Chapter 46: Death of Moana

"Moana...?" He asked again. The figure was still. No movement. "Moana... Moana!" Maui crawled up to her quickly and held her up in a bridal position as his knees were still buried in the sand. Moana's eyes were open just a little bit. This attack was too powerful that she was slowly dying even though the wisps tried to protect her from Kapu'uila's hammering fist. "Moana! Moana! Speak to me! Moana! Please! Moana!" Maui exclaimed as he shook her.

Moana feebly raised her hand and held Maui's cheek. "Maui..." She said weakly. It was the weakest voice Maui ever heard from Moana.

"Yes, it's me, Maui." Couple teardrops ran down from Maui's eyes. Some teardrops even got on Moana's hand. "Why... why did you do that?"

"To... protect you..." Moana said.

"But why?! You didn't have to!" Maui yelled, not in anger, but in resentment brought up by despair.

"Don't... don't say that..." Moana said, still weak. "I'm... I'm glad that... you're alive... you... could've... gotten hit..."

"But then you got hit instead!" Maui exclaimed.

"I'd rather get hit... than to see you get hit... and sorry... about earlier..." Moana managed to apologize even in her critical moment in her life.

"No, it's my fault! Mine! Me and my stupid stubbornness!" Several more teardrops started to race down from his eyes to his chin.

"It's not... your fault... Maui..." Moana's voice became even weaker.

"Moana... please. Stay strong!" Maui begged as he held her desperately.

"Maui... I still love you..." Moana let out a warm smile despite how much weaker she's becoming.

"I... I love you too." More teardrops ran down from his face and dropped on her cheek.

"This may... be my last... time... saying it..." She was barely able to hold her eyelids open.

"No... what do you mean...? Don't say that... why would you say that? Oh... this is my fault... if I did dodge it in time..." Maui regretted not being able to dodge a hammering fist by Kapu'uila.

"No... it's not... your fault... I'm glad... you're alive..." Moana started to lose consciousness.

"Moana... please live... I can't go on without you!" Maui begged.

"Maui..." She took off the necklace and hung it around Maui's neck with her very last strength. "Take it... fight Kapu'uila... and save this world once again..." Moana said as she hung the necklace around Maui. "Please... for me..." Maui couldn't say anything but let her caress his face... until her hand dropped onto the ground.

Maui froze as her arm collapsed on the sand. Maui slowly held her chest up to his ears. He heard nothing. He felt no pulse. "Moana... Moana... Moana no... no... no! Moana! No!" He shook her even harder. "Moana! Please! MOANA! PLEASE!" It was no use. Moana was no longer... alive. She couldn't respond to anything. "NO! MOANA!" Maui hugged her tight. Moana's face was so cold that his warm cheeks cooled down. His tears ran down from his eyes, down to his face, and shed on Moana's cheek, hair, and shoulders. "No... Moana... please... I really love you... oh... I... I'm sorry..." He sobbed for a while. Watching this, Pua couldn't hold back his tears. Heihei stopped pecking on the ground, realized what was going on, and plopped on the ground silently.

Still sobbing, Maui gently put down Moana's corpse against the bed of sand. He kept whispering "I'm sorry..." next to Moana. While the tears ran down from his eyes, he grabbed the broken oar that was sticking up next to her, and threw it far away from them and screamed to the sky, "WHY?!" He grabbed his hair and covered his face with his arms, and bent down over Moana again to beat himself down as he felt responsible for her death.

When his sob calmed down, he stood up and walked around to pick up some flowers as he sniffed and wiped his tears. Pua and Heihei stayed with the Moana, still squealing and sobbing weakly with despair as Moana wouldn't wake up no matter how much the time passed. Pua got into Moana's cold arms to be cuddled by her for the last time. Maui returned with bushes of hibiscus and night jasmine. He gently placed them around her, grabbed several night jasmines and had her hold it. He tried to hold back his tears, but he couldn't help but grab and bawling over her cold face. He wanted her cheeks to be warm again, not because his tears are making it warm, but because she's alive. "Moana... please wake up..." Maui blubbered as hoped even though it wouldn't happen no matter how long the time passed, or no matter how much he begged. "You've done everything... for me... you always listened... to my favors... please... you don't have to take my orders anymore... I just want you... to be with me... please..."

After sobbing for a while, a blue light surrounded the small portion of land they were in. Maui noticed it after it went around the land a few times. What is that? Maui thought to himself. He cautious walked towards the beach to see what the light was. He leaned in and squinted his eyes to see the light more clearly. It looks like a Manta ray. It definitely had a form of Manta ray. It swam in circles a few times and then it swam up to the beach, a few feets away from Maui, and climbed up the sand to transform into a human form. Maui's eyes were opened wide in surprise and disbelief. No voice came out of his mouth. The human form was an old lady that had long, wavy white hair. She carefully approached Moana's corpse, bent down, and gently caressed her forehead with sad eyes, but proud smirk. She seemed very motherly towards Moana. Is that... her ancestor...? Grandmother? Great-grandmother? Maui thought to himself. One of his choices was right. The old lady was Grandma Tala.

