Chapter 16: Baby Mockingjay is Back! (Prim)
I'm not dead. Somehow the bullet didn't kill me. Somehow I'm sitting in bed as Johanna steals my morphling.
"I've been taking some while the doctors weren't watching," she tells me blatantly, "they think I'll be addicted like those from 6 and cut me off, hope you don't mind."
"I don't mind, you can have as much as you want," I say. She's back from being tortured at the Capitol. Of course I don't mind.
Johanna grins and hooks herself up, sighing when the morphling enters her body.
"Maybe 6 isn't a bad life, drugging yourself to be happy and painting flowers on your skin," she says. It reminds me of the morphlings from 6. I shudder, thinking Johanna may become like one of them. After a second she adds, "I'm just joking."
"But you know what's really funny? The doctor tells me about twenty times a day, you're totally safe."
We laugh.
"How about you, Baby Mockingjay, feeling totally safe?"
Down here I'm a Baby Mockingjay!
"I did until I was shot," I laugh.
"Oh please, it didn't even touch you. Credits to Cinna."
"I feel like I'm really hurt though, almost like I lost an organ. Or broke a rib."
"Accurate much, little medic...Bruised ribs and you lost your spleen. They think it doesn't matter though, and if they did, they'd get one for ya."
"Is that why you hate me so much?"
"Jealously? That's part of it...Then there's your game act, pretending to be all innocent and pure, except that it isn't an act. Feel free to take this personally."
"You should be the mockingjay," I tell her with a small smile, "you have all the lines."
"That would be nice, but no one likes me."
"But they trusted you to get me out of the arena. And they seem to fear you. That's respect isn't it?"
She just sighs and tilts her head towards the door. "Mister back-from-the-dead is here, I better go." She detaches herself from the morphling and hooks me up.
"Noah!" I exclaim when I see him at the door. "How's Rory?"
"Not so great," he says, "the relapses are pretty bad. He can't remember some things, almost like he's starting to get amnesia, and he's gone a bit...delusional. Getting worse, they say."
"Oh no..."
For a second he lingers at the door but then decides to come in. "Mind if I climb in?"
He just came back from the dead, I don't mind. "Nah."
"You're not gonna ask how I am?"
"Aha, well, how are you?" I ask.
"Great, thanks for asking."
He puts his arm around my shoulder.
We talk about the old tributes and I can't help but smile. We laugh a lot and we get along pretty well considering that he 'died' and I just got shot the other day. It hurts to laugh and I hold my stomach, and so eventually he has to leave.
"Everyone thinks you're dead. It's time to show them you're not."
Cressida and her team file in and I'm so happy to see them. I show off my stitches and bruises, saying that the districts are all united now, and that the Capitol better watch out. It's short but get's me back into my Mockingjay routine. Baby Mockingjay is coming back!
I take short walks everyday for my rehabilitation. One day, Plutarch decides to join me.
"Now that we have Two, the Capitol is completely on it's own. No help, just panem et circuses."
"What's that?" I ask.
"It comes from an old language called Latin, dead long before the Dark Days. It means...you just have food and entertainment, but lose political responsibilities and power."
"Seems like what's happening now."
"It does, doesn't it?" he says with a light chuckle. "We have all the food and we're about to be a huge hit with the upcoming wedding."
"Katniss is getting married?!"
"No! For Finnick and Annie. It's going to be wonderful. All you need to do is pretend to be happy."
"Don't worry, I won't need to pretend."
Coin and Plutarch have a huge argument about the wedding. To Coin, a wedding means signing a paper and moving compartments. To Plutarch, a wedding means a three-day celebration with dresses, decoration and everything. It's almost entertaining to watch them go back and forth, fighting for their own cause. The rest of us just watch as they go back and forth, like watching an intense tennis match.
