Chapter 4 - Getting to know you

Later that day, the two teenagers were brought to a cafe.

It was nothing special, just a quiet little place for them to talk.

However, this only increased the awkward tension.

Silence flooded the space between the two of them.

E was hesitant to speak. They've learned that she hates warlocks, so she'd surely hate them.

Lily was hesitant to speak to him as well. How would she get along with this... Thing?

She fidgets with her necklace, meanwhile still using her magic sense to scan the criminal.

Still the same uncontainable aura.

Purple and black. What did that mean again?

Few wizards in the room proved to be normal, but this person was obviously different.

"So, that's a nice necklace." E breaks the silence, pointing at it meekly.

She flinches at his comment, "Oh... Thanks, I got it from my mom." She mutters.

"Nice... I uh... I wish my mom left me something that cool.". That was probably a weird thing to comment.

Surely this conversation seemed like a failure.

"Guess we have something in common after all." "Probably not the best thing to have in common really."

The two feel a laugh rise out of them. Although the subject is grim, they find comfort in the tension disappearing.

"So... My dad said your name is... E?" She asks.

E chuckles, "Yeah I know, it's just a letter. But really, it's my actual name."

She nods, "Huh... Well then... E... I'm sorry about earlier. I'm just not used to being around warlocks."

"Oh no, you don't need to apologize. I understand I'm... Unliked by many." They say, laughing hesitantly.

Lily rolled her eyes, "I've noticed..." She mutters.

E frowns, "Right..."

And then the tension crept back in.

"Look, you don't actually HAVE to protect me." Lily states, "I can handle myself. You can just... Be there so my dad doesn't get on our case.".

They laugh, "I don't think I even could if I had to. I mean, I can barely handle my powers."

"Really? Because by the look on that guy, I think you can handle it well-"

"Hey, I didn't mean to..." E leans forward, "I didn't want to kill him." He whispers.

Lily leans toward them, "Well... Just try not to kill people-" "It's harder than it looks." They hiss at her.

"Excuse me?-" The two lean back as they look at the waiter, who despite hearing part of their conversation is smiling at the two magic users.

"Sorry to disturb but... Here's your drinks." He says, setting them down before walking off, fixing his dark brown hair bun as he goes.

The two exchange glances, "Did you order anything?" She asked them.

"No, I don't have money. And I'm guessing you didn't so..." E mumbles.

Lily picks up the drink, gripping onto her necklace as she taps into her magic sense.

The drink suddenly grows with a sickeningly green aura.

"Poison." She whispers.

E, who had just picked up their drink to take a sip, quickly puts it down and stands, "We need to leave."

The girl nods as the two make a beeline for the door. Only for the glass door to shatter as a bullet smashes into it. Just missing the two by a foot or so.

Screams rise from the patrons, panic spreads through the room.

They turn to the shooter, seeing the waiter stands with a gun in his hand. The smile has been replaced with a scowl of annoyance

"You're not going anywhere."
