Chapter 8: Lovely Evening
Instead of voyaging more, Moana felt that she was done for today after what happened with Kakamora. She sighed deeply as she watched the villagers happily planting more nectarines and pineapples. She stretched and lied down.
"Well well well, is chief of Motunui tired?" Maui walked up and looked down at her.
"A little bit," Moana yawned, "oh I never felt so tired before. I hope that they don't come back to us." Moana became a little bit more worried.
"Don't worry about them anymore," Maui comforted her, "I believe we scared them too much for them to come back to us. If they do, I got more ways to beat them." Maui winked. Moana smiled. "Hey, curly, wanna catch some air with me?" Maui let out his hand. Moana smiled and grabbed his hand so that Maui can lift her. She wrapped herself around Maui's arm. Maui felt his heart beating in excitement, but he decided to stay calm and say, "You're gonna walk like this?"
"Yes, I want to," Moana replied sweetly. "We won't have a lot of chance to be together like this in this island. You know, we must keep this relationship thing secret or my life of being a chief would be questioned."
Maui chuckled and started to walk. He first headed to the shore. "You know, I've been in Motunui for so long, and I still find this island very interesting. It seems like I'm discovering a lot of new and different things everyday."
"When I was younger, I always came to the sea, no matter how much my parents pulled me away and scolded me when I suggested that we should go out to the reef," Moana said as she looked at the ocean.
"Well, they must be proud of you now," Maui said, "you reminded your people who they are supposed to be after restoring Te Fiti's heart."
Moana snickered. Then she let loose of Maui's arm and sat on the boat to soak her feet in the water. She snickered more as she slightly kicked the water. Maui sat next to her, but a little bit apart. The ocean pushed them together. Maui blushed a little and Moana laughed as she gently put her hand over her mouth. Instead of having a lovely and romantic conversation with each other, they silently sat for a while. Moana only kept playing with the water as the waves rushed below her feet. Then she sighed and said, "Oh, I remember my grandma. She and I used to dance with the water."
"I see," Maui replied, "what happened to her?"
"She passed away," Moana said. Now that she's used to it, she didn't feel any difference, she moved on. But Maui still felt guilty asking that question.
"Oh, sorry I asked," Maui apologized.
"It's fine. I moved on." The manta rays came beneath their feet. She slightly hopped out and let the manta rays swim around her. "She's one of them now." Maui didn't understand her, but he still smirked. "Well, let's go around the village. I still gotta watch people frequently."
"Alright, chief of Motunui," he hopped out of the boat and followed her.
Moana and Maui walked around the village to check on people. They seem to have a pleasant break after planting the bananas and nectarines, hunting, and fishing. As they both continued to walk around the village. Moana heard some whimpering, wincing, and shrieking from one of the hut. They were putting tattoos on their backs. She walked over to them. "That must hurt."
"Ow, ow, OW!" one of them shrieked the loudest.
"It's okay, you're almost there!" Moana encouraged, but the tattoo wasn't even close to being finished.
Maui stepped right next to Moana. The man who was getting the tattoo watched Maui's tattoo. "How did you manage to deal with your pain of getting your tattoo?"
"It just appears. I'm a demigod, remember?" Maui said.
"Aww... lucky- ow, ow, ow, OW!" He yelped as the sharp stone poked against his skin.
"Well, good luck, you'll be used to the pain anytime soon," she stood up, "Let's go check on the others."
"You're too fickle," Maui complained.
"Get up," Moana nagged. Maui jumped up.
"So where are we going now, chief of Motunui?" Maui asked.
"Just get up and follow me!" Moana walked away. Maui quickly got up chased her.
When he caught up to her, he asked one more time, "So where are we going now, chief of Motunui?"
"In the woods, just wanted to spend time with you more before I continue to do my chief of Motunui's works again," Moana said as she stepped towards the woods. "We'll be back before dinner time," Moana reminded him. Maui smirked. "When you flew around here, I wanted to go in. It was pretty interesting to see how there can be a cozy place to rest in this island surrounded by the ocean."
"Were you? Glad I took you on the flight." As they both stepped into the woods, the cool breeze caressed them as the continued to walk forward. "Ah, it feels so good!"
"It's much cooler in here," Moana was amazed of how cool it can be. "I wonder if my villagers know about this."
"You know, Moana, if you show every place in this island, we wouldn't have any place to go out in secret." Maui said.
"But I can't hide anything to my villagers," Moana replied modestly. "Plus, they wouldn't even visit when there's no goods or it's not a good resting place."
"What a sly person you are," Maui chuckled.
Moana looked around and watched the breeze blow on the leaves. She inhaled deeply, then breathed it all out. "Ah, this feels so nice. I wish I can this breeze all the time."
Her hair and her dress fluttered in a breeze. Looking at this made Maui's heart beat faster. Wow, Maui thought, Look at her, she's such a goddess. Maui let out a deep sigh.
"Is something wrong, Maui?" Moana asked as she heard him sigh.
"Huh?" Maui snapped out of it.
"You just sighed, so I was wondering what was wrong. Is everything okay?" Moana asked once more.
"Oh, I just sighed because the breeze was very relaxing," Maui replied as he quickly came up with an excuse.
"I see," Moana smiled without feeling any suspicion, "I guess we feel the same way."
Maui admired her looks again. Ah, why is she so pretty? I still can't believe mortals can be attractive enough to captivate demigod like myself. Then he felt something wrapping around his arm. It was Moana. His heart was beating faster, and his cheek started to be warmer. "What is it?" Maui asked again calmly.
