Chapter 6 - On the trail
The assassin told them enough. They didn't have the exact identity of his employer, but he said he knew someone who would. That was their next lead.
After clearing it up with the commissioner, the three got in a car supplied to them.
"Just take the highway. Fastest way to get there." Seth says, going on his phone.
The ride is mostly silent, except for the radio playing faintly.
"So... Why is she driving? Aren't you like... Her bodyguard?" Seth asked, leaning forward.
E sinks down in their chair, "I... I can't drive." They mumble, making the assassin chuckle.
"What, you some shitty teen detective or something?" He asks them.
"I-" "He's a criminal." Lily states bluntly.
Seth laughs, "Wow! The cops must have low standards for this kind of stuff." He says, leaning back, "Shitty bodyguard...".
"I'm not a fuckin' bodyguard! I'm just... Protecting her temporarily until we get this shit figured out."
Meanwhile, E was flustered. They're obviously stressed out with this conversation
"Then if he's not a cop or bodyguard... Is he like your boyfriend-"
"Can you stop asking questions and just tell us where we need to go?!" E snaps at him, his face red with both embarrassment and anger.
"Fine fine! We get off here." Seth says, pointing out the exit.
They drive off the highway and into a shifty looking neighborhood of warehouses.
Lily looks around, "Is this where they'll be?" "Yep. I got the poison from them and did all the dirty work.".
They park at the first building and began to walk, Seth going first as the two trail behind him.
Lily inches over to E, "So... You're... Just E right?" She asks.
They look at her strangely, "Yes? I told you at the cafe, I'm just-" "Then why's a name scratched out on that?" She asks, point at his chest.
She was referring to E's dog tag. There, the name was scratched out and scratched in the letter E.
Quickly, they cover it up with their hands, "No reason, just drop it."
She chuckles, "Why, are you like... Some government experiment or somethi-" "I said, drop it." E says, glaring.
Lily backs off a little, "Jeez, it was just a question-" "And I prefer not to answer." E
Seth whistles at them, "Hey detectives. We're here.".
They've stopped at one warehouse. It was more run down than the others, but it was obvious it was in use from the sounds inside.
"Wow, abandoned warehouse base cliche." Lily mutters under her breath.
"Let me go in and I'll talk to my friend." Seth says as he reaches for the door handle.
E grabs his wrist, "No no no, we're not idiots... We're coming in with you-" "Wait, we are?"
They nod, "Obviously, either this is a trap or he's just trying to escape. Basic principles to this kind of stuff."
"Okay okay... But be careful, this place is practically a minefield." He says as he opens the door.
Inside is about a dozen cars. All taken apart and put off to the side. The floor was littered with tools and car parts.
Across the room was a work station, currently being occupied by a young elfish boy. His hair messily brushed back, held back by a bandana as he works on a strange looking object.
"Fawkes! We got company!" Seth shouts as he strides across the room.
The elven boy looks up and panics, picking up the wrench to the side and chucking it across the room.
Seth catches it with ease, "... Okay bad response."
"Who the hell are these guys?!" He shouts, holding a screwdriver like he's ready to stab the intruders the first chance he gets.
E waves, "Hi, I'm E. Just E, don't ask. We're here about your employer? Or his employer? I don't remember why we're here actually-"
"What he's trying to say is... We're looking for the guy who's trying to kill me." Lily interrupts.
Fawkes puts down his screwdriver, "Oh them? Christ, okay...Come on over. I'll fill you in as I work."
The three crowd around the work table, taking time to examine the machine. It looks like a strange looking weapon, with a glowing canister on the inside. It's rather impractical looking, but looks very deadly.
"So... You want to know about the guy?" He asks, taking the wrench from Seth to tighten the side of it.
"No we're here to ask about whatever the hell this thing is." E says sarcastically, pointing at the weapon.
"Oh, this is the P-" "He was kidding, dude. I don't want to hear you ramble about your dad's invention. Again." Seth interrupts.
Fawkes nods, "Right... Well they're called the Black Raven. No one knows what they look like but they're like this... Warlock crime boss of this group called The Roost. And like, one of their goons came to me after I was... Borrowing a car."
"And borrowing means stealing, right?" "Shhh, let him speak." Lily shushes E.
"So they gave me a file with the target and said "just kill him with your poison" or whatever... And I was busy so I told Seth to do it." He says, taking a file from another table and tossing it to Lily.
She catches it and opens it, reading it over. The file had everything about her, which was uncommon since there wasn't much known to the public.
"Spooky." E mutters, Lily shushing him again before asking, "And that's it? They just asked to kill me?"
"Well, they said they'd be in touch but-"
Just then, a knock echoed through the room.
"Faegan! Angelo! Open up! This is the Roost! We need to talk!"
