CHAPTER ONE; LADIE BEHIND THE DESK

CHAPTER ONE;
                                                           LADIE BEHIND THE DESK
April
....

I smiled gratefully at a black car that has stopped to let me walk by. I was used to the big city traffic but New Jersey traffic was nothing compared to New York's traffic especially when its early in the morning and everyone is rushing to get to work. I speed walk as fast as I can so I won't get run over a truck and die when I haven't even started my first day at a new job that I've recently applied at.

As much as I love my sister, I was little annoyed at her constent nagging at me getting a real job. Writing is a real job. I mean there's a chance my books wouldn't get published but it made me happy. My sister had finally made me apply a application to be a assistant for the owner who owns a lingerie company by the title of Birdiebee. Never heard of it? Trust me I didn't either till my sister told me. Apparently its the biggest lingerie company in the nation. Its constantly coming out with new lingerie and opening stores around the globe. Its owned by a woman by the name of Nicole Garcia. I haven't even met the woman but already her name is practically screaming dominance.

I was living in my hometown in New Jersey before I got the job. When I apply they said I could just Skype with one of the head workers named Danielle. I was just answering whatever came on my mind. I didn't have the desire to go all out to land me the place. I wasn't sure if I was going to get the job since a ton of people applied and had much more experience, but I guess my interview was good enough to get me the spot as Nicole Garcia's assistant.

The tall fancy building appear in my vision. Unlike the rest of the buildings that were simply and nothing to it, Birdiebee was gold and tall. I gulp already feeling defeated. I probably should of let one of those cars hit me.

I push past feeling imitated and walk towards the building. I could already tell that this Nicole Garcia loves the fancier things. The lobby was beautifully decorated with leather chairs, golden walls with mirrors, and on the ceiling had a huge chandelier dangling over my head.

"Wow." I muttered to myself as I admired everything. I felt so out of place. This was not me at all. Due to my lack of paying attention to where I was going, I bumped into a person.

"Ow fuck." I heard a lady muttered as she composed herself. Her fiery red hair surrounded me in perfect curls. Her menacing eyes glared at me.

"Oh I'm so sorry." I apologize quickly.

My eyes drifted to the golden M necklace hanging from her neck.
"They should really stop with theses charity work." With that she bumped my shoulder softly and walked out of the building.

I rolled my eyes at her rude manner. I wasn't going to let something so little ruin my day. With that, I walked towards the elevators and pressed the button remembering the directions Danielle had given me. Before the doors could shut fully a tattoo hand stopped them from shutting. A tall lean man heavily tattooed walked in holding a huge box that looked heavy.

"Floor six please." He told me as he struggled to keep his grip on the box. I pressed the floor number for him and stood by him. I felt his eyes shower over my frame with curiosity.

I gave him a smile smile, "Hello." I greeted.

"Is it your first day?" He asked as he shifted the box in his arms.

I nodded my head, "Yeah."

He gave me a kind smile, "You'll be fine. I'm Phil." He greets offering his out stretch hand to shake. I smile and gladly shakes his hand.

"April."

"So what's your job?" He asked.

"I'm Ms. Garcia's new assistant."

"Yikes."

I look at him with a questioning stare, "Is that a bad thing?"

He sighs and scratches the back of his neck with his free hand, "I don't want to say this since your new and all but Ms. Garcia is....tough. Hopefully you have a lot of patients." Phil says.

I bit my lip and nodded my head, "Trust me I do."

"Then this job should be easy for you."

"Hopefully."

Just then the elevator dinged indicating that we just arrive on the sixth floor.

"Well good luck to you April, I hope I see you around." He says giving me a warm smile and walking out of the elevator.

"Bye!" I called out as the doors closed. I was left alone in the presence of the empty elevator. The door soon opened once again and I was face with what was called the seventh floor.

The floors was white tile making my dirty old beat up converse look like shit. The walls were grey. Several fames filled with black and white artwork occupied the walls. I walked up to one of the receptionist that was sitting between a huge white desk.

"Um I'm April Mendez, Ms. Garcia's new assistant." I said to the woman who had blonde straight hair and bright red lips.

A smile emerged from her face making me feel a little comfortable. "Oh yes! Let me just imform Danielle that your here. In the meanwhile feel free to wait in those chairs over there." I sent her a kind smile and walked away.

A few minutes later Danielle walked into the room. A huge smile was plastered on her face as she shook my hand. "Hello April and welcome to Birdiebee! Ms. Garcia has been expecting for your revival."

"Has she now?"

"Yes! Once I told her that we found a perfect assistant for her, she was just exhilarated."

I cocked my head at her, "Are you being serious or are you just sugarcoating it."

She bit her lip and held up a hand gesture, "Just a little. Now let's head to Ms. Garcia's office."

Walking through the halls to Ms. Garcia's imitating. Awards that she and the company has won were hanged up. This woman was successful and powerful. It was terrifying. Now I wasn't too sure if I wanted to work for here.

