LILY LOVE RANT
DISCLAIMER: There's going to be spoilers for: Lily Love, Buko Girl, I Am My Wife, Acethexis, The Third Party, My Joy and Pulse.
If you haven't read these books and you still want to read them without any spoilers, don't read this chapter.
Thank you, and you've been warned! :3
So, a while back, I heard in some form of media(probably an YouTube video) that the manga " I am my wife" was bad and weird.
I have never heard of it beforehand, but that name got stuck in my head for a long time, until last Friday, which was the day I decided I wanted to find another app so I could discover new manga to read (since it's Easter break, I wanted to revisit Lily Love and Pulse, since I do that every break and vacation :3).
So, after I downloaded it, the first thing I searched was...
You guessed it, freaking hentai boiiiii :D
Nah, I'm joking, I searched for "lily" in general, since there's a lot of yuri mangas with this word. (For example, Lily Love, Life Of A Lily, Everyday Lily, Lily, ect..., and yes, there's a manga just called Lily)
So, I started reading I Am My Wife but I'm not really liking it.
The plot doesn't make sense and it's weird. :/
I mean, the plot is just a guy who goes to his long-time crush wedding, then he's sad about it, suddenly, lightning strikes him and then he wakes up in a girl's body back in 2006. (Same year that a lot of horrible things happened, like, Sonic O6, Step Up and Barnyard...)
And I know, the plot is not even that good to begin with but I'm pretty sure that the author could have made a pretty good story with this premise!!
I will take Buko Girl as a great example!!
Buko Girl is a story about a boy (whose name I don't remember) who's mistaken by a girl.
One day, the God Loki, (which for some reason, is a girl in this story or at least it has a female body) is bored that they don't do anything in the God's world or whatever so they decide that they want to make this boy's life a living hell, so they turn him into a girl, just to mess around. the plot gets better when he tells that he's a boy to his best friend, but instead of him not believing him, he helps and tries to think of a solution to help his friend.
Within it, the boy also still needs to bond with his crush, a girl which I don't remember the name of. then, all of the good questions come in like, is he still a boy or is he technically a girl?, can he go to the boys bathroom or does he need to go to the girls'?, will he still like girls, or will his mind change along with his body?
All of this is answered in this manga and it's freaking awesome!!
I will probably give a better look at Buko Girl again, but the thing is, the book is 110 chapters long, which is long af, so only time will say if I will talk about this book or not...
But I'm getting way off the topic, so, let's talk about Lily Love!!!
Where do I begin, I freaking love this manga and it's easily my favorite one!!!
It was also my first yuri manga, and there's a lot of weird yuri manga out there, so I was really happy when I first found it :D.
So, let's start with the the plot.
The plot is nice and simple :3.
A girl named Donath, which in translation from Thai is basically Donut, (also, that's how she's referred in the rest of the story) thinks that she's not good enough for any boy to like her, she's nerdy, has a big forehead and has a flat chest.
She then goes to see how her laundry is going, when then, she encounters a girl who's reading a book while smoking. (Also, for some reason, in Thailand it's bad when a girl is smoking)
They then begin to talk, when Donut coughs from the smoke, and then we realize that the girl's name is Mew :3.
She's funny and cheerful and she lives right next to Donut. (what a coincidence, am I right?)
They don't talk much in the past few days but in the winter break, while all of Donut's friends are in vacation out of city, she meet with Mew who is also in town, taking care of her hamster called Leo.
With this occurrence, Mew decided to go to Donut's room to celebrate New Year's with her, since they were both alone.
Mew then talks about her dreams of going to foreign countries, learning their culture and languages, while Donut says that she has no real dreams, she just want to take a degree to have a good house, a good job who pays well and a good life in general.
In the countdown, things get a little spicy when Mew trips on herself (don't drink too much kids) and stops falling on Donut.
They almost kissed but Mew just goes away, leaving Donut alone in her room.
In the day when winter break was over, Donut had a dream where Mew was in it, she thought it was weird but she let it slide.
They then meet again when Mew says that she had lost her first earrings that her mother had gave her.
