Chapter 38: Changing Fate

A/N: Sorry for the long wait! Also, I made some adjustment in the previous chapters and will continue to do so, so that it sounds more interesting. If you get a chance, feel free to look over!

Moana looked around with the oar in her hand to see if anything on the island looked similar to any of the islands that were still occupied by the creatures. But she did not see any resemblance. "Only if the map also showed where we are..." Moana said under her breath desperately.

"How did we end up here in the first place...?" Maui asked. "You said there was a tornado, right?"

When Maui mentioned the word 'tornado', Moana's head reminded her the nightmare she had where Motunui was being destroyed by some creatures. "No, NOO!" Moana screamed in fear and stress. "No... no..." she whimpered. What if the dream is true? What if something did happen to Motunui without even me realizing it?!

"Kid? What's wrong?" Maui asked, flustered.

"I remembered a bad dream I had..." Moana said. "Motunui was being destroyed... oh, Maui, what are we gonna do?"

"Now, Moana, calm down," Maui shushed as he calmed her down by embracing her. "Nothing would've happened to Motunui. We got the creature, and the other creatures have no way to reach the island. Plus, on the map, it doesn't say that any monster is on Motunui. Everything is all right."

Moana, now calm, stood up. "Thanks, Maui," Moana thanked.

"You're welcome," Maui said with a heart-warming smile across his face. "Now, let's figure out what's going on, shall we?" Maui suggested. Moana nodded.

As they walked around, Maui noticed a large cave. Before Maui can either walk or away, or enter, or even do something, the cave inhaled them in a speed of light. After that, Maui lost conscious.

While Moana was still searching, she said to Maui, who wasn't there, without turning her head, "Maui, I have been theorizing, maybe we weren't sent away that far. After all, it was just a small tornado. It wouldn't have sent us anywhere so far from where we left off. Also, according to the map, there are three pointy peaks, unlike other islands. I think I'm starting to see it over there." Moana pointed at the three pointy peaks. "I wonder what that stone mountain is from the above. Maui?" She finally turned back. Maui wasn't there. "Maui?! Where are you?! This isn't funny! Maui!"

When Maui woke up, he did not see anything. He waved his hand in front of him. Am I blind...? Maui thought to himself. But then, he saw few sparks of light floating around. "I guess I'm not," Maui said to himself. However, he wondered what those sparks were. It looked like little fireflies he used to see at Motunui whenever it turned dark. "I need to see better..." Maui said as he lit up his fishhook. However, the only thing he was able to see was the pattern on his fishhook. "Moana...?" He called. "Moana?!" He called louder, only to hear an echo back.

Maui has completely lost in contact with Moana. He looked for her everywhere as he transformed into a giant hawk, not knowing that he was in completely different place. However, even with his birds-eye vision, he did not seem to find her anywhere. Stupid cave... Maui thought. I just have to fly around and get used to seeing in the dark... he thought as he flew around, but he ended up bumping into the bumpy, rocky, and sturdy walls and hurt his head. "Ow..." Maui groaned as he rubbed his head to relieve the pain.

Then he remembered the fireflies flying around. He decided to follow it. When he followed the firefly-looking things, they seemed to go in a direction where there is an open space. As long as I can get to somewhere else... Maui thought.

Moana realized that Maui's footsteps were gone from far back. She followed the trail of her own footprint, until she saw Maui's footprints. She looked around to see where Maui have went that the footprints would stop right there on that spot. When she laid her vision on the cave, the cave immediately sucked her in and made her land on the same spot where Maui first landed. She plopped down with a slight groan.

"Who's there?!" Maui's voice echoed throughout the cave.

"Maui?" Moana's voice echoed back.

"Moana?" Maui's voice echoed back again.

"It is you, Maui!" Moana's voice was very welcoming. "I was looking all over for you! Then I got sucked into this cave as soon as I looked at it!"

"Me too!" Maui said. "By the way, I can't see anything in here besides all the fireflies-looking thingies."

Moana looked all around. She saw some fireflies-looking thingies floating around inside the cave. "Yeah, I can see them too."

"I wonder what those are," Maui said.

"Well, don't ask me," Moana said.

