51: Closer to the Truth
"You know, I really don't think you're living up to our deal here. I wanted you to help me around the complex, but you're really just making more of a mess. You're not good at cleaning for being a housewife." The landlady was scolding you again for who knows what.
"I'm so sorry, Mrs. Landlady! I will try harder today!" You bowed your head towards her, not wanting to lose your home.
"Right. Well I'm meeting up with an old friend of mine today for tea, so please make sure the walkway is clear. I know that's difficult for you to follow directions, but this is very important."
"Yes, ma'am."
You sighed as you walked towards the utility closet. It was just another day of hard labor for you. But at least you could just imagine killing the landlady while you swept.
Arguably, you did suck at your job. You just swept haphazardly, following the directions given to you. You weren't really making more of a mess... just ensuring she would need you the next day as well. It was a pretty good plan, but each day you spent here, you got more and more nervous. There was a second reason that getting married was ideal for you and Sangwoo. Upon saying "I do" your name would become Oh Gi-ae, and you'd stop being a missing person. You could go outside without fear of being snatched up by the police. You could have a job, if you wanted. You'd no longer be the princess kept hidden away in the castle. You'd be the queen, free to roam. Although after this experience, you weren't really keen on venturing out. Or having a job.
"Where is Sang when I need him most?" You mumbled under your breath as another old lady walked up the sidewalk.
"Hello? Are you the new help here? I'm a friend of the landlady here. She should be expecting me. Could you show me to her apartment?" She looked nice enough and although it wasn't in your job description (not that you had one at all) to escort strangers around the complex, you decided it wouldn't hurt. So, you nodded and led her down to the apartment she was looking for.
"Here it is, ma'am." You pushed the open door open even further.
"Thank you, dear. You're very kind." The woman went into the apartment and you pulled the door slightly shut. "My old friend! What a darling girl you have working for you, I'm afraid I forgot her name."
"She said her name was Goo Gi-ae. Isn't that familiar?" The landlady asked.
You stood against the door and listened in. This was not a good development.
"Same name as that little baby girl who went missing all those years ago. Pretty common name though."
"Baby? She was almost a teenager. Huh. Just a funny coincidence I guess."
You were already running back up to your room. If she got any closer to the truth, then you were going to have to do something and it would have to be without any of Sangwoo's help.
