Chapter 5: Joyeux Noël!!

Disclaimer: I only own Alec Javert, Marié, and Adaline. It has been roughly 8 months since the last chapter. Enjolras has taken Adaline into his home and Gavroche alternates between staying with Courfeyrac and Enjolras and Adaline. Enjolras and Adaline have transitioned into sharing a bed. Awww.

December 25th, 1831

Enjolras POV:

I lay in bed as I watch Adaline sleep. Her face is peaceful, and she seems to be dreaming of good things. I love her so much that I'm planning on proposing to her today, on Christmas. Adaline's lips part slightly, causing me to smile gently at her. I hear Gavroche waking up. I quickly get out of bed and open the door before Gavroche barges in and wakes up Adaline.

I walk into Gavroche's room. "Hey, Gav."

"Hi, Enjolras!! It's Christmas!!" he says, a little too loudly in my opinion.

"Shhh, Adaline's sleeping," I whisper to him.

"Well, then we need to wake her up!!" he exclaims and runs under my arms. I turn abruptly and quickly start to jog towards our room.

"Gavroche!" I whisper-shout. He ignores me. Well, he is a kid and it's Christmas. There's really nothing I can do to contain his energy.

"ADALINE!!! Wake up, wake up!!" he shouts. Adaline's dark brown hair shines in the light from the open door. She groans.

"Five more minutes!" I smirk and bite down a laugh.

"No! It's time for Christmas!!" Gavroche says while dancing on the bed. He's hilarious.

"If you wake up, you get a good-morning kiss!!" I comment while smiling. Adaline jolts up.

"I'm waiting..." she says, grinning at me.

"Well, if the lady says so, I can't resist." I walk over to our bed and she sits up, meeting me halfway. My lips touch her soft ones and I shift into euphoric bliss. Gavroche somehow gets between us and pushes us apart. Adaline looks at him in mock anger and picks him up.

"Please no tickles!" Gavroche shouts. Adaline starts to dance her hands up and down Gavroche's ribcage, tickling him. Gavroche, amidst gales of laughter, shouts for me to help him. "Enjolras!!" I leap onto the bed and start to pepper Adaline's face with kisses. She starts to laugh, her hands ceasing their tickling. "We need to get to the café!! Everyone's probably waiting for us!" Adaline gets out of bed and gets dressed in a warm dress. I grab another one of my red jackets and hand it to Adaline. We walk outside, admiring the white snow drifting down from the sky. I pull Adaline closer to me, making her warmer. We walk all the way down to Café Musain, Gavroche sprinting ahead of us.

Adaline POV:

Enjolras and I walk into the café a full ten seconds after Gavroche charges through the doors. "Joyeux Noël, Madame Houcheloup!!" I say to the owner of the café as we walk in.

"Joyeux Noël, Adaline and Enjolras! Hopefully you like your presents." She winks at Enjolras, who blushes and glares at her. We go up the stairs to the meeting room and see Gavroche sitting next to Courfeyrac.

"Bonjour!!" Enjolras and I shout as we enter. We see a pile of small presents sitting near our makeshift tree.

Gavroche runs up to us. "Everyone's here! Could we open presents now?" He busts out his puppy-dog eyes that I can't resist. I nod my head and sit on top of Enjolras's desk. Enjolras stands behind me, arms wrapped around my waist and head on my shoulder. Gavroche runs over to the tree and starts to transfer presents to each recipient. He's the one-man delivery system. He runs up to me and drops a small box in my lap. I feel Enjolras swallow nervously. I wonder why. Enjolras's arms vanish from around my waist and then I see him in front of me. His blonde curls are just messy enough as to where it looks windswept. He motions to me to open the box. I undo the ribbon and see a jewelry box. Enjolras gently takes it from me and I can see all of the other barricade boys are staring at us in shock. Enjolras goes down on one knee and opens the box.

"Adaline, you are the sunshine in my life and the reason I go to bed happy each night. Even though we are planning a revolution that could end badly, I know that everything will be all right if you are by my side. When I first met you, I saw a beautiful, caring, young woman. I know you are the only one I would want to share the rest of my life with. Mademoiselle Adaline, would you become Madame Adaline and marry me?" I gasp, mouth wide open in shock. I nod my head, tears streaming down my face.

"Yes!" I exclaim. Enjolras lets out a breath of relief and stands up, putting the ring on my finger.

He picks me up and twirls me around. I laugh as I spin in the air, seeing blurs of the barricade boys whirling by me. Enjolras sets me down gently and kisses me lightly. I bring my hands up to his golden-blonde curls and run my fingers through the silky tresses. His hands go to the small of my back. I vaguely hear claps and cheers coming from all of the boys watching us. We part lips but are still in the embrace. I smile widly up at Enjolras, who smiles back at me. It's the biggest smile I've ever seen from him.

"Madame Houcheloup knew, right?" I question him, still smiling.

"How'd you guess? The wink or the mention of your present?" He says sarcastically with a smirk on his face.

"Both." I turn around to see all of the barricade boys cheering and hollering. Gavroche maneuvers his way up to us and gives me a great hug.

"Congratulations!!" he shouts. He then goes up to Enjolras and gives him a hug, too. Enjolras gives Gavroche a hug back. Gavroche releases Enjolras from the famous Gavroche Hug. Everyone starts to shower congratulations on us. We resume our seats, me sitting in Enjolras's lap now. We unwrap the rest of our presents. The engagement ring is, of course, the best present I got this year. Maybe the best present I got in my whole life. It probably is. Gavroche got a winter coat from Enjolras and me so that he stays warm. My parents don't know that I've met with Marié and she gave me some of my parents' money to help pay for the coat. Gavroche thanks Enjolras and me. Enjolras got a new red jacket from me, one that he put on immediately. Every other barricade boy started to laugh. Red's his trademark. Enjolras kisses me on the cheek and I smile up at him. I lean back gently into his chest, looking at all of the other boys. And Éponine. She's here too because Gavroche is her brother.

"Je t'aime, mon amour," Enjolras whispers gently into my ear (A/N: je t'aime = I love you; aussi = too).

"Je t'aime aussi," I reply, shifting in my seat so that I can reach my arm up around his neck. He tilts his head down and we kiss for the third time today. I smile into the kiss, lips curving around Enjolras's. We part seconds later and I turn back around, Enjolras's arms finding their way around my waist. He does that a lot.

"Thank you for saying yes," he murmurs.

"Why wouldn't I?" I mutter back. "I love you and only you. You are my one true love."

"And you are my one true love."

Author's Note: I'm writing this on November 28th, 2020. It's not Christmas, but I thought Enjolras would propose on a special day. I have plans for the barricades, so they're getting married in May with Gavroche as the ring bearer. Awwww. Just imagine little Gav in a small black suit. I have been having the first rally song stuck in my head for the past week and my brother is furious. He doesn't like Les Miserables, so I say, "Vive la France!!" to him. :)
