Chapter 36: Changing Map

A/N: I'm not giving up on this story. Just not yet

Moana opened the map to see which island they needed to go next. However, Moana noticed something different. Very different. Too different that it looked extremely odd to her. "Hey Maui, take a look at this map." Moana handed the map to Maui, who was slurping on his mango. "Before you grab it," Moana added as she withdrew the map. "Wash and dry your hands and mouth."

Maui dipped his hand in the ocean to get the stickiness off of his hand. Then he grabbed the handful of water and splashed it and rubbed it around his mouth. "Okay, lemme see," Maui said as he reached for the map, which she handed back.

"Hmm... oh what?" Maui noticed the map has changed.

"I know, right?" Moana said. "And what so weird about this is that the islands merged together. What if people live there?"

"About how many islands are merged in there?" Maui asked.

"I'm guessing at least three islands," Moana replied. "Because there are now three creatures to catch in that island."

"Well I think that makes the job easier since all monsters are aligned in one place?" Maui said.

"Gotta be," Moana said. "Then there would be less time to sail around and save some time before other creatures cause further mischiefs."

"Let's just hope that the locations of the island does not change anymore," Maui said. "Or else, it's going to be more painful in the butt."

"More painful than the time when the ocean shot a blow dart on your butt?" Moana asked, but then she snickered immediately after she finished her sentence because she also thought what she said was ridiculous.

"Chief, you've been telling horrible jokes these days," Maui said. "So weird side I see from you. That's supposed to be my thing."

"You probably influenced me," Moana replied, trying to cover her burning face with her hair. Pua sighed and shook its head.

"Well let's hurry up before the map changes, yeah?" Maui suggested.

"Let's," Moana replied with a stern face across her face.

Moana and Maui, they change their mood so quickly. At first, they were all fun and games, but they suddenly changed to all business and sped up their boat. Even Pua found it interesting how they can switch the atmosphere just like that. Heihei... well Heihei... he was mindlessly pecking at a pole.

Without further ado, Moana, Maui, Pua, and Heihei reached the island. Moana kept staring at the map because she was worried that the geography would change again. Then she wondered if the map ever changed once while they were on this voyage. Before she asked Maui about it, Maui was able to read her facial expression, even just by peeking over at her, so he answered before she was able to ask: "You know kid, maybe we just never realized that the map was changing because we were too focused on other things."

"That can be the reason why," Moana said. "Now that I think about it, it seemed like this section of the map was not the same all the time. I think I was doubting myself because there were only small changes that I think I did not recognize it the last time I took a look at this map."

"Plus, we're so focused on one island that we can't pay attention to the whole thing," Maui said. "Map is not easy to be read in the short period of time. Plus, that map is supposed to be at least three times bigger than the regular map."

"I knew that," Moana said. "I think we should just-"

Before she was able to finish her sentence, Maui grabbed her and leaped away from the area they were standing on. Moana was confused for a second, but then she realized that Maui saved her from something that she did not notice. Maui's eyes were not glued to Moana. It was glued to the place where they were before Maui jumped. "That was a close one," Maui said as he breathed slowly.

"What happened...?" Moana asked, more startled than ever.

"I don't know but if we were still standing there, that coral would have killed us," Maui said as he stood up.

"Whoa..." Moana breathed by the gigantic view of the coral. It was as tall as a palm tree. "But how and why did those corals pop out of nowhere?"

As soon as she finished her question, the coral started to split the land, causing it to divide the land into pieces. "What's going on??!!" Maui asked.

Something inside told Moana to look at the map. She reached for the map and opened it, and there it was. The map was changing as the corals were dividing the land. "Maui, look!" Maui watched the map as the part of it altered. They both thought it was amazing until they remembered one thing.

"OUR BOAT!" They exclaimed at each other and faced the way where their boat was. It was starting to get far away from the island.

"Hang on, kid!" Maui said as he transformed into a giant hawk. Moana grabbed Pua and Heihei so that Maui cam take all of them back to their boat.