After Donut finds them, Mew gives a hug for how happy she is but before Donut could do anything, Mew asked if they can stay like that for a while.
Donut doesn't like it, so, she quickly stops the hug and says that she was hugging too tight.
Mew understands it as a red flag so she goes out of Donut's room once more.
After that, Donut thinks that Mew is mad at her so she goes asking for advices at her good friend, Ice :3
Ice tells that love is love no matter what gender the lovers are, making Donut full of determination to confess her love to Mew.
In a nutshell, Mew also feels the same love for Donut and then they start dating.
Of course all of what i just said here Is way better in the manga, and with far more "action".
The plot is also very well constructed and the characters are likeable and adorable!! (Except Mew's dad and Ton)
I think the art style is not very important but I love Ratana Satis art style!!
It's so funny and elegant at the same time.
I also love the characters designs and personalities.
So without further ado, let's get into the characters! :D
Donut is cute and lovable, she is one of the best characters, and since the story is about her, we can see what she's thinking and her personality in her mind.
She can also be a little jealous and sarcastic.
My favorite parts of her personality is when she goes almost insane because of the guilt that she's feeling.
Her face is also scary and it's just fantastic!!
I don't know why love this side of her so much, I mean, this is one of the worst parts of the book but I like seeing this side of her!!
Mew is another lovable bun but she's way more savage than Donut, I mean, just look at this line!!
She's also older than Donut, since she's already in last year of University.
Then, there's Ploy, Mew's ex-girlfriend. At first encounters we have with her, she looks annoying and a brat but after a few chapters, she's just a brat :D.
There's also Ice, Jigsaw and Gib. They're side characters but they're still unique in their own ways!
Ice is a nice friend and someone who Donut can trust, she can also be sarcastic and can get irritated by Ploy really easily.
Jigsaw doesn't talk much since she's the quietest of the four, but she still gets an important part of the story in the farewell party for Mew. And last but not least, Gib.
She's talkative af and loves gossiping about everything, but most importantly, about boys, and since they talk a lot about it, Donut feels like she doesn't fit in they're group.
So now, let's talk about everything that makes this manga so good!!
1- It's balanced with Romance, Fluff and Sex.
In contrast with Pulse and Always Human, Lily Love doesn't have too much sex or too much romance without sex, it's balanced and it has context.
I mean, yes, the sex parts have context in Pulse and having too much romance also makes sense in Always Human but that's something that those two will always miss.
Lily Love has both of them and it's perfectly balanced has all things should be. (I'm sorry but I had to :D)
2-The plot and the story makes sense and it's nice.
As I told before, the plot is really simple and as the title says, it's just yuri love, but that doesn't mean that it doesn't have good drama and a compelling story!!
The jealousy that Donut has for Mew's and Ploy's past intimacy its a good way to keep the story going, and the drama that happens with Mew going to a foreign country as she wanted and Donut being sad about it it's also a pretty good way to have drama into the story. These events are some good ways to keep a compelling and unique story, even if it's similar to this specific subject (drama about the ex, ect...)
But then, there's those stories which try to be a lot more than what they really are, like My Joy, (ugh, I fucking hate this piece of shit!!) Acethexis (I can't enjoy this comic, it's just... unenjoyable) and The Third Party. (Even though there are a lot yuri manga fans that love this book, and I understand why but I don't find it interesting).
These three try a lot to be good with their originality and drama but It doesn't go well with flow.
In My Joy, the drama just makes us (the reader) feel rage against the characters.
In Acethexis, the drama makes us feel uneasy. In the beginning, the author throws this drama about the protagonist parents at us, why? We don't know anything about this protagonist, so, why do we care?
We don't know if the protagonist is a good person or not. We don't know if they have (our expectations of) good intentions, so why do we care???
In The Third Party, the drama just... breaks our heart... especially in the ending...
I will show you the best quote about this manga that a Webtoon reader posted in Age Matters.( Age Matters is an awesome webtoon that is being created by the same author who created The Third Party, aka Enjelicious)
(Maybe someday I will talk about The Third Party but that means I need to re-read it and I don't really feel like it)
3- It's not too long or too short, it's perfectly balanced.