"It's time for dinner," Moana said, "let's go back."
Maui looked around, "Hold on, where did we come out?"
"This is why I kept track of where we came from," Moana pointed at the little rocks.
"Since when did you do this?" Maui was surprised and impressed.
"As a chief of Motunui, I always think ahead and keep track of everything. Let's go!" Moana followed the track of little rocks. Maui smirked and followed her.
When they reached Moana's hut, their dinner was already ready.
"Good evening, Moana, did you have fun in the afternoon?" Sina asked as she handed out the bowl to Moana and Maui.
"Oh yes," Moana said with such excitement.
"I'm proud of you Moana," Tui complemented, "so many people are happy about more nectarines and pineapples."
"Thank Maui for the pineapples, dad," Moana needed to give him some credit.
"Oh, Moana, you don't have to..." Maui scratched his head.
"Well, we can't thank you enough, Maui," Tui put his hand on Maui's shoulder.
Maui chuckled a little nervously. Then he heard whisper-like sound from behind, "Aaaaaaaahhhhhhh! Mau-i! Mau-i! Mau-iiiiiii! You're so amazing!" It was Moana. As she whispered from behind, the tattoos of people cheered for Mini Maui.
Maui snickered and resumed eating. "Mmm, this beef and grain are really good," Maui savored the taste.
"I'm glad you like it," Moana was a little more than halfway done, "oh my, I'm full."
"But you didn't eat much," Sina looked at her bowl.
"I ate more than yesterday," Moana said.
"Well, Moana, I'm getting concerned about how less you eat nowadays," Sina said.
"After voyaging, I'm just exhausted. I'll get used to it," Moana replied.
"Hm, I don't want to throw any food away," Tui said as he finished his dish. "Oh my, I'm stuffed." Because Tui usually finished Moana's leftover food. He hated wasting food.
Then all of the sudden, Maui took the bowl from Moana and finished her food. "I was still hungry and no one seemed to want what you left."
"Well, problem solved," Tui said, "you know how much I hate wasting food."
"I know," Moana said. Then she whispered to Maui and whispered, "Thank you."
"You're welcome," Maui whispered back.
After dinner, Moana stepped outside the hut. As she was gazing and admiring the bright, orange sunset heard the footstep from behind. It was Maui. "Did you finish it?"
"Oh yes, what are you doing out here?" Maui asked.
"Just looking at the sunset. It is always beautiful in Motunui." Moana sat and looked at the sunset. "By the way, thanks for finishing my leftover meal. My dad really hates wasting food. I don't know I just can't stuff myself and I really need much energy."
"I understand you and your father," Maui said as he sat next to her.
"Maui, can we explore the woods a little bit more?" Moana asked.
"What? Again?" Maui asked. "Why not tomorrow?"
"Come on," Moana begged. "We don't have any labor to do today anymore since we collected resources from other island, and I want to rest!"
"I'm tired, kid," Maui said. "I won't be tired tomorrow."
"Pleeeeeeeaaaaaaase?" Moana requested so sweetly that Maui couldn't decline.
"Oh all right, I lost, let's go," Maui stood up. Moana gave him her hand so that Maui can lift her. Maui grabbed her hand and pulled her. But he seemed to pull her a little hard. She flew into Maui's chest. Both of their eyes widened. Moana quickly withdrew and organized her hair. Maui cleared his throat. "Shall we go?"
"Oh yes," Moana said as she tried to forget about the sudden awkwardness. So she held his hand and walked towards the woods. The longer they held hands, more comfortable they felt about each other. As they both stepped into the woods, the nice breeze blew on them. This made them feel better.
"Hey, Moana, look," he pointed at the rays of sunlight coming in from the opening of the trees, "the woods looks much more beautiful during the sunset."
"It does," Moana looked the rays. The orange light stood out to Moana. "We should come here more often. It has great atmosphere." Moana and Maui took a long nice walk through the woods. Moana saw something shining in the end of the woods. "Hey, what is that?" she chased the light.
"Moana! Wait for me!" Maui chased after her. She stopped. Is something wrong? Maui ran faster. Maybe he ran too fast... there was a cliff. He almost fell and he plopped down.
"Whoa, be careful, Maui," she said as Maui took a deep breath.
"Oh, gosh, you scared me! Is this why you stopped?" Maui caught his breath.
"Yes, but also, this view is so amazing! It's a totally different from the top of the hill where the stack of rocks are. The view from here is very unique!" In a distance, there was a small hill from a distance where the sun lied. The orange light was still glistening on the ocean surface. Moana sighed as she watched the ocean. Maui sighed after her. "Don't you think this view is beautiful?"
Maui looked at her as she said, "I think there is something more beautiful in my eyesight." Moana turned to Maui, who was looking at her very sweetly. That look was the warmest look Maui ever gave her. Her heart began to beat much faster. Maui leaned in slowly. His face became closer, and closer, and closer. Moana let her eyelids gently close. As her eyelids were completely shut, she felt something soft and warm on her lips. She never felt this sensation ever before.
This is... weird, but, oh, this feels really nice. Moana thought as Maui kissed her.
So this is what it feels like to kiss someone. Maui also thought as he kissed Moana. It was worth waiting for thousand years.
A/N: I know, this is the cheesiest chapter I've ever written in this fanfic, but I wanted to give Moana and Maui a very romantic moment because -SPOILERS- the real adventure start now. Starting from chapter 9, there's going to be a lot of actions, sure there is going to be some MoanaxMaui moments, but from there, majority of the plot will be related to adventure.
