Chapter 11: The Barricade Has Arisen!!
Disclaimer: I only own: Alec Javert, Adaline, Árielle, Marié, and Enjolras and Adaline's kids.
June 5th, 1832
Adaline POV:
I sprint into the Café Musain and see Graintaire seated on a stool, wine bottle in his hand and Madame Houcheloup in his lap.
"Get off your ass, it's begun!" I tore through the Café, picking up anything wooden I could find.
I hear Courfeyrac shouting, in his Northern Irish accent, "We need all the furniture you can throw down!! Throw everything you have!" Then, I hear a loud crash. I whip around and see the remnants of a piano on the cobblestone street. I stare at it for a moment, shrug, and then I turn tail, running into the streets and searching for Enjolras. I hear his voice and then see his red jacket.
"I need a volunteer!" he shouts, voice somehow reaching towards the back of the crowd. "Someone who can find out their plan and when they will attack!!" Then, some old man volunteers, singing.
"I can find out the truth
I know their ways
Fought their wars
Served my time
In the days
Of my youth!"
Why does this guy look so much like that creep Alec Javert? I don't know, but Enjolras seems to trust him.
Jehan starts to sing, handing the man a gun. "See the people unite!"
Grantaire, the cynic alcoholic he is, sings, "I pray you're right" and then immediately takes a gulp from his wine bottle.
Combeferre continues, singing, "Dogs will bark!"
Gavroche's merry voice joins in, singing, "Fleas will bite!"
I inhale and contribute my voice to our impromptu singing session. "They will do what is right!!" Enjolras's head turns to me, reassured that I am alright and not injured or, God forbid, dead. The man leaves the barricade, presumably going to spy on the French soldiers. Marius hands me a red flag, and I ascend the steps of our barricade with Enjolras at my side. Enjolras kisses me lightly and then takes the flag from my hand. He stands at the top of the barricade and places the flag in a spot where it could be seen flying in the wind. Of course, Enjolras has to stand at the part of the barricade with the least protection. I stand on Enjolras's right and Marius stands on his left.
"Red, the blood of angry men!!"
Everyone joins in the song, repeating the mantra that has grown familiar. "Black, the dark of ages past! Red, a world about to dawn!! Black, the night that ends at last!!!"Enjolras grabs his gun and cocks it, pointing it forward beyond the barricade.
We wait in this position for hours, waiting, waiting, waiting until the older man comes back from his spying. I see a silhouette in the dark and I point my pistol at him. Then, I see his face, hearing an Ami shouting, "He's back!!". Why does he look exactly like my stalker, Alec Javert? The old man starts to sing.
"Listen my friends
I have done as I said
I have been to their lines
I have counted each man
I will tell what I can
Better beware
They have armies to spare
And our danger is real
We will need all our cunning
To bring them to heel." We open up the barricade and the man walks into our fortress.
Enjolras nods his head at the man and sings, inspiring us all.
"Have faith
If you know what their movements are
We'll spoil their game
There are ways that a people can fight
We shall overcome their power."
The man continues his song, telling us the French army's plan of attack.
"I have overheard their plans
There will be no attack tonight." Enjolras looks suspiciously at the man. Normally the French army goes in guns blazing instead of holding back.
"They intend to starve us out
Before they start a proper fight
Concentrate their force
Hit us while it's light."
Then, I hear Gavroche's shout of "LIAR!!" I whip around to face Árielle and Gavroche, who are seated on top of the barricade.
"Good evening, dear inspector
Lovely evening, my dear." Gavroche starts their song, and Enjolras turns towards the man, face red with anger.
"We know this man, our friends
His name is Inspector Javert" Árielle continues in a sing-songy manner. I gasp. This is Alec's father? I shudder; if Enjolras hadn't met me two years ago at, well, basically where we are now, the man could have been my father-in-law. Javert's on the other side, he has to be. He's fighting with the French National Guard, against my one true love. Enjolras turns to me and wraps his arm around my waist.
"So don't believe a word he says
'Cause none of it's true
This only goes to show
What little people can do!" They sing this part in unison. As they sing, Javert starts to fight, trying to run away. Les Amis control him, Courfeyrac grabbing onto one of his arms.
"Bravo little Gavroche and Árielle, you're the top of the class!!" Courfeyrac praises.
Jehan joins in, musket pointed directly at Javert's head along with ten others.
"So what are we going to do
With this snake in the grass?"
Enjolras steps up to the Inspector, glaring directly into his eyes. Enjolras commands the revolutionaries.
"Tie this man and take him
To the tavern in there
The people will decide your fate
Inspector Javert!"
I smirk. He's not going to like being controlled by the people.
"Shoot me now, or shoot me later
Every schoolboy to his sport, death to each and every traitor,
I renounce your people's court." I roll my eyes at his amazing declaration of renouncement. Note the sarcasm there.
Marius commands the troops, shouting, "We keep looking forward!!" I turn for a second, and then all hell breaks loose. I hear them fighting, Javert trying to escape. I charge into the fray and see Javert pull back his arm, trying to punch another Ami. Luckily for that Ami, he ducks. Unluckily for me, the punch directly hits my lip. I recoil, hand over my mouth. I see Javert grab a pistol and start whacking people with it. Finally, Enjolras wrests the pistol from Javert's hands and smacks him in the back of the head with the butt of the pistol, knocking him unconscious.
Enjolras drops the pistol and turns to me, lifting my chin with his fingers. "Joly!" he shouts. "Adaline's bleeding." I look down at my fingers, smeared red with blood. Joly runs over with his medical bag, placing a piece of gauze over my lip. I hold it there until the bleeding stops, which only takes a couple of minutes. Then, I hear the ominous footfalls of the French army. They're here.
Author's Note: Well, this was interesting. We're getting to the good stuff now!! I'm really nervous even though I'm the one writing it! I hope you guys like the end results and that she figured out that her stalker, Alec Javert, is probably on the other side with the French army. I love Gavroche's enthusiasm in this song!! It's so good. Vive la France!!!