"Here we are." Announced Danielle. She softly knocked on the door earning a soft answer of come in. Danielle softly opened the door reviling what was Ms. Garcia with her back turned to us on the phone.

"Yes, I'll go this week to check out how they look...yes don't worry about it. Alright then, I'll keep in touch. Have a nice day." She finally hanged up with whoever she was on the phone with.

"Ms. Garcia this is your new assistant, April Mendez." Danielle announced as Ms. Garcia turned around.

She was gorgeous. As she turned around to face me and immediately she took my breath away. Her wavy brown locks framed her body well. Her eyes were brown sending me a soft feeling about them. If I could use a word to describe her it will have to be breath taking. I suddenly felt moved by her presence.

I cleared my throat as I took a step towards her. I held out a hand to her, "Hello I'm April."

She looked me up and down and just as I thought she was going to tear me down, a warm smile appeared on her face. She cupped my hand with her slightly larger one.

"Ms. Garcia but please call me Nicole."
I felt my cheeks heat up as her eyes stared into mine. "Please have a set." She said nicely.

Nicole looked at Danielle and gave her a small nod of appreciation, "Thank you Danielle, you may go now."

Danielle sent a small smile my way and left the room shuting the door behind her. Nicole walked back to her desk and sat down.

"So April, from what I have read about you that you have graduated from the university of Union City. You have a major in Business and Marketing. You were born March 19, 1987. You had perfect grades through high school and college and you don't have a criminal record. See that's all stuff I know from your application and that information isn't enough for me. So I want to know more about you."

I shifted in my seat crossing my legs, "What do you want to know?"

"Why did you decide to get into business and marketing?"

"I first was in journalism but that didn't really work out for me so I decided to get into business and marketing and I just kinda stuck with it and grew a passion for it." I was totally embarrassed for my answer. I really just decided to get into it since that didn't seem so boring to me like everything else was.

"When did you graduate college?"

"Three and a half years ago."

She tucked a piece of hair behind her ear. The more I stare at her the more I wanted to get to know her. Nicole seemed like the type of person to hold secrets. She seems to demand obedience from others without even asking.

"What about you?" I said my curiosity getting the best of me, "Why did you get into business and marketing?"

She looked up at me, her brown eyes washing over me. "Just like you. I decided to go into it and I just stuck with it."

"Had you heard about Birdiebee before you apply?" She asked.

"To be honest no. My sister loves the lingerie from here and raves about it. She's the one that suggested I apply for this job. I am more a Walmart gal. Their lingerie is nice and comfortable."

She chuckled, "So you don't really like any expensive lingerie?"

I placed my hands in my lap and sent Nicole a sheepish smile, "To me the Victoria Secret lingerie is uncomfortable for me. Which is okay since I really don't have anything to fill into their stuff."

"I prefer to have nothing on."

My face was heating up. I avoided any eye contact below Nicole's face. God I feel like a teenager. "I take your a supporter of free the nipples?"

Nicole broke out into a fit of laughter. Her laugh was nice. It was that kind that was just free.

"Sure. Union city huh?"

"Born and raise."

"How's New York treating you?"

"The traffic is too slow."

"Enough of small talk, I want to make one thing clear." She said as she stood up from her desk. She smooth out the front of her dark red dress that hugged her body perfectly. She walked in front of me and leaned against her desk.

"What is it?" I said as I looked her tall frame up and down. She was the opposite from me. She was tall while I was short. She had curves while I had none. She brought a powerful aura while I brought a nonexistent personality.

"I am a hard worker. You see Birdiebee means the world to me. I build this company from nothing. I will do anything to keep it safe and secure. I will not tolerate any underactive. I expect a lot from you from what I have read. I personally hand picked you for this job and I don't want you to let me down. If you don't think you can handle this job this is your last chance to walk out."

She held pure superiority. She made sure her point was clear. There was something about her that I felt myself graviting towards. She held something her mind that was untouchable and unresolved.

I wasn't the quiter. I didn't give up on things so easily. If it was going to be a tough situation then I am willing to put up a fight to claim my vigorous.

I stood up on my feet. I placed my hands behind my back so she won't notice them shaking out of neurotic. I stood just at her shoulder. I didn't let her height or imitating poise make me back down.

"Ms. Garcia, Nicole, I promise you that I will be a hard worker for your beloved company. I understand what if feels to come from nothing. Trust me I do, but I guaranteed that I will do my best to please you in any way I can. All I ask is for you to put your faith in me. I may be little but I have a strong personality to push me to be successful."

She gripped my chin her hand forcing me to look her in her eyes. The manner made me feel controlled of. We stared at each other for a while not saying anything. I felt her nails starting to press into my skin but I didn't bother moving.

"Very well." She let go of me and stepped back. "I am enthusiastic to work with you April. Let's get started."
