A Mockingjay after a War

"The next time I saw her, the war was over. My orders were to keep President Snow alive until his execution. All commanders were up to date on the Mockingjay. Most of us were aware of the sinister things that had happened. She stood at the doors to Snow's private quarters. My guards were under orders to allow no one to enter except those on our list.

"Standing before me stood Soldier Katniss Everdeen. If I was concerned about her when I first saw her, now I couldn't believe she was alive. She wasn't really. She was just a smashed moving body. She was a mute, badly burned seventeen year old girl. Now her eyes, her manner and her general haphazard look were something I've seen before. Severe shock. She was a moving body waiting to die. The walking dead. Death seemed their only escape to relieve their horrors. It was reported she had not spoken a word since being burned in the Palace Square while watching her sister murdered.

"I knew we wouldn't be standing at that door if it not for her. I let her enter, after a few minutes she returned holding a white rose bud. I asked her if she found what she was looking for. She held up the bud and literally stumbled away. She's gone I thought. Time was the only hope for her and only if she didn't die first. The price she paid to get that rosebud was extreme.

"I was told by President Coin I was to be charged with treason and dismissed for dereliction of duty for having allowed Katniss Everdeen in Snow's private chambers. I was ordered to enter my observations of her physical condition in my daily log. Those charges were never filed. The Mockingjay was not done. The next day she changed our lives again. My log was entered into evidence at Katniss Everdeen's trail. I have often wondered about her condition in the years since. Was she far more aware of what was really happening and struggling with a decision she was about to make?

"There are many great people on our National Treasure list. Katniss Everdeen's name will never move from that number one spot. In just two years she changed an entire country. She saved it not once, but twice from tyrants. If you wish to find out about only one of these great people, read or watch her story.

"Thank you to everyone connected with this ongoing project, especially to National Education Director Lyme and her amazing research teams. Never Forget."
