41: Calling the Bluff
Bum tripped in trying to move the buffer to the basement.
"Ugh! Just move" Sangwoo complained as he yanked Bum back up by the shirt. He looked back at you and tilted his head towards the "special drawer." Nodding you went to go retrieve the item.
"I can do it!" Bum cried out. "I can..."
You watched from the door as Bum struggled with the heavy machine. Before Sangwoo went down the stairs, you covertly handed him the knife.
"Let's put it there. Move that box." Sangwoo commanded.
Once again, Bum stumbled.
"Agh! You got it all over my clothes! Damn it! This doesn't even come off easily!" Sangwoo shoved his sleeve in Bum's face. "I knew this would happen. From the moment you said you'd carry it down here!!" Sangwoo groaned and looked at you briefly. Then, he looked back at Bum. "What're you gonna do about this?! Whatever. Just wasting my breath with this. Go back up."
As Sangwoo walked to the stairs, you noticed that he was staring straight ahead and his face went void of emotions.
"Bum." He said, deathly calm.
"Yes?" Bum stopped on the stairs.
"It was a lie!!!" Sangwoo smiled cutely. "I was actually lying... I'm sorry I treated you like an idiot!"
"...Huh? I-I'm not sure what you're..."
"But you two are the same, aren't you? Since when did you two get so close? My, my... doing these things behind my back..." Sangwoo frowned deeply. Another betrayal from Bum. Another reason that he was better off dead. "I thought you said it was just us three?"
Suddenly, he lunged forward with the knife.
"Ugh!!" The stranger called out as he ran out from the staircase. That's when Sangwoo got the look.
"Who are you?" Sangwoo asked. You watched from the top of the staircase, absolutely delighted. "Who are you, and what were you doing behind the basement stairs?"
A reasonable question, honestly. You thought to yourself with a huge smile.
"Uh..."
"Ah... Playing dumb are we?"
"S-Sangwoo... Sangwoo!" Bum was sweating profusely.
"Shut your mouth." Sangwoo pointed the knife at Bum. "I'm going to question you next... slowly. Be ready." Sangwoo looked back at the strange man. "This is your last chance. Who are you?"
"...I'm a police officer." He finally said.
"Police?" Sangwoo looked moderately shocked. He hadn't expected the guy to be so straightforward. "Why would the police..."
"Oh Sangwoo, I'm placing you under arrest on suspicion of murder! I'm sure your involvement with other cases will be discovered once we investigate you. Since you don't appear to be in a stable state of mind, I am allowed to shoot at my discretion... So I suggest you cooperate..."
"By 'Shoot,' do you mean with a gun?" Sangwoo looked up at you, but you had already left. There was a contingency plan for this. You were to remain absolutely hidden. Sangwoo could protect himself from the cops. But he couldn't protect you from them.
"That's right..."
"Looks like I'm cornered!" Sangwoo said in a very eerie voice. "Alright, shoot then."
"What?" The police officer asked.
"You can shoot my arm or my leg and arrest me!"
The police officer paused. This was... highly unusual.
"You don't actually have a gun, do you?" Sangwoo pressed.
"What makes you say that?"
"You would've shown me the gun before you threatened me. And the way you spoke first was too suspicious..." You were listening in from the vents. Your secret hiding place had a vent directly attached to the basement. Perfect for hearing what they were saying... or listening to the screams of Sangwoo's victims. Either way.
