78: Say Hello, Again

It had been a long, long labor. Sangwoo insisted that you try and do it with an epidural resulting in you getting even more tired than otherwise, meaning you took more breaks and the whole thing took hours. Twenty-two hours all together. Ten hours of active labor. Nine times you vomited. Eight cups of ice chips. Seven "I can't do it"s. Six naps you woke Sangwoo from. Five nurses running around. Four bouts of crying. Three minutes crowning. Two new parents. And finally a baby was in your arms.

"And someone said she thought we'd have a boy." Sangwoo laid on the bed next to you, holding you closely while you had the baby laying on your bare chest.

You had a birth plan laid out and despite the long labor, everything had gone well. Right now you were going through "delayed clamping", which meant you were leaving the baby attached to the placenta until it was finally expelled. In the mean time, you were falling in love with you baby.

"Chae-rin." You leaned your sweaty head against Sangwoo's. "I thought I'd like that name for a girl."

"It's definitely a colorful one." Sangwoo remarked as he marveled at his tiny human. "That's okay. I'm sure she'll have a colorful life. Oh Chae-rin. I like it. Are you sure you don't want to name her something that sounds more like Sangwoo?" He joked with you as he watched you carefully.

You paused for a moment as you tried to finish out your labor. Nothing really could have prepared you for this; but now it was over and you were happy to be a small family of three.

Four if you counted Yoon Bum.

You didn't.

In fact, you were worried about going home to him. He didn't really talk anymore and he gave you such frightful looks sometimes that you wondered if he had cracked up while down in the basement. As you held your tiny daughter closely and the nurses began prepping her to have her umbilical cord cut and newborn tests done, you whispered in her baby ear as soft as you could.

"You will always come first Chae-rin. My life belongs to you now."

"And mine belongs to you, Gi-ae. I will protect you so you can protect her. This is my own tiny little family now."

"Get rid of the trespasser in our home, Sang." You whispered in his ear as your daughter made soft little noises of contentment.

This threw Sangwoo off. He hadn't expected such a request, especially now.

"Would you like to cut the cord, Papa?" One of the nurses asked Sangwoo. He looked at you for your approval and after a tired nod, he scampered to the edge of the bed.

"Alright, so we clamped it right here, so you need to cut just below this. Okay?"

"What if I mess up? Do people mess up?" Sangwoo asked nervously as he held the sharp scissors in place.

"You really can't mess it up. Go ahead, sir." The nurse encouraged.

After a deep breath, he sliced through the foreign material.

And there you had it: Oh Chae-rin. The world says hello.
