68: You Guessed It
"Hyperemesis gravidarum." The doctor came in and gave a name to your illness before she gave her own. "Dr. Park."
Sangwoo stood up, holding you in his arms and shook the doctor's outstretched hand.
"Not deadly, but not healthy. We're going to hook her up to an IV for a few hours to replenish her fluids and electrolytes. Then once the IV is in, we'll give her a nasogastric tube to get some food into her. Metoclopramide when you get home. Go ahead and set her down, she'll be fine."
"Is that antibiotics? Will me or my roommate catch it?" Sangwoo was really worried. He couldn't afford to stop working. He already didn't get paid enough to take care of two totally dependent people. Gently, he laid you down on the bed.
The doctor looked at Sangwoo. Her nose twitched. Her lips twitched. Her eye twitched. And then she laughed.
"Oh my goodness, I am so sorry, this is so incredibly unprofessional. Please, excuse me." The woman removed her glasses and wiped her teary eyes. "No. You cannot catch it. It's an unfortunate condition that stems from pregnancy."
"Oh. OH. What?" Sangwoo was shaken. "She takes birth control. Every day."
"Every day? Hmm. Well, if she just started taking it, then it wouldn't be effective for about a week. Regardless, it say here you're both engaged. She's quite thin and it's quite early. Why not move the wedding up?" The doctor mentioned inappropriately. It wasn't her place to insinuate such a thing. But Sangwoo didn't care.
A father... I'm... I'll have to go back to school to support us all... I wonder how Bum will take it. How Gi-ae will take it.
The doctor cleared her throat.
"Well, I'm sure that's a lot to take in. Get comfortable and we'll send a nurse in shortly to start treatment. Hopefully it should fade by the later months, but the prescription will be written for the next eight months." And with that, she left the room.
Sangwoo's mood quickly lifted.
"Oh, oh! OH!! Gi-ae! Gi-ae! Wake up!" He shook your shoulder, jostling you slightly more awake.
"Sang? Am I... okay?" You groaned as you held your stomach.
"Oh my God, you're pregnant. Pregnant! We're going to have a baby! We're going to have to get married next month. We're going to move up the wedding and then we're going to have a baby!"
"Yay..." You smiled as you took it all in, still faint from your illness.
It wasn't long before a nurse came in and did all the procedures that were promised. And it wasn't long before you were awake and able to share in the joy of the news. And the news that the date of the wedding was about to be set. Everything was going well for you. And it seemed like it might stay that way.
When you both arrived home, prescription in hand, Bum rushed over.
"Is she okay, Sangwoo?" He looked at you with concern.
"Better than okay, Bum! We're going to have a baby." Sangwoo beamed.
And Bum's world turned upside-down... or perhaps right-side-up.
