Chapter 9: Illness and One Day More

Disclaimer: I own Adaline, Árielle, Marié, Alec Javert, and Adaline and Enjolras's kids.

June 4th, 1832

Enjolras POV:

I woke up in the warm bed and rolled over. Opening my eyes a crack, I saw Adaline's side of the bed empty and could hear retching coming from the bathroom. I get out of bed and walk towards the bathroom, opening the door. There, I see Adaline hunching over the lavatory (A/N: another word for toilet) puking her guts up. I immediately go behind her and lift her beautiful hair out of her face so that vomit doesn't get in it. Adaline stays kneeling for a while, wiping her mouth with the back of her hand. She cleaned her mouth out with a rag, trying to make sure that she doesn't have morning breath.

"What happened?" I ask gently, trying to make sure that she isn't dying. That's what Joly would think if I brought her to him.

"I don't know. I just felt like I had to throw up urgently. Next thing I knew, I was hovering over here." She stands up and almost falls down again. I barely catch her, arms wrapping around her waist and keeping her safe. "Thanks," she whispers, hazel eyes staring into my blue. I sigh. She's not going to like what I have to say next.

"Adaline, please don't kill me for saying this, but I don't think you should fight at the barricade." Her face takes on an indignant look and I hurry my explanation on before she interrupts me. "You're sick. You can't possibly fight; what if you have another... episode on the battlefield?" I couldn't find another word for her vomiting except episode, so it will have to do. She looks up at me, eyes blazing with angry fire.

"Excuse me? I am part of les Amis and I will fight with them! You are going to be there and you are my husband!!"

"Exactly, I'm your husband! I am telling you that you won't be at the barricades!"

"I'm your wife! And as your wife, I am telling you that I will be fighting at your side!!"

"No, Adaline! There's a chance that you could die!" My throat blocks up and I swallow a couple of times, trying to get the lump out. My voice falters. "I love you."

"There's a chance you could die too," she retorts. "I love you too." I rest my head on hers, trying to contain the well of emotions rising within me. "That's why I must fight at the barricade with you."

I sigh and pull gently out of our hug, looking down at my beloved's face. "I'm going to regret this, aren't I?" She smirks at me.

"Probably not. But, if it makes you feel better, I'll stay with Gavroche and Árielle and keep them safe. However, if you are in trouble, I will go to your side and stay there." I nod my head. That's the best solution for both of us. Hopefully Gav doesn't get some crazy heroic idea in his head and tries to help us (A/N: *evil cackling from background*). Then Adaline would be in the line of fire. I pull her closer to me, trying to convince both of us that we will be okay. I take a deep breath and murmur to her.

"We probably should go to Café Musain. Everyone's probably waiting on us." I get dressed in a white shirt, red jacket, black pants, red belt, black boots, and a loose, black cravat. I wrapped my arm around Adaline and we started to walk towards the café. We finally reached the place where the barricades would be placed tomorrow, the place where France would finally receive freedom. I pull the door open and gesture for Adaline to walk in first. She does, kissing my cheek as she passes me. I walk in after her and jog up the steps towards our meeting room. I barge through the door and begin to sing commandingly.

"One more day before the storm"

Adaline POV:

Enjolras scares basically every boy in the room by his loud singing. "At the barricades of freedom"

I look around for Marius, who isn't there. I sigh. He's probably off finding Cosette or something. Wait... is that Éponine? In boy's clothes? I hurriedly walk over to her, keeping an eye on Enjolras. "Éponine!!" I hiss, "What are you doing here?"

"I couldn't let Marius just die; I'm in love with him." My head suddenly feels heavy and I stumble. "Adaline!" she cries softly so that we don't draw attention to ourselves.

"I'm fine, I'm fine," I quickly say. What's wrong with me? First I threw up for the past three days and now I'm dizzy? Enjolras continues to sing, more powerfully than ever.

"When our ranks begin to form
Will you take your place with me?
"

Everyone joins in, singing loudly, including Éponine and I.

"The time is now

The day is here!

One day to a new beginning
Raise the flag of freedom high
Every man will be a king
Every man will be a king
There's a new world for the winning
There's a new world to be won
Do you hear the people sing?
"

Then, I hear Marius's voice chiming in. Enjolras and I turn around, seeing Marius hoisting a maroon flag in the air. "My place is here; I fight with you!"

I take a deep breath as Enjolras, smirking, strides forwards and claps Marius on the back. Then, everyone in the Café starts to sing.

"Tomorrow we'll discover

What our God in Heaven has in store
One more dawn
One more day
One day more!!!

I jog over to Enjolras who sees me coming at him. He wraps me in a large hug as I grab onto his jacket, searching for something that tells me he is alright. I inhale, taking in his scent of cinnamon and gunpowder. We will win this revolution. We will.

Author's Note: AAAAAAHHHHHH!!! We're getting to the barricades! This isn't good at all... I'm nervous and I'm the one writing it! Comment who you want saved in the barricades and I might make it happen. Vive la France!
