashes, " This book is about a young boy, who one day, at the mere age of 10, finds out that he is a probe.
"The body withers away to ashes, as if the entity never existed."
"The probe! Did he meet his probe hyung? What does the probe give him?" Various curious voices chime in at the same time which made Jin feel giddy with happiness. He giggles, eyes crinkling with childish innocence even at the age of 30, " I'll answer your questions, calm down"
" What's the opposite of death? It's life! That means, when the mono meets his probe, he'll be able to touch living beings without them dying. Simple right?"
Most of nodded but that immediately turned into a frown when Jin clicked his tongue negative.
"Monos are known to be deadly. They are killers, they obsess and they possess. Just imagine. You were never able to see in your life and suddenly you can when you meet your probe. Now keep in mind, your probe has a life of his or her own. So when they're away, your vision is again snatched away. When one gets a glimpse of undeniable paradise and pleasure, we do everything in our will to achieve that. That's why there have been cases of kidnapping and murders of probes to remove the curse permanently. Life is not at all simple for monos and probes. It's a cat and mouse chase. Survival of the fittest"
The children whined when Seokjin closed his book and the lights to the library were turned on. Jin brushed away his wrinkles on his shirt as he stood up to face his over-interested audience.
"My book will be available in libraries from next week onwards. Be sure to read it. And I can already see your hype to read it. I love it!"
"Nice imagination you have there Seokjin ssi. Soulmates and all. In real life no such things exist yet you portrayed it so realistically. I'm impressed" The librarian said and Jin could vividly hear the sarcasm.
"Real or not, you'll never know Mrs.Oh. Maybe you never found your soulmate" Jin winked at her playfully to which she rolled her eyes and went away to her desk, grumbling under her breath about the nasty youth these days.
Seokjin greeted all the children personally and he shook their hands with a big smile on his face.
But just when he was about to leave the library, he felt a tiny tug on his shirt. Curiously turning around, he saw a young boy with an overall black outfit, his age hardly surpassing 13. He had his head hung down, as if he was calculating what he wanted to say " Mono and probe hyung. People don't believe it to be real, but" he gulped for a second and then he looked up and Jin couldn't help the gasp that escaped his mouth- the boy had one eye grey and the other black, "I do. Mono are real and so are probes"
Jin crouched down to his level and looked intently into the boy's eyes, voice extremely low so that no one could hear them, " You're a mono?"
"A probe hyung. I found my mono already. He can't see colors and I allow him to see it. And I'm thankful that my mono is my own little brother. But hyung? You are a mono aren't you?" Jin inhaled sharply as he watched the boy grab his hands as he curiously rubbed at the soft material of the gloves, " The book, it's about you?"
Jin huffed playfully, but the way he gulped nervously said otherwise. He stood up and patted the child's head, " You read way too many books kid. I hurt my hand and that's why I'm wearing gloves. And nice story you told me there, you almost had me" He flicked that cute button nose and the boy looked up at him unimpressed.
Jin thought the boy would finally break into a smile at his lie being caught but oh boy was he wrong. The kid kept his eyes firmly on Jin.
Clearing his throat awkwardly, Seokjin scratched his burning red ear, " I-I have t-to go to work. I'm a professor so umm yeah. See ya kid next Saturday" Seokjin literally fled from the library as if he had his tail on fire.
Whatever the boy said kept ringing inside his ears and it had become borderline painful. Jin kept on running like a madman, not caring that he bumped into people walking down the busy streets of Seoul.
Once he reached a park where there were no people in sight, he allowed himself to sit on a bench, his body tired from all the running.
Sweat dripped down his face and his heart refused to calm down. He shakily looked down at his trembling hands as he plucked his gloves out.
His hands, bony and crooked, pale as if it had never been exposed to the sunlight.
And it was painfully true.
Tears pooled in his eyes as he glanced to his side, a beautiful lonely small flower stood proudly on the ground. With shaking hands, he let his fingertips graze one of it's pink petals.
And that morning Jin laughed wetly, almost crazily, as he watched the flower wither away into black ash, as if it never existed in the first place.
Seokjin was a mono.
And he never wants to meet his probe.
