Prologue
All around us is magic, even in as modern times as this, from the rising sun to true love's kiss. But there is also the rare magic, the unexpected and true, passed down through the centuries from Caster to Caster, it is a tightly knit and hidden community, to ensure the pureness of the power. But sometimes there is the straggler who finds love of the mortal kind, strays from the group and creates a family.
Caster William Moore looked outside his boundaries of love and found Marissa one rainy night in town. Their eyes met and William was completely mesmerized by her beauty and she the same with him. After a year they were wed and soon had a beautiful baby girl with long golden hair.
The community of Casters was uneasy when they heard the news of a child born of Caster and mortal, and one particular Caster was more upset than the rest. Ravana, who had loved William passionately. She complained to the highest Caster court saying the child would be a danger to all with its unknown potential. The court decided if the child posed a threat it would be handled but for now she was deemed harmless. Ravana, enraged, stormed into William and Marissa's home one stormy night. William sprung from bed in front of his frightened wife and child, threatening her to leave. She replied "Give me the child, and I will leave peacefully". William refused to give up his child and advanced, fire burning in his hands, but Ravana was too fast and shot her own lightning at William. Clutching his chest, he fell in a heap, never to move again.
Marissa, who had been holding their crying child, now kneeled in shock before her passed husband. Ravana stood above her grinning, "I will be back for you and the child at sunrise" she allowed, wanting the mother to wallow in her pain. And like that, she was gone. Marissa took a moment to calm herself and the baby before running to the front door to try to escape but it was enchanted. There was no chance for outside help.
Composing herself, she lay the whining child back down in her crib and began to dig through her jewelry. She found a golden locket from the box and placed a picture of William and her holding the child right after her birth, and a note on the back explaining how much she is loved in hope that she will never forget them. She clasped the locket around the girl's neck and cradled her, knowing it may be her last moments.
With the first beam of sunlight to break over the horizon, Ravana materialized in the bedroom, "The child!" she demanded, outstretching her hand.
Marissa held the child tighter, "What will you do to her?"
"That is not of your concern" she reached for the baby, but Marissa took a step back.
"You must promise to never bring her harm."
"And why would I do that?" Ravana spat
"Cause she is only a child, she doesn't deserve this" Marissa cried, tears creating a flowing stream down her flushed cheeks.
Ravana looked into the baby's eyes, the same green eyes as William, her cold heart softening just for a moment. She grit her teeth"The child shall live and be cared for, but as for you..." she snatched the baby from Marissa's arms. A final glimpse of her child was the only thing she held onto before she too was killed.
Ravana fled into the night, baby in tow.
She built a tower deep in the woods of Alaska where they would never be found and called the child Rapunzel, like the flowers that bloomed around the tower. Ravana, although, could not hide from the Caster court who heard of her murder of William's family. They stripped her of her power and status, causing her to fall into deep despair. Her life as a Caster was all she had known, and would refuse to live as anything less. One night, she noticed the exponential growth of Rapunzel's hair; it pulsed with magic. Ravana took to old and dark magic, finding a spell for which she could use to drain the magic from Rapunzel for her own use. All she had to do was brush her golden locks to refuel herself with the power which was untouched by Rapunzel herself.
With the leached magic, she hid the tower from the knowledge of the council, who also had assumed the destruction of the child. No one knew of their position hidden in the woods, or the survival of Rapunzel.