"I never knew she would sacrifice her own life for her lover's life... or even peace in this world," Grandma Tala said as she transformed into a human in ghost form.

"Who... who are you?" Maui asked.

"Her grandmother," Grandma Tala replied as she pointed at Moana.

"How did you... appear?" Maui was confused.

"Even though I'm dead, doesn't mean I can't watch over her," Tala replied. "I'm with her every time as a manta ray."

"Did you see-"

"Yes, I saw the whole battle," Tala said before Maui was able to finish his sentence. "And I saw her pushing you away so you wouldn't get hit."

"I'm sorry... I couldn't protect her," Maui said.

"No one can blame you," Tala replied. "She's very self-sacrificing. No one can fix that. She puts everyone before herself."

Maui stayed silently for a while as he smoothly stroke Moana's head with regret and self-resentment. He wanted to say something to Moana, but he knew that she was not going to be able to hear Maui's words. He kept quiet. If he let out a word, he would want her to be alive, which would make him even more depressed.

"Why don't you say something to her?" Tala asked, knowing how Maui felt.

"I don't know..." he replied even though he knew the answer.

"If you already miss her," Tala started. "I know how to revive her."

"What? Really?" Maui jumped by Tala's suggestion.

"I'm her grandmother," Tala replied. "I can pretty much do anything for her. She's still young to end her life like this. Even her parents are alive and well at this moment."

"Please, tell me how!" Maui begged as he went down on his knees.

Tala was a little surprised that a demigod was on his knees in front of her. She also felt bad saying the suggestion since it would be tragic for Maui. "Well, there is only one way..." she started.

"What is the way? Please tell me..." Maui begged even more desperately.

"You have to know one thing..." Tala said.

"What... what is it?" Maui asked.

"You have to sacrifice your demigod status," Tala said cautiously. "Yes... you will no longer be able to shapeshift using your hook, your strength will reduce drastically, your tattoos will no longer be sentient, cannot perform illusions, and will lose your immortality. Just to save Moana, you will need to sacrifice all of them. Will you do it?"

Maui thought for a moment. He suddenly remembered what Moana told him after they retrieved his hook: Maybe the gods found you for a reason. Maybe the ocean brought you to them because it saw someone who was worthy of being saved. But the gods aren't the ones who make you Maui. You are. Her words kept circulating in his head.

She's right... Maui thought. Just because I'm not a demigod, that doesn't mean I'm not Maui anymore. I can still live as Maui with mortal status. More than all, what will I do without Moana? Sure, I'm a demigod, but what will my life mean without her existence? She's the one who helped me realize how to live as myself no matter what I am or what I possess. So what if I'm not a demigod anymore? Yes. She's the one. One I have been looking for my whole life. One who accepts me for what I can do for people. One who truly believes that I am worthy. One who reminds me that I'm special no matter what I am or am not, what I have or don't have. Maui nodded slowly and looked around. Mini Maui hugged him and Maui gently tapped. "I love you too, buddy." He faced the Ocean, who nodded once. He looked at Pua and Heihei. Pua gave him sad eyes yet warm smile. Heihei squawked a little quietly. "All right, Lady Tala. Please do it."

"Are you sure about this?" Tala asked one more time for confirmation. "You will lose your demigod status, cannot do anything, and will be mortalized. You cannot use your hook, and you cannot live forever anymore."

"I'm sure. Eternal life won't mean anything without her," Maui confirmed confidently.

"All right, dear brave soul," Tala said as she let her palms out, one towards Maui, and one towards Moana. "I'll get started..." A few moments after Tala finished her sentence, she started to chant. As she chanted, greenish-blue light started to circulate around Moana, Maui, and Tala. As the greenish-blue light became solid, it circulated faster and faster, and then it disappeared just like that, along with Moana, Maui, and Tala.

They reached the spirit realm and realized everyone was floating around. "Whoa..." Maui said as he looked around. He was floating, but for some reason, he was able to stand up still.

"First time to the spirit realm?" Tala asked. Maui nodded, still amazed by the surrounding. "This is part of the process of reviving Moana."

"Yes. Please start," Maui begged. "I want her alive again as soon as possible."

"You must care for her so much," Tala said as she prepared. "Then I'll begin." Tala chanted again. Mini Maui hugged him tight and Maui gently tapped him, exchanging their last farewell. Maui gulped and Mini Maui went back to its original position as the silver light surrounded him. He felt his energy drain from him as the silver light became brighter. The light became brighter, and brighter, and brighter, and brighter. When it became bright enough, it started to detach from Maui. By then, he no longer felt any herculean strength, nor he was able to animate his tattoos; all of his demigod strength drained down to zero.

Tala chanted a different song, which brought Moana's soul. Her soul was clear and silently stood up with her eyes closed. Maui's eyes opened wide as Moana's soul came into his vision. He wanted to go run to her and hug her, but his conscience and body didn't let him. Tala allowed the silver light to surround Moana's soul, and then when the silver light fully entered into her soul, the soul started to let out pure blue color and her eyes began to open. Then she slowly went into her body in the same position as she was lying down...
