Chapter 10: Do You Hear the People Sing?

Disclaimer: I only own Adaline, Árielle, Marié, Alec Javert, and any of Enjolras and Adaline's children.

Adaline POV:

It's the day of the barricade. Every single Ami is waiting in line for the funeral procession of General Lamarque, except Gavroche and Árielle. They are on top of the Elephant of Bastille overlooking the road where the rest of les Amis are standing. Enjolras is upright beside me, waiting calmly and not-so-patiently. He checks his pocket watch millions of times and then looks around to see if the procession is here yet. I grab onto his hand to calm him down. Our fingers interlace and he rubs his thumb on my hand. I look up into his sea-blue eyes, eyes alight with passion, dedication, and a little bit of nervousness.

"You okay?" I question quietly, gripping onto my red flag until my knuckles turn white.

"Yes, ma chérie. I just hope the parade comes in time."

"It won't help for you to be checking your watch every two seconds." I smirk up at him and he rolls his eyes. He kisses the top of my head, lips brushing my dark brown hair. Then, I hear the clip-clop of horses' hooves. Enjolras turns away from me, facing the side of the road and the rest of les Amis.

The horses, funeral carriage, and the French National Guard proceed through the streets ceremoniously. Enjolras's eyes are fixated on the carriage holding General Lamarque's dead body. Once the French National Guard drummers pass by Enjolras and I, my husband opens his mouth to sing.

"Do you hear the people sing?"

The rest of les Amis, including myself, continue his song, in angry tones that command attention.

"Singing a song of angry men?
It is the music of a people
Who will not be slaves again
"

Gradually, citizens join in our anthem and begin to rally around the music and message being sent through the song.

"When the beating of your heart
Echoes the beating of the drums
There is a life about to start
When tomorrow comes
"

I take a deep breath, waiting for Enjolras's nod to Marius signalling when we will make our move. Enjolras told me before the rally that he wanted me to be at his side throughout the procession to make sure that I don't get hurt.

"Will you join in our crusade?
Who will be strong and stand with me?
Beyond the barricade
Is there a world you long to see?
"

Enjolras nods his head curtly towards Marius and grabs the red flag my husband has been hiding behind his back. He runs out into the middle of the road, swinging the red flag of our rebellion in an infinity circle. I run with him, staying by his side as I told him I would.

"Then join in the fight
That will give you the right to be free
""Do you hear the people sing?
Singing a song of angry men?
It is the music of a people
Who will not be slaves again
"

I see Marius running towards the funeral carriage and climbing on top of it. I somehow maneuver myself through the crowd towards where Marius is standing tall on top of General Lamarque's funeral carriage. Enjolras is climbing the carriage as well. I get on top of the decorative emblems on the carriage but can't get any higher. Luckily, Enjolras sees me and grabs onto my arms, pulling me up and wrapping his arm around me in a hug. He continues to sing along with all of the citizens and les Amis.

"When the beating of your heart
Echoes the beating of the drums
There is a life about to start
When tomorrow comes

Will you give all you can give"

I see Gavroche and Árielle on top of the Elephant, waving their red flags high with mile-wide grins.

"So that our banner may advance
Some will fall and some will live
Will you stand up and take your chance?
The blood of the martyrs
Will water the meadows of France
"

Somehow, some French soldiers start to sing along, les Amis clapping their arms around the soldiers' shoulders. I have no clue how we got these people to sing along. All I know is Javert isn't singing along. Neither are my "parents." My father's a captain in the French National Army. I see Graintaire forcing the carriage driver along with a gun to his back.

"Do you hear the people sing?
Singing a song of angry men?
It is the music of a people
Who will not be slaves again
When the beating of your heart
Echoes the beating of the drums
There is a life about to start
When tomorrow comes
"

I inhale, seeing more soldiers creeping along through alleyways and different streets. Enjolras's flag is raised high, his chest heaving. Marius has this idiotic look on his face, but he has that look all the time. More French soldiers trot up on horses; a French captain screams out orders. That's not my father.

"HALT!!" he shouts. The soldiers stop in their tracks. Enjolras steps slightly ahead of me, gun pointed forward like Marius's. I look around and shout for Courfreyac to give me a sword. He reaches up and hands the lethal weapon to me. "DRAW!!!" soldiers pull out their guns and swords. I hear a gunshot, Enjolras's hand finding mine. I squeeze it quickly, just to reassure myself and him that we're both still alive. I scream as I see an old woman down on the floor, blood pouring from a gunshot wound in her chest. Les Amis are furious, screaming at the unfortunate soldier who shot the gun.

"She's an innocent woman!!"

"MURDERER!!!"

People keep shouting and two citizens rush towards where the gunshot came from, pulling the soldier out. Everything turns into chaos, guns firing everywhere and the faint sound of "CHARGE!" coming from the enemy captain. Enjolras shoots his gun and hits a soldier, making him slump off of the horse. I look around for any enemies and finally engage one, locking in a sword battle with the opposing soldier. I expect resistance to my swing, but there's none. My sword has sliced through bone, muscle, and flesh. I gasp. I just killed someone. I see Courf fall down, but he's pulled up by some old man. Marius somehow steals a horse and he pulls it alongside the carriage. I hesitatingly jump off the carriage and land on the horse's back, gripping onto Marius's jacket so that I don't fall off. Throughout all the chaos, I still hear Enjolras's order.

"TO THE BARRICADES!!!!" Marius pushes the horse forward and it gallops off. I cling to whatever I can, praying that I don't fall off. Furniture starts pouring down from the windows of buildings: chairs, tables, and even pianos. Marius guides the horse through the streets, finally pulling to a stop next to the Café Musain. I get off the horse, jumping down from its back. My feet jar from the landing, but it's better than being dead. I frantically look around for Enjolras, seeing no red jacket. Then, I feel a hand on my shoulder. I whip around, still holding my sword. I see the red jacket and drop the sword, hearing the clang sound it makes as it falls. I collapse into Enjolras's arms. "Adaline, are you okay? Adaline!" he exclaims.

"I'm-I'm fine," I say, voice wobbling. "I need to help with the barricade." I run off, trying to help in any way I can.

Author's Note: We're getting to the good stuff!! I'm nervous and I already know what's going to happen!! I was watching Les Mis but then my dad told me that we had to stop the movie to watch Eco-Challenge. I got to the part when Jean Valjean got to the barricade, but Drink With Me wasn't sung yet. For some reason, I've never noticed that Enjolras does this weird hip wiggle when he points his gun forwards with Marius. It's so odd but very attractive!! Vive la France!
