2.26 The Mob Character Is A False Magician
Jin Wei worked on some strategies to meet the protagonist again.
Laurem served as a mentor at the prestigious academy. To reconnect with him, Jin Wei had to find a way to enroll in the same institution. And to make this happen, Jin Wei needed to enter the academy. Unfortunately, gaining access was no easy task since the School of Solomon strictly enforced its credit-based system. Admission was granted solely based on an individual's exceptional credit score, regardless of their wealth or financial status.
The credit-based system is divided into two categories: Class A Credit and Class B Credit.
Class A Credit is awarded to students who successfully pass the Magician's preliminary test. This test is no walk in the park. It evaluates students' aptitude by assessing their mana emission, control, and endurance. The final portion of the test involves an obstacle race where students must battle their fellow magicians while navigating through the field.
It is widely known that out of the thousand applicants each year, only ten percent manage to pass the test. Amongst this small group, only a few students are considered truly exceptional, while the rest just scrape by, barely meeting the passing criteria.
On the flip side, Class B Credit is granted to students who excel in theoretical knowledge.
Among these students are magicians with low natural affinity for mana, but possess remarkable intellect when it comes to comprehending its intricacies. They have the ability to harmonize magic with various elements, whether it be machines or concepts. Obtaining Class B Credit is more challenging than earning Class A Credit, as it requires a high level of intelligence in this domain.
For students who did not achieve Class A Credit, there was an opportunity to attempt the Class B Credit examination. However, one should not anticipate an easy passage. The Class B Credit exam consists of twenty core subjects, each worth a hundred points. To meet the minimum passing criteria, a flawless score must be attained in fifteen subjects, while the remaining five subjects require a score above the minimum threshold.
The Class B Credit examination is highly competitive, with a maximum acceptance rate of only twenty students per year. In some instances, there have been years when no students were admitted, leaving the Class B Credit department vacant for an entire academic year.
The school's credit systems signify that anyone who meets the qualifications can enroll, including ordinary humans. However, due to their weaker constitution, they are often marginalized and left with little ability to defend themselves. This dynamic creates an environment where the school appears to cater exclusively to magicians.
Jin Wei, despite being human, is confident that he can achieve Class B Credit. Although he lacks the standard education of this world, he possesses a strong understanding of the theoretical aspects. Having traveled to numerous worlds, his knowledge is not lacking.
He can approach the academy and request an opportunity to take the exam. On certain occasions, the school conducts special exams for individuals with unique circumstances. While this flexibility is considered reasonable, some view it with disapproval, as it can be seen as an "opening of the backdoor."
Nevertheless, it is preferable to unveil hidden potential rather than let talent go to waste.
Jin Wei's initial idea is to enroll as a student. By becoming a student, he could effortlessly engage in daily tasks without arousing suspicion. It's normal for students to greet their teachers with a friendly "hello" or "good morning." Moreover, being a student would provide him with opportunities to get closer to the protagonist in case any additional tasks were assigned by the system.
However... Isn't he a bit too old to become a student?
He glanced at his twenty-two-year-old self. While twenty-two is still considered young considering the world's average life expectancy, he is older compared to the students at the school.
"Wouldn't I look more like a teacher than a student?" Jin Wei pondered.
He had no doubts about being accepted; it would merely involve answering the questions correctly. However, his age seemed inappropriate. Although there were older students, they had started their studies at the school when they were younger and were now in their final years. A guy of twenty-two would undoubtedly stand out.
As Jin Wei contemplated, he pondered the protagonist's early completion of school. Typically, the school's main applicants began at the age of fifteen, as their magical abilities were most unstable during this time. But here was the protagonist, finishing studies while others were just starting! Who had blessed him with such a fortunate life?
Well, it was clear that the protagonist was admitted due to Laurem's exceptional magical talent showing at an early age. Only a select few were granted the opportunity to begin learning magic like him.