So, to talk about "extension" in mangas, we need to set a few rules for it.
1- In my opinion, an extensive manga doesn't mean that is bad or good, it means that is long, so I don't take opinion for its extension, only for its contents.
2- A manga can be long if: it has a lot of chapters with a lot pages in it. (For example, Octave has 36 chapters which is not a lot but it has about 32 pages each, which makes 1152 pages the whole book).
A manga doesn't seem like much (even though, it is a lot!!) but imagine that in a book like Inferno by Dan Brown!!! (Now that would be hell ;33333)
3- A manga can be short if: it has a few chapters, even if they have a lot of pages; it has a lot of chapters with few pages (For example, Always Human, it has 86 chapters but it doesn't have a lot of pages, around 12 pages I guess)
So, with that settled, Lily Love it's a relatively medium manga, since it has 36 chapters with maybe 19 pages each.
Comparing with this mesure, Buko Girl is really long, Pulse is long, Always Human is kinda medium, Everyday Lily is short and oneshots is the shorter a story can get.
So now, since we talked about the things that make this manga so good, let's talk about its flaws!! :D
1- The story doesn't have a long, deep conversation between characters (most importantly, between Mew and Donut)
This is something that doesn't ruin the story but it can be a little uncomfortable, since it feels that the characters aren't in good terms yet.
Taking Always Human as an example, the protagonists have a deep conversation about what they want for their relationship after they had a fight.
This is natural and they talk about everything that they need and want to talk, and it feels good seeing them making up, instead in Lily Love, they talk parts of it in separate conversations and that feels wrong in a way, I don't know how to explain it but, it doesn't feel right.
2-It isn't colorized :/
As you could see in some of the screenshots I took for this chapter, (the characters screenshots, etc.) the manga doesn't have colors, and well, I can understand why, like:
If the author was going to publish this as a physical book in their country, it would be expensive to be colorized;
Or maybe the author had in mind people who were colorblind, to be easy for them to understand the story.
But then, without the colors, weird things like this appears:
Okay so, she says she doesn't have white skin but in the artwork she does have white skin?? Also, I'm not saying anything good or bad about her skin color but this confuses me a little.
And we could even say that "Ok, maybe the artwork is not canon in any way or form", ok, that's fine by me, but then, here's where it confuses me.
There's a special chapter called "Secret Scene" which, spoiler alert, it's just a chapter where Mew and Donut have sex, and would you look at that, this chapter has colors!
And again, Donuts is represented like this:
So again, it's a sex chapter, let's think that maybe it isn't canon after all, but still, in the last chapter of Pulse, there's a cameo of Donut and Mew and again it's the same color skin as the other representations of Donut colorized:
So, as I said, this is just something weird that still confuses me to this day and I still can't find a solution to it.
We can take Donut's words for it and maybe she doesn't have white skin but again, why isn't her representations colorized loyal to her words?
It isn't something that turns this story bad but it's something that I think it could be addressed.
3-The final chapter is absolute garbage
So, I don't know if this the "Three Musketeers" fault (the group who translated Lily Love in English) but, the final chapter, the one you think it would be great, it's fucking shit!
Just look at the first page:
Okay, right off the bat the font of the text is different. I know this looks like I'm nitpicking but it makes a big difference when you're already familiar with the normal manga font and then it changes to this. Second, in the first line, it wasn't supposed to be written "Some say"?
And what the fuck is happy time??? (Is this some Borat joke or what?)
Also, forward in this chapter this line appears:
Who the fuck is Namkhangsai?
I tried to find a specific translation for it and I think they're referring to Ice but I couldn't find that exact word, only this:
I don't know if it was authors fault of the translation team fault but I freaking hate this chapter!
The only good thing that we have is in the final page, and even though I said spoiler alert in the beginning of the chapter, I will not spoil the ending because I still want you to read this amazing manga which even though have its flaws, it's an amazing work who still needs to be acknowledged by people in general...
So, this is Lily Love for you fellas.
I hope you liked this chapter, it's a little longer than usual but I liked making this.
