Chapter 47: Maui the Demigod, Moana the Demigoddess

When her soul completely entered her body, Moana slowly began to open her eyes. She held her hands up to see if she was really alive, then she looked at her legs, then her waist, and then, Maui. Maui couldn't believe his eyes. He saw the miracle happening to him right before his eyes. Moana warmly smiled as Maui froze. "Hi, Maui."

"Moana..." Maui's voice cracked. No more words came out from his vocal chord no matter how much he tried. Moana opened her arms to allow Maui to hug her. Maui went straight to her quickly yet gently so that he wouldn't tackle Moana. "I'm so sorry..." Maui whispered into her ears as teardrop of joy landed warmly on her shoulder. Moana quietly and gently caressed his back to indicate that she forgave Maui. When they withdrew, she wiped tears off of Maui's cheek.

"How did this happen?" Moana asked as she continued to make eye contact with Maui.

"Your partner sacrificed his demigod status to revive you," Tala replied.

Moana turned where the voice came from. "Grandma? What are you doing here? What is this place? And what do you mean he sacrificed his demigod status?"

Tala listed, "First, I'm here to see you. Second, this is a spirit realm. Third, I needed his energy so that I can help your soul get enough strength to go back into your body."

"Is that true, Maui?" Moana asked as she turned to him. "Why did you do it?"

"You know, Chief," Maui said as he scratched his head. "I'd rather end my life with you on my side for the rest of my life than to live forever without you." After hearing that, Moana's eyes started to be teary. "Kid, no need to be overjoyed by this. We have things to take care of." He took out the charms and waved it.

"Oh," Moana was now very concerned. "Kapu'uila is too strong. I don't think we can take him down. Especially after you lost your demigod status."

"Well then, I should've revived you after defeating him," Maui snickered.

"Maui!" Moana snapped, a little angry, but that anger disappeared shortly after yelling.

"Kidding! So serious!" Maui laughed slightly.

"But what are we gonna do?" Moana asked. Maui shrugged. Tala smirked. "Grandma, do you know the answer?" She asked as she noticed her smirk.

"Maybe," she teasingly replied. "Why don't you ask the other gods?" She showed the side where the gods were all lined up. Few goddesses were standing before Moana, Maui, and Tala. Moana and Maui were stunned by the view that it took them a while to get their thoughts back together and bow down to all the gods. After having their heads down for a few moments, one goddess tapped on Maui's head to catch his attention.

"Pele!" Maui said as he looked up. Pele, the goddess of fire, had her hands on Maui. "It has been a while! How have you been?" Pele smiled back. Maui looked at the other three gods: Tane the god of the forest, Tangaroa the god of the seas, and Tawhiri the god of the wind and storms. Maui was so happy that he couldn't stop smiling. "Wow! All of you are here! I still remember the day all of you found me and turned me into a demigod!" Then he lost his smile. "I'm sorry, I'm not a demigod anymore. After all the trouble you've been through... but I really wanted to save Moana and... that happened... I'm sorry."

Pele, Tane, Tangaroa, and Tawhiri all looked at each other, then Maui, and smiled warmly. We're proud of you, Pele said through her mind.

We knew you'd do something very well to mortals, Tane added.

Working with a mortal is even more impressive, Tangaroa elaborated.

We shall give you and your mortal friend a special gift for being brave to save this world, Tawhiri smiled.

"A gift?" Maui asked.

All the gods smiled at each other to confirm. They created two blobs of light and let each one surround Moana and Maui. As the light surrounded them, they started to feel even more powerful. Maui knew what was going on, so he is used to the feeling. But to Moana, it was totally unusual. She felt much more energy and strength flowing throughout her body. She saw something light on her right hand. The spiral shape, that looks just like the spiral on her boat's sail, appeared on her right hand. Also, a flow of aura appeared in front of her, and then landed on one of her hand, formed a shape of an oar, and turned into a white oar with a lot of carvings of special shapes on it. "Whoa!" She breathed as she saw the miracle happening before her eyes.

Maui, you have regained your demigod status, Pele said.

And Moana, you earned your demigoddess status, Tane said.

"What? Really?" Moana asked in surprise.

Yes, you deserve it, Tangaroa said.

You are now Moana, demigoddess of ocean and land, Tawhiri said.

As Maui has his magical fish hook, you will have a magical oar, Tane said.

You'll have enough power to defeat your current enemy, Tangaroa said.

Now show that monster what you got! Pele said.

They all returned Moana and Maui back into the mortal realm. As Moana entered the mortal realm, she saw Pua, eyes opened wide with surprise and joy. He happily jumped into Moana's chest for a warm embrace. She even felt Pua crying in her chest. "Aww... Pua, it's okay. I'm alive and well! Sorry to make you worried. Don't you cry now." She felt a peck on her elbow. It was Heihei. "Come here, Heihei." They all embraced together. While Moana, Pua, and Heihei were having their moments of reunification, the sky started to rage again. So he came back... Moana thought. "Both of you, stay here. I want both of you to be safe. I love you." She gave a kiss on their foreheads and prepared herself to fight Kapu'uila.

"Ready, Moana?" Maui asked.

"Ready," Moana replied.