While they were having this whole conversation, they were slowly walking around to find something out inside the dark cave that even Maui's fishhook did not work. They eventually bumped into each other. Maui groaned and Moana yelped.

"Oh, it's just you," Maui said.

"Where are you? I just lost you," Moana said as she swung her hand gently, but slapped Maui in the arm.

"Ouch! Why did you slap me for?" Maui asked.

"I didn't meant to slap," Moana said as she reached for his hand, just by her sense. "I just wanted to find you. We need to stay together." Moana locked her arms to his.

"Geez, kid, so eager to hold my arm," Maui said with a sly smile covered by the darkness around him. Moana kicked him gently on his leg. Maui snickered by her playful kick. Moana literally dragged him to figure out what the fireflies-looking things were. When she got closer and reached for it, it disappeared with a swooning sound.

"Wisps...?" Moana asked herself.

"Probably," Maui answered for her.

The one that disappeared appeared a bit farther away from them. "They're definitely wisps..." Moana said to her again.

"Wisps? They exist?" Maui asked.

"I only heard of them too," Moana replied. "Come on, let's go follow it." Moana dragged Maui to follow the wisps. All the wisps formed a line or a curve every time Moana got close to the nearest one. They were definitely leading Moana and Maui to something or somewhere. As they continued to follow, the amount of wisps started to decrease one by one, until the last one vanished and the darkness started to clear. They looked around as the darkness cleared. Everywhere was covered with woods. Other than that, it was just an empty space.

"What is this place...?" Maui asked.

"Looks completely different from the outside," Moana said. "Sure I only looked at the cave for a brief second and it sucked me in there-"

"You too?" Maui asked.

"What do you mean 'You too?'" Moana asked. "It happened to you?"

"Yes," Maui answered. "It looked like a stone cave."

"Yes, it was a stone cave," Moana said. "Inside... it looks like a house made of woods."

"There's nothing in here..." Maui said.

As soon as he finished his words, something emerged from the floor as it said growled in a really deep voice.

"Who's there?" Maui took stand as he held his fishhook.

A creature emerged from the floor. The creature looked like a large bear, but it was covered with wooden patterns and barks instead of fur.

"I got this," Maui smirked as he charged after it. What happened immediately after is that he was smacked by the wooden bear and smashed against the wall. Instead of worrying about him, she crossed her arms, shook her head, and tsked repeatedly. "I thought you're supposed to help me," Maui groaned as he stood up.

"Like you always said, Maui. Don't be so reckless," Moana said.

"Since when did you become more careful...?" Maui asked.

"Get back up and fight again, strategically this time, while I find a charm," Moana said, avoiding his question.

"Yes, chief," Maui said and then transformed into a giant hawk.

Moana looked throughout the charms to look for a bear looking creature. She would normally only look out of three or four charms, but she had to look through all twenty-six charms. She looked carefully, but she saw nothing like bears. "Any luck, chief?" Maui called.

"Maui, I think it's either being controlled by something, or it needs to be broken down!" Moana called. "There's no bear-looking thing out of all the charms!"

"I'll take it down!" Maui said and transformed into a giant hawk.

"You're NOT doing this alone! Pua! Heihei! Stay back!" Moana said as she pulled out her oar. She ran towards the wooden bear creature as she let out her shout of concentration. She smashed the wooden bear in the leg. Neither the oar nor the wooden bear was broken, or even got a single scratch. Only the shock was so hard that the vibration made her hand feel numb. "Ah-hah..." Moana groaned in pain.

Maui head butted against the wooden bear, but he ended up hurting his head only. He held it to stop his head from pounding in pain. "What kind of wood is this hard? My skull is going to split in half..." Maui groaned in pain as he was kneeling down from the impact. As Moana helped him back up, she noticed that the part of the wall was nearly dangling, and behind the dangling wall, she saw an open space. Maybe...? Moana thought. "Maui, are you strong enough to take down the wall?"

"Probably," Maui said as he slowly stood up.

"Then go take the wall down, I'll take care of the rest," Moana said as she raised her oar.

"Be safe," Maui said. He fully trusted her. He ran to the dangling wall and banged on it so that the wall can collapse. "It's! Wooden! Why! Is it! So! Hard?!" Maui spike every time he banged on the wall.