The wedding is going to be a small celebration. But even the smallest celebration can cause a flurry of excitement here in Thirteen where they don't even have holidays. Children are needed to sing the District 4 wedding song and pretty much every kid comes. There is no shortage of volunteers for decorations, and people buzz with excitement wherever I go. I guess they all want to take part in this special occasion. Even Katniss volunteers to take Annie back to District 12 where she can get some of her old dresses from the victory tour. Sometimes I forget she was even on that tour; she wasn't considered a victor for the quell. I guess the Capitol get's to determine all that, and Snow wanted me dead. I sigh as I walk over to Rory's, stopping once in a while to clutch my side. When I get to Rory's room, he's all shaking and sweating, panting hard as his eyes look around him in fear. When I approach him he tries to tackle me at first, but then tells me in a trembling voice, "Go away! I'm a monster!"
I almost cry. I can't believe I'm losing him just when I thought we could have some sort of future together. I tell him I love him even though he doesn't understand. I rush out of the room and sleep in my room until the wedding.
Here's the deal. Coin thinks the wedding's too fancy. Plutarch thinks it's too boring. But I think it's a smash hit.
200 lucky citizens of Thirteen and most of the refugees from Twelve are invited, as well as a children choir and a fiddler who made it out of Twelve with his instrument. For a moment I think of me in his situation. I decide I like my life now no matter how complicated. It is my life after all.
Annie comes in a green, silk dress that Katniss wore in Four. It looks beautiful on her. Finnick's in one of Peeta's suits that's been altered to match his tall and lean body. Everything is going awesome!
The wedding is led by none other than Haymitch. I have no idea how they got him in a suit but it happened. I almost want to laugh, falling to the ground, but I decided not to after thinking about a chip in my head. Haymitch 24/7, yuck!
The wedding has a lot of nice touches from Four. A net is draped over the two while they say their vow, they put salt water on each other's lips, and of course, there's the music from Four that adds just the right amount of "sea voyage" to make it feel like home for the two. In the end they kiss and everyone cheers. The fiddler strikes a tune.
Twelve may be the smallest and poorest district. But were proud to say we know how to dance. Peeta grabs Katniss and the two start dancing, and everyone starts joining in. I smile and clap along but I someone grabs me by the shoulder. Johanna.
"Do you want to miss your one chance of letting Snow see ya dance?"
I know she's right. I head over to Noah.
"May I have this dance?" I ask him. He smiles, a kind smile, unlike Rory's smirk. It's different but I still like it. He agrees and we dance. One, two, three, one, two, three.
"Not so bad!" he tells me over the music.
"And you're not so bad yourself," I reply. I let out a laugh as he twirls me around. We dance for a while and it's a nice time. I think he kissed me on the cheek once but I'm not entirely sure.
"I meant everything," he tells me.
"What?"
"I meant everything."
"Yeah I heard you but...what?"
"In the arena before I died. I meant everything."
"...oh."
"Every single word."
"...oh."
After that we just kind of went quiet and I tore myself away from the guy to go find Katniss. I owe her a dance. We get together and I have a blast. It's quiet and reminds me of when we used to dance together, late at night when we were younger. Me on her toes as we danced around the living room, candles illuminating the small house...Dancing with her, I feel 7 years old again. Just me and her, not a care in the world.
A cake is brought it, with four tiers...for District 4 maybe?
[Most of the guests back up, making way for this rarity, this dazzling creation with blue-green, white-tipped icing waves swimming with fish and sailboats, seals and sea flowers.] (page 227 lines 26 through 29)
It's obvious that it's Peeta's work. Amazing. I can't believe how much stuff that guy has been doing. First the rescue mission, now a huge masterpiece cake. Everyone loves it. I'm admiring his work when Haymitch finds me, and yes he's still in a suit. I stifle a laugh. He pretends not to notice.
"We have to go, now. It's Rory."
We rush out and head for the hospital that I know so well.
"What's happening?" I ask. He doesn't need to answer. We get to a glass room and he's strapped to a board, screaming. Rory...
~A/N~ Don't panic, I know I repeated Prim. It's Mockingjay: Prim after all, and I will be writing less and less Rory chapters. Enjoy them while they're there :)
Q: Isn't it so much more satisfying to binge read on Wattpad than binge watch videos on Youtube? I totally think so... it's much more exciting too!!
