Chapter 13: Drink With Me
Disclaimer: I own Alec Javert, Adaline, Marié, Árielle, and Adaline+Enjolras's kids if they have any.
June 5th, 1832
Adaline POV:
Enjolras begins to command the students, getting everyone to hunker down for the night.
"Courfeyrac, you take the watch
They may attack before it's light
Everybody keep the faith
For certain as our banner flies
We are not alone
The people too must riseMarius, rest." Marius has, up till now, been fixing the barricade and adding more tables to it, patching up each and every hole. Enjolras walks over to me and sits down next to me, arm wrapping around my shoulders and pulling me closer.
I hear the first line of a song, Grantaire's voice carrying through the quiet din of conversation. "Drink with me to days gone by"
Gavroche and Árielle echo every Ami, counting myself and Enjolras as we sing on. "To the life (to the life) that used (thats used) to be (to be)
At the shrine of friendship never say die
Let the wine of friendship never run dry
Here's to you (here's to you) and here's (and here's) to me (to me)"
I sigh as Grantaire continues to sing, making Enjolras even more angry at him.
"Can it be you fear to die?
Will the world remember you when you fall?
Could it be your death means nothing at all?
Is your life just one more life?"
Then, I hear Marius singing a completely different song to the one we're singing now.
"Do I care if I should die now she goes across the sea?
Life without Cosette means nothing at all
Would you weep Cosette if I were to fall?
Will you weep Cosette for me?"
I stand up, furious, and walk over to Marius. "HOW DARE YOU?? ÉPONINE JUST DIED, AND HERE YOU ARE SINGING ABOUT YOUR LOVE?? YOU DAFT OBLIVIOUS TWAT, DID YOU EVER NOTICE THAT ÉPONINE LOVED YOU?" I punctuate each word of 'daft oblivious twat' with a jab to his chest. I hear Enjolras jump up and run over to us, pulling me back softly. His arms wrap around me and pull him into his chest, whispering words of love in my ear. I slowly start to calm down but don't apologize. Every word of what I just said was true; I just didn't want to say it in that tone. Enjolras guides me over to the barricade so that we could fall asleep. Enjolras sits down, back against the barricade and legs spread out. I sit on his lap and lean back until my back is against his chest, his arm around me protecting me even in sleep. Gavroche comes over to us and somehow wiggles his way into our embrace until his head is resting on my shoulder and body sprawling out across Enjolras's torso.

Enjolras POV:
I gradually wake up the next day, legs asleep from the weight of Adaline and Gavroche. I slowly shift until I'm out from under my wife and her adoptive son. I kiss Adaline on the forehead and whisper to Courfeyrac about where I'm going. I ever-so-carefully pull back the secret gate of our barricade and venture off into the dark streets of Paris at dawn. I go to each spot where other barricades have been built, praying that at least one is still standing.
Each and every barricade has been overrun, the dead bodies of students and French soldiers alike scattered throughout the streets. Every civilian body is a punch in my gut. These citizens have barely begun to live and were cut down mercilessly. I crouch down next to a soldier and grab the few pouches of ammunition he had on his belt, knowing that the soft drizzle last night would damage the ammunition we have in store. I check my watch and see that I should be getting back. Adaline's probably scared out of her mind. I stand up again and jog back to our barricade.
Adaline POV:
"Where's Enjolras?" I say to Courfeyrac, panicking. I woke up today and didn't see my husband anywhere.
"He's checking the other barricades, making sure that they are still standing tall."
I bite my lower lip and begin to pace the length of the barricade, nervously awaiting Enjolras's return. I hear the barricade open and I whip around, seeing the red of Enjolras's jacket. I sprint over to him and jump into his arms, whispering, "Don't ever do that again!" His arm soothingly rubs my back and I recover control over my emotions. I pull out of our hug and look up into Enjolras's face, a face full of grief and a little bit of fear. "What is it?"
"Everyone's gone. Everyone, every single barricade."
Author's Note: Cliffhanger!! Next is going to be the part where Gavroche is supposed to die, but you'll have to read on to figure out if he does. It's basically the part where every single Ami dies, but I might show mercy and save some. Vive la France!!!
