Felix:
The fire crackled to the background of the chirps of innumerable crickets and hoots of owls as we roast hot dogs over the open flame. "This was possibly one of the best days of my life." I say with a mouth full.
"Glad you're happy, man." Alex says trying to suppress the flames caught on his hot dog, then goes ahead and eats it right off the stick, "What should we do tomorrow?"
I think of all the possibilities "I don't know, you're the 'camping expert', what do you suggest?" I stare off into the woods.
"Well," he gobbles down the rest of his dinner, "we could go hiking, fishing, sleep, whatever you want man." He grabs another hot dog from the cooler and stabs it onto his stick.
I look at him for a second, "Are you okay?" I ask.
"Huh, yeah, just a little tired." He wipes his eye with the back of his hand as his next hot dog burst into flames.
"Not having Nat withdrawal are you, already?" I kid, trying to lighten the mood.
He smiles at her name, "You owe me for throwing me under the bus earlier." He waves his stick back and forth to put out his hot dog flames.
"Why?" I ask, "She was fine with it, she still loves you back." I mock, laughing at the blush spreading across his cheekbones.
Alex met Natasha on the class trip to DC, in the Air and Space Smithsonian. They noticed each other across the museum and you could tell when they first talked to each other they were in love. I excused myself so he could have some alone time with her. They spent the rest of the time in the museum talking on an atrium bench. It was true love, but they lived hundreds of miles apart. They were desperate to stay in contact, they called and texted and messaged each other every day since.
"When are you going to get a girl?" He asks abruptly, all my thoughts crashing.
"What?" I ask pretending not to hear him the first time. I take a big bite of my hot dog so my mouth was full.
"You did date Jessica a while back, didn't you?" He presses. I chew my mouth of food slowly, stalling. "Come on, man." He slaps my back and whatever was left in my mouth spews into the fire.
"Dude!" I push him off the log but all he can do is laugh. "Yeah, Jess and I dated for a while but that was, like, sophomore year." I stare at the smoldering remains of my hot dog in the fire.
"What happened exactly?" He inquires, "You never really explained at the time,"
I shrug, "I don't really know, we both kinda just agreed it wasn't working out so 'why drag it on any longer'?" I reiterate Jess's words the day we broke it off over the phone.
"God, that's tough." He pauses, "Hey, maybe I can hook you up with one of Natasha's friends." He pokes his stick at my chest.
I sigh, "No offence, but I wouldn't really want a long distance girlfriend, at least one I've never met." I cover up, "Plus even if I get a girlfriend at our school, we're all splitting up to go to college the next year so what's really the point?"
"Being happy." He states simply, "and by the way, long distance relationships are great," He says defensively, "it makes it all the more special when you do see each other." He fake pouts.
I let out a chuckle, "I know, you and Nat are perfect." I admit.
"Thanks." He sighs, "Well I'm turning in, I didn't get a nap on the way here like some people" He shoots me a glance as he walks towards the tent.
"I'll be in in a sec, I'll put the fire out." I call to Alex through the dark.
"Kay, just make sure you don't hog all the blankets tonight, it can get kinda cold up here" He adds before ducking into the tent.
I pour a bucket of water from the stream onto the fire; it sizzles and pops until I'm encompassed by the darkness. Every sound seems louder as I try to quietly walk over to the tent. I step inside and make sure that the doorway is secure, well, as secure a piece of plastic and a zipper could be. My head hits the pillow and I'm out like a light.
