Chapter 42: "Internal" Pain

Moana and Maui sailed even with the stinging burn pain were still left on their skin. But bearable now, Moana dunk her self into the ocean to relieve the pain for a moment. While she put her whole body except face in the ocean, some of the dead skin started to fall off her. Moana was disgusted by her dead skin that floated away from her boat.

"Kid, that's gross!" Maui said as he watched the dead skin peel off of her.

"I would like to tell you 'be quiet' in the ruder way," Moana said. "But I won't." Maui blew a raspberry to Moana. "Put that tongue back in. Before I chop it off..." Moana said cruelly.

"Geez, chief, so cruel," Maui said, sulking once more. Mini Maui gave another point for Moana.

"Plus, the reason why I have these dead skin was to save you from the scald by Pumanu," Moana snapped. "You need to thank me. You're welcome~"

"I didn't even thank you, yet," Maui said.

"So I said you're welcome in advance," Moana said. "By the way, why isn't your skin dead? Or why don't you have dead skin? Or... how should I word it?"

"I'm a demigod," Maui said as he showed his arm and chest muscles. "My skin is hard as steel."

"But your mind is not," Moana said with a peal of slight laughter and pulled herself up from the water. "So, are we almost there?" Moana asked as she squeezed her skirt and hair to get the water off of them.

"We should be there in a moment," Maui said.

"Boy, am I hungry," Moana said as she picked up the apple and bit into it.

"Need something to drink?" Maui said as he cracked the coconut open with his head. Moana watched him with her eyes wide open.

"How do you do that?" Moana asked as she received the other half of the coconut shell.

"I'm a demigod," Maui answered as he showed off his arm and chest muscles.

"Guess I'll be hearing that for a while now," Moana said as she pretended to hate it. "Muscle-up, Buttercup, we're here! Kautangi!" Moana said as the island was caught in her sight. Then she snickered and said, "Get it? Muscle-up?"

"Okay, I deserve the point because that was a bad joke," Maui said to both Moana and Mini Maui. Mini Maui shook his head. "What? Oh, come on!"

"All right, let's get ready for this," Moana said. "I don't know what awaits us, but it has to be quick."

"It will be quick when we find him or her as early as possible," Maui said as he jumped out of the boat with Pua in his right arm and Heihei in his left arm. "Let's go, buddies."

Moana cracked her hands, back, and ankles to loosen up her muscles after a long time of wayfinding. "Let's get this thing started all right."

"Dang, kid, you're getting so spicy," Maui said as he raised his fishhook after he transferred Heihei to his right arm.

"Things will get spicy when we find the one we need to find," Moana said as she raised her oar.

Just like they did on previous islands, they walked around to search for the next target. Despite the large sound of roaring waves, they heard a sniffling sound. Moana and Maui faced each other, thinking that the sniffling sound came from another.

"Kid, were you crying?" Maui asked.

"No, I thought it was you," Moana said.

"So, there's gotta be someone else on this island," Maui said.

"Let's follow that sound," Moana suggested. Maui agreed and followed the sniffling sound. The weird thing was that the close they went near that sound, more they did not want to hear the crying sound.

"Is it just me, or does the crying sound sounds really, really annoying...?" Maui asked as he frowned and gritted his teeth as more he listened to the crying noise.

"I hate listening to it too," Moana agreed. "It feels like I'm getting irritated. Ugh! This is the worst voice I've ever heard!"

"Tell me about it..." Maui said, continuing to frown.

"But we still need to find the person," Moana said. "Either it's the person we need to save with the charm, or with our own hands. Come on." She led the way no matter how the crying voice annoyed her.

When the crying sound was clear, they saw a young girl around Moana's age crying as she covered her face. Her hair was long, straight down below her waist. "Excuse me..." Moana cautiously walked up to her and called her. "Excuse me... are you... all right...?"

When she uncovered her face, her eyes were clear, her lips were red, and her nose was petite. She reminds me of Hakatau... Moana said. Even though the girl was beautiful, she was still irritated by the one she was reminded of. Still, she kept her cool and tried to soothe her, "What's your name...?" Moana asked.

The girl wiped her tears but did not say anything.

"What's your name...?" Moana asked once more.

"Waiata," the girl replied. She spoke so low that it sounded like a whisper to her. But Moana was still annoyed with her voice.

"What's wrong?" Moana asked, holding her irritation.

"Just... sad..." Waiata spoke low, still getting on Moana's nerves.

"Would you like some help?" Moana offered. By the time she spoke this sentence, Maui arrived.

"It's fine..." Waiata said. "It'll pass..." Now both Moana and Maui were irritated. "Will you please stay with me? I would like to invite you to a meal."

Moana and Maui both glanced at each other. Instead of words, they used their facial expressions and head gestures to communicate. Moana lifted her eyebrows once as her pupils pointed at Waiata with her head also flicking towards that direction. Maui closed his eyes, lifted his eyebrows, and gently nodded.

"Sure, we'll join you for a meal," Moana said, trying to smile.

"Aww, thank you so much!" Waiata spoke as she stood up and raised her voice. Moana and Maui faked their smile to hide their irritation.

