Chapter 18: Back to the Convent
Disclaimer: I don't own Les Mis. Again.
June 7th, 1832
Third Person POV:
A silence overtakes the carriage going back to the Petit Picpus convent a few minutes later, Adaline and Enjolras taking strength and happiness from the other's mere presence. Gavroche frowns, feeling a bit awkward from the quietness.
"So those were your parents?" he asks Enjolras, who just sighs.
"Yeah. What did you think?"
"They're right gits," Gav replies promptly, causing Adaline to force down a laugh. "Well, your dad is. Not your mom. She's pretty nice. What do you think, Ari?"
"I agree with you, Gav," Ariellé says softly. "Your dad's tall."
"And that's where I get my height from," Enjolras casually responds. Adaline leans over to Enjolras to whisper softly in his ear.
"Your dad's an a**hole," she mutters to her husband, keeping her voice quiet so the children can't overhear her. Enjolras snorts softly, agreeing. The two couples, even though Gavroche and Ariellé don't recognize their feelings yet, revert back into a more peaceful silence.
~at the convent~
Opening the door to the carriage, Adaline steps out onto the soft green grass, Enjolras at first nervous she'd trip and either hurt herself or the baby. "So what should we do now?" she ponders to herself. Then, one of the incredibly hospitable nuns walks briskly up to the foursome, sharing important news.
"The other man is awake," she informs Adaline and Enjolras, who look at each other and then back at the nun.
"Do you know where he is?" Enjolras questions the older woman.
"Third door on your left," the woman directs them, pointing the way they're supposed to go.
"Thank you," Adaline smiles softly at the woman, who leaves shortly after smiling at her as well. "Are we going to see Marius now?" Adaline questions Enjolras, who thinks about the question posed to him.
"We probably should," he responds, and they make their way towards Marius's room. Opening the door a crack, Adaline peers in, just to make sure they don't disrupt Marius's sleep.
"Marius?" she says quietly.
"Adaline? Enjolras?" the man in question responds confused.
"Oi, what about me and Ari?" Gav responds, indignant.
"Ari and me, Gav," Adaline corrects gently as Gav sighs, exasperated.
"Ookay, Ari and me then."
"How are you here??" Marius asks, shocked.
"We took a carriage," Enjolras responds dryly as Adaline elbows him. "Ouch," he mumbles under his breath.
"Uhh we survived the barricades," Adaline answers as if a question. "Not really sure how all five of us did, but it's the grace of God for sure." Everyone agrees, whether out loud or inside their minds, and they smile at each other. Except Enjolras, who kind of smirks but less harshly. Adaline yawns softly. "Sorry Marius, but I think we have to go..."
"Okay. Bye Adaline, bye Enjolras, bye Gavroche, and bye Ariellé," Marius says, waving as much as he can with a sling. The four aforementioned people leave the room quietly, going back to theirs.
"I'm glad Marius is alright," Adaline tells Enjolras softly. "I saw him get shot." Enjolras sighs.
"I did too. It was so chaotic back there that it felt like every time you turned around there was another National Guard member there."
"Yeah," Adaline says nearly noiselessly, remembering the barricades. Enjolras studies her face for a second before pulling her into his embrace, his arms encircling her and putting a light smile on her face. Adaline hugs him back, his body basically dwarfing hers. "I love you," she murmurs.
"And I you," Enjolras reassures. "But we probably should get in bed. I think it's late."
"We probably should; you're right," Adaline accepts, already leading the children to their rooms. "Sleep well, Gav and Ari." The children yawn in unison and smile at Adaline, who smiles back.
Mere hours later, all four occupants of the room are asleep, dreaming of happiness, light, and freedom (that last one mostly from Enjolras).