Jin Wei dismissed the idea of becoming a student. So, what about becoming an employee? If he were to submit an application, what position could he possibly obtain? A mentor? A staff member? However, he wondered if the school even accepted additional staff members.
The outcome would be quite different. If an ordinary person were to apply, the school would not admit them. The academy exclusively sought out individuals of genius caliber and expected employees who could uphold that standard. However, if we're talking about JIN WEI, then the academy would open its gates wide and even display a banner to warmly welcome him.
But who is Jin Wei?
He is none other than the Patriarch of the Jin Clan, a position that holds significant status in this society. His influence is far from insignificant. With a mere gesture of his hand, he can sway the direction of the world's economy. Considering his standing, wouldn't it be a small feat for him to become a mentor at that school?
The Dean was actually keen on inviting him for an open session to inspire students and share his wisdom about the science of magical medicine. By creating miraculous medicines, he had the power to transform the world, benefiting not only the impoverished but also those with limited access to healing resources. His very existence had increased the overall survival rate of the entire world by an astounding seventy-five percent.
What could possibly define a genius if not this?
However, this individual declines every request that involves their presence or any form of social interaction. It's not a matter of shyness or secrecy, but rather a sheer aversion to dealing with such extraneous matters due to his inherent laziness.
Therefore, rather than engaging in mere speculation, he ventured out to seek information. His destination was a small pub nestled within a dimly lit alley, located in the same town where he encountered the protagonist. This pub remained concealed from the general public, attracting individuals who sought to exchange information, goods, or partake in secretive dealings.
The information obtained within this establishment was, for the most part, trustworthy.
As mid-afternoon approached, Jin Wei pushed open the doors of the pub. Only a handful of individuals occupied the establishment, leaving most of the round wooden chairs unoccupied. The quiet murmurs temporarily ceased upon his entrance, but quickly resumed as the regular patrons recognized him. Jin Wei paid no mind to the curious gazes directed his way and made his way towards the bar counter.
The bar emanated an aura of simplicity, with every aspect carefully crafted from the rustic charm of hardwood. From the walls to the flooring, the ceiling, and even the bar counter, the warm and inviting ambiance embraced the patrons.
The gentle glow of the lights illuminated the space, accompanied by the soothing melodies of bards strumming their instruments and humming songs in the corner. The harmonious symphony of sounds blended with the clinking of cutlery as people enjoyed their meals, creating an atmosphere that enticed visitors to return for good food and drinks.
However, it was this unassuming simplicity that created a relaxed and inviting atmosphere. No one would suspect that a place like this was involved in any shady dealings.
Jin Wei strolled leisurely, exchanging casual greetings with familiar faces and taking notice of the newcomers. As he approached the counter, he settled onto an unoccupied barstool, facing the bartender who meticulously polished a wine glass. Their eyes met briefly, a silent understanding passing between them, before the bartender nodded.
Setting the glass aside on the underbar, the bartender gracefully retrieved several bottles from the shelves adorned with an array of liquors tucked away in the back. Jin Wei observed intently as the bartender deftly uncorked and poured small amounts of vibrantly colored liquids into a silver metal cup, proceeding to execute a masterful display of shaking.
Once satisfied with the shaking ritual, the bartender skillfully poured the concoction into a Pilsner glass. The drink possessed a mesmerizing, translucent minty green hue, teasing the eye as it danced amidst the ice cubes, artfully garnished with a sprig of mint. Placing the enticing creation on the counter, the bartender gently slid the glass towards Jin Wei.
"Hey, if it isn't boss Jin."
As Jin Wei savored a sip from his drink, an unfamiliar face suddenly occupied the chair next to him. This stranger possessed a youthful countenance, with captivating peach blossom eyes that had a subtle slant. Whiskers adorned his cheeks, and a noticeable tail gracefully swayed behind him, hinting at his feline lineage revealed by the color of his irises.
The fellow's name is Milo, an informant.