"No problem," Moana replied as she continued to fake her smile.

When they arrived at her hut, Waiata fried them some fish, boiled grains, and sliced the fruits.

"It's so nice to have guests here now," Waiata spoke as she cooked. "I've been lonely here on this island for such a long time. I moved out of my home because no one liked me and treated me like garbage." Moana and Maui frowned when she was not looking at them. When she turned to their direction, they faked their smile again. "Where are you guys from? I'm sure it's not this island."

"We're from Motunui," Moana replied, trying to be nice.

"I'm Maui, the demigod of wind and sea. This is Moana, chief of Motunui." Maui introduced himself and Moana.

"That's nice!" Waiata squealed in amazement. Maui frowned this time as it hurts his eardrums. "Is something wrong, Maui?"

"No! Nothing's wrong!" Maui said.

The smile on Waiata's face disappeared. Even after she served them the meal, she continued to rant about her life. "So only person who cared about me was my father. All the other villagers took advantage of me and..."

Maui's face was full of a frown as he coughed as he choked on his grains.

"You don't like my voice, don't you?" Waiata asked angrily.

"No, no, no! It's not that really!" Maui said.

"You know what?" Waiata said as she stood up. "You guys are just like the others, hating my voice! And now, you guys caught me on a bad day! I'll make you guys deaf for the rest of your lives!" She concentrated, flapped her wings out, causing a large gust of wind that blew the hut away.

"That's the one!" Moana said. "She's the soul we need to seal." Moana pulled the charm out.

"Not gonna let you do that!" Waiata screamed. "Shards of screech!" She exclaimed and screeched that hurt Moana and Maui's eardrums. The screech was also very powerful that they were being pushed away from her.

"Maui! Do something!" Moana said as she covered her ears.

"Moana! Do something!" Maui said as he covered his ears.

"Awhina Poto!" Moana exclaimed. A yellow marble of light exerted from the pile and placed a charm on their ears.

"I present to you, the power of hearing." The wisp announced. They were now able to hear, but no sounds hurt them. Still, her screech was so forceful, more powerful than a storm that it seemed hard for them to go near her.

"The sound is taken care of but now this..." Maui said. "She never stops!"

"Hah!" Moana grunted as she threw a rock at Waiata's wings. It didn't hurt her, but it did make her angry.

Frowning and gritting her teeth, Waiata dived towards Moana, as she screeched with her eyes tightly shut. Moana squinted as the gust of wind surrounded her. When Waiata got close to her, Moana swung her oar as forcibly as possible, causing Waiata to knock out and fly few meters away from them and stay on the ground, unconscious.

As Moana placed the charm on fainted Waiata, the image showed in the heads of Moana and Maui.

Waiata dreamt of being a singer as she loved to sing since she was a little girl after she heard plenty of birds sing near her. Whenever she heard the birds chirp, she wished that she could sing as well as the birds. Being moved by the birds' beautiful voices, she became dedicated to be like birds, sing for people and make them happy with her songs. She would sing in front of everyone, but only people who paid attention to her was her father as her mother passed away when she was still a baby. Her father fed her so well so that she does not get a sore throat or any neck or throat related sickness. He even had another singer in town to coach her singing voice.

Throughout her childhood and early teenage times, she practiced singing almost every day so that she can sing higher, she drank medicines every day that made her throat and vocal chord healthier, and she tried hard to not catch a cold. However, no matter how much she tried, her singing was not able to impress anyone. Every time she sang, she would be ignored, or even be called a 'crazy singing girl'.

Right when she was about to give up out of depression, Kapu'uila placed a charm on her so that she can sing in tunes that people will fall in love with her singing voice, and her throat and vocal chord will not be damaged no matter how much she sings. After that, she quickly became a celebrity in her village. Her singing was so beautiful that people did not want to stop listening to her singing. She was able to sing all day without any problem. She took a few meal breaks, but that was about it.

Finally achieving her dream, she wanted to stay home for the rest of her life and please the villagers' eardrums. When Kapu'uila pleaded to go with her, she rejected. When she rejected him after begging and begging, Kapu'uila had it with her and took her power away. He made her voice so sharp that people's eardrums were hurting every time she spoke, no matter how quiet it was.

As no one loved her anymore, Waiata fell into despair. She stayed silent from then and during the time she was imprisoned, and right after Moana and Maui appeared in front of her.

"Oh geez," Moana said. "Not being able to achieve the dream is pretty depressing."

"Boy, do I feel bad for criticizing her voice..." Maui said with his heart full of guilt.

"Did you ever had a dream?" Maui asked.

"For now, it's saving everyone from Kapu'uila," Moana said, determined to complete the mission.

"Any dreams before that, chief?" Maui asked.

"Restore Te Fiti's heart," Moana said. "Now, enough talk, we got two more people we need to save. Let's go back to the boat."

"Yes, chief," Maui smirked and followed after her.

In the middle of the ocean, Moana decided where to go next since the next islands are about the same distance as where they are right now. "I guess it wouldn't matter... next island will be... Atapua... I actually like the sound of that... all right! Next stop, Atapua!!"