Moana threw her oar under the wooden bears foot. It stepped on the oar, slipped and fell backwards on its back. As it collapsed, it caused a huge impact that helped Maui tilt the wall even more that it eventually started to fall. Moana noticed it, so she ran to Maui, grabbed him in the arm, and ran away from the falling wall as quickly as she can as she also grabbed Pua and Heihei with her other arm.

There was a large thud behind them. The wooden bear was crushed under the wall. They saw a green wisp emerging from under the fallen wall. It had the shape of the creature they were looking for. "Before you can seal me," the wisp said. "Allow me to help you find the rest of the creatures."

"What is that thing saying?" Maui asked, totally confused.

"Do I need to teach you Maori again?" Moana asked Maui with a sarcastic smile across her face. "How do we trust you?"

"If I don't keep my promise, you can seal me whenever you want," the wisp said. "I really needed your help. I am the one who sent the tornado so that you both can come to this island."

"Why did you-" Moana spoke until wisp cut her off.

"Because I needed you that badly," the wisp said.

"And... how do you know we were on a mission to capture you guys...?" Moana asked.

"I think it has been a while now since every sixty-six of us were released," the wisp said. "Some of us are just as intelligent as humans. We want you to avenge us for what Kapu'uila did to us."

"All right, I think I understand," Moana said.

"I will lead you to every creatures you must capture," the wisp said. "Some likes to play tricks, so be careful."

"Thank you," Moana said, even though she did not fully trust the wisp.

"I should be thanking you," the wisp said. "This way." The wisp enlarged itself, and split itself so that it can lead Moana and Maui to the creatures that they're supposed to capture.

Maui revisited the map to see how many creatures they were supposed to find. It suddenly increased to five, including that wisp... oh well I guess it's fine... Maui thought as he rolled the map back.

The wisp first led to the forest, where there was a large green wisp. It transformed into the shape as it was marked on the charm, and voluntarily sealed itself inside the charm. "Well, that wasn't half bad," Moana said.

"Have you been hearing some voices when you seal some of the creatures?" the wisp asked.

"How did you know?" Moana asked, surprised.

"Those voices come from those who are really desperate," the wisp explained. "They always show up as atrocious form, but they are the ones who are damaged the most. They crave for someone who can avenge them."

"Come to think of it," Moana said. "Almost all of the creatures who were very aggressive were trying to kill us."

"You happened to meet Wuruhi?" the wisp asked.

"You know him also?" Moana asked.

"We were all trapped in the same place, after all," the wisp answered. "He was once loved by Kapu'uila, but was abandoned. After we all have been turned into monsters, he was not the nicest one to everyone else. He would be the strongest one to fight. Rest of are either easy, or requires knowledge and/or strength. Thankfully you got Wuruhi taken care of first. As we speak, we got to the second one."

It was another wisp, but this time red. It giggled as it circled around Moana and Maui, but Moana got it and sealed it as she memorized its pattern.

The third one was a purple wisp. Just like the first one, it sealed itself into the charm voluntarily. The fourth one was as mischievous as the second one. It circled around in completely random pattern. Maui transformed into a hawk and sealed it.

"Now, that you have gotten all five of us," the wisp said. "We will be able to guide you into capturing the rest of us. Thank you for finding us in time, and avenge Kapu'uila for all of us." The wisp then sealed itself into the charm.

"Eleven left," Moana said as she counted the rest of the charms.

Maui felt a movement in the map, so he opened to see it. "Hey, kid, take a look at this," Maui said as he showed her the map. "It shows where we are now."

"We needed this," Moana said. Then she let out a deep sigh.

"What's wrong, kid?" Maui asked.

"I just felt bad for not trusting it in the beginning," Moana said.

"Don't let everything make you feel bad," Maui comforted Moana. Moana smiled and jumped into Maui to hug him.

They headed back on the boat to change their destination. "I wonder what else they can help us with..." Maui said as he looked at the five charms.

"I hope they can be a big help," Moana said. Then she counted the red charms that she had in her hand. "Maui... we have five more creatures left," Moana said.

"We're almost there," Maui said in the most hopeful tone.

"The closest one is... Motongu... all right then!" Moana tightened the sail. "Next stop, Motongu!"

"And then we are down to four!" Maui exclaimed happily.