Kapu'uila came back with a bolt of lightning and thunder. The hammering fist tried to strike Moana again. Moana flinched and put her hand over her head. A bright forcefield protected the hammering impact. Instead, the impact gave him extreme pain instead. "Huh?" She looked at the forcefield. Then Kapu'uila. Then her hands. Then the disappearing forcefield. Then her hands again. "Whoa!" She breathed. "I wonder what else it can do." She held her new oar tightly and said, "Let's see what this got too!" She jumped into the ocean, but she landed on her foot, she was able to stand on it, and walk around on the surface as if the ocean was the ground. "Oh, sweet!" Moana said as she ran on the ocean surface. When Kapu'uila was about to strike her with his fist, she jumped into the water. The forcefield was created around her to protect herself from the electricity that was being spread out through the water. Because she needed to train herself more, she was not able to keep the forcefield for long so the forcefield disappeared while she was still in the water. Oh, I gotta go back up to the surface! While she panicked for a moment, she accidentally inhaled, but then she noticed something different. "Wait a minute... I can breathe in the water! Oh, this is sweet!" She hurried and swam back up, and realized how fast she was as soon as she hopped above the ocean surface. "And I swim so fast! I'm like a shark!"

"Take that!" Maui said as he chopped off both of his hands before he was hit by his arm. Kapu'uila screamed in pain like how Te Ka did when Maui chopped off her arms. But Kapu'uila still can use his head and headbutted Maui. As he fell, Moana brought the ocean stream up to catch him. "Chief! You saved me!" Maui said as he was caught by the ocean support.

"Yeah, and guess what?" Moana said. "I can swim fast, breathe in the water, create forcefield, and now I can control water! It's a matter of time before I can figure out what else I can do!"

"Let's get down to the surface and figure out another plan," Maui suggested.

"Now that's a good idea," Moana said with a mischievous smirk.

"Hey!" Maui exclaimed.

"Come on, we haven't got any time to waste!" Moana said as she made the path with the ocean down to the land and slid down there. "So, what's the plan?" She asked before Maui went landed. "Maui?"

"Chief, you're so fast after becoming a demigoddess!" Maui said as he landed. "So the plan... since you also have special powers, let's keep on striking. I've been noticing, he only stays at the place where there are so many clouds!"

"Maybe I can clear all the clouds?" Moana suggested. "At least all the big ones?"

"Sounds like a solid plan, Chief," Maui said.

"What can I say?" Moana said as she leaned on the tree, then she heard a voice.

He's in pain... he's unfairly judged... the voice said.

"Is tree trying to say something to me?" Moana asked herself as she withdrew. When she couldn't hear the voice, she touched the tree again. Just when she made contact with the tree, she heard the voice once more.

Please help him set things right... the tree communicated to her.

"Now I know that nature can speak to me when I touch it with my tattooed hand," Moana said to herself. "But what does it mean by he's in pain, unfairly judges, and help him set things right?"

"Let's figure it out as we go," Maui said as he pointed to Kapu'uila.

"We shall," Moana agreed. Maui transformed into a giant hawk, Moana made the path with the ocean and created extra stream to clear out some of the large chunks of clouds.

While Maui distracted as he called out to Kapu'uila to get his attention, "Hey, Kapu'uila! Sharkhead!"

As Kapu'uila was confused by Maui's appearance, Moana gave him a hard punch on his face with her tattooed hand. Moana gasped as she read his mind any emotions as she did with the tree she touched earlier:

Kapu'uila was a small orphan child and he was bullied by almost every single child in the village. Even after he was turned into a teenager, nothing has improved. No matter how much he begged for help from others, no one wanted to help him. They all turned their backs on him, and sometimes, threw something at him so that he can get away from them. Worse, when the night came, a group of boys, maybe men, gathered around to give him wounds and bruises every part of his body and walk away delightfully.

He decided to sail away from the island to avoid the daily close-mindedness and abuse, but with his lack of sailing skills, the merciless ocean wave swallowed him and his tiny boat. He eventually drowned and when he opened his eyes, he was lying down before every god. He gasped and bowed before them. He was then given the power of lightning as he became the demigod of lightning and sky. He was also given a special power to turn someone else into something special that they will not end up as the same fate as he did before he became a demigod.

He gave special powers to all the sixty-six people. He helped them get a better life, and he was hoping that at least one would join to become his team. But everyone has turned their back on him, making him remember every horrible and traumatizing thing that happened before he became a demigod. He screamed as he held his head and sobbed for a while. When his sobbing calmed down, his facial expression has changed. He realized if there is not a single person who would be there for him, then there is no point in trying to help others.

He started acting destructively as he turned everyone he helped into a monster that went around the island after island and destroyed everything in sight. While he was also destroying some civilizations, he was caught by all the gods and was imprisoned on the spot. Since the ultimate was cursed to have the same destiny, they were also imprisoned.

He had his own prison cell where he sat in anxiety, despair, depression, fury, and resentment until he found a way to escape the prison cell and release everyone from the prison and destroy the world once more.

When the image ended in her head, she heard Kapu'uila's voice. She knew it was his voice. Why... why do I have to go through this...? I only wanted people to be with me, or at least like me...

Moana couldn't speak. She grabbed Maui, who was still in Sharkhead appearance and descended back to the land.

"What're you waiting for? We have to get him!" Maui said as he turned himself back into a human appearance.

"Wait... he's... suffering..." Moana said

"Yeah! Suffering from my beatings!" Maui said.

"No, I mean he's suffering emotionally..." Moana said. "He's in pain..."

"But Moana," Maui said as he closed his eyes and raised his finger to make a point. "Before you go, just remember, you cannot communicate with Kapu'uila like how you did it with Te Ka. So just don't-" He noticed that Moana was missing. "Where'd she go? Moana? Moana!" He saw Moana walking towards him as she made the path with ocean water above the surface, in the air, and towards Kapu'uila.