They managed to get back to their boat, but the island was still raging along with the corals that emerged from beneath the ocean. Moana took this chance to look at the map once again. The pieces of lands on the maps were being torn apart and rotating. The monster labels were moving along with them. When the roaring sound of the changing land started to die out, the land pieces on the map were no longer moving. The island was now separated into two: one with one creature and one with two creatures.

"Oh great," Maui said. "I was happy to catch them all at once."

"We'll just have to do this the traditional way then," Moana said. "This time, let's drag the boat on the land so that it doesn't flow away again."

"Good idea," Maui said. "But I can pick it up and put it in the middle of the island."

"That's the better idea," Moana said. "Let's sail now before the island change again."

"Yes, chief," Maui replied and they sailed back to the island.

Maui picked up the boat after they docked, and they both started to look around to find a great spot to put their boat on. "There should be a place where there are a lot of space to put our boat on..." Moana said to herself as she looked around.

"How about over there?" Maui suggested as he pointed at the wide open area with a lot of shades. "It looks roomy and there are shades too. Our food wouldn't spoil if we leave it at a cool place like that."

"Good idea," Moana said. "Place it over there then, please." Maui did so. "Now, let's find these poor creatures and have them seal safely inside these charms."

"What's with the adjective 'poor'?" Maui asked.

"They wouldn't have to suffer if it wasn't for Kapu'uila," Moana said as she scrolled up the map again. "Now come on, we cannot waste any more time. We don't know when the island is going to change again." Moana marched as she picked up Pua and Heihei.

"You got it chief," Maui said as he marched after her. Moana stayed alert as she marched and looked around to see if there are anything that may suddenly attack them.

"Hey kid," Maui called. "Why don't I hold Pugley for ya? You can use the other arm to old your oar."

"You have my oar?" Moana asked as she turned back.

"For a chief, you're pretty irresponsible with your weapon," Maui said as he crossed his arms with his hook and Moana's oar in it, and shook his head.

"Here," Moana quickly exchanged Pua with her oar and turned away to hide her blushing face. She always admits whenever she makes a mistake, however whenever she is embarrassed of her mistakes, the embarrassment goes on for a long time. Even so, being a good leader also means that they must be responsible for their mistakes. But let's try to not make any more of those mistakes again, Moana! She thought as her walking speed increased by embarrassment.

There's still a room to grow, Maui thought as he smirked as he saw Moana speeding up due to embarrassment. She still needs to learn that no mortals can be perfect. That kid is still innocent on some sides.

Moana took out the charms and looked everywhere, but she could not see anything or anyone that resembles the figure on the charms. She stopped as she heard something. "Maui, do you hear that?"

"Hear what, kid?" Maui asked.

"Shh!" Moana shushed so that they can hear the noise she just heard. Surely, there were some noises in a distance, and the noise came from the forest. But the closer and closer she listened to it, she decided, "They're people's voices."

"Does that mean that this is an inhabited island?" Maui asked.

"It gotta be," Moana said. "Let's go check it out." They went in the direction where people's voices came from.

People's voices were not cheerful at all. There were some sorrow, rage, and frustration mixed in their voices. Moana started to wonder what those people were talking about. When they reached the location of the voices, there were definitely people with huts and piles of branches next to them.

Moana walked up to them and said, "Greetings, citizens. We're from Motunui. Do we have a permission to ask what's going on here?"

Few turned to Moana and greeted her back. "Hello there, citizen from Motunui," One man said. "I am the chief of this town, Kumu. Since last month or so, we don't remember, but these corals are destroying people's homes."

"They just destroyed ours with our supplies!" The woman said.

"And the geography of this island keeps changing, so that's also the problem with our farms..." Kumu said in a depressed tone.

Then she took out the map again. She was sure that there are three creatures on this area. What if...?! Moana thought. Then she said to Maui, "Maui, what do you think about the possibility that the creatures are under the island?"

"You mean, beneath the ocean?" Maui asked. Moana nodded.

"Well then, I would have to transform into a shark," Maui replied. "You can't do anything under water."

"I really wish I can breathe under the water," Moana said. "It would make this journey much easier."

"Let me see those charms," Maui said. "So that I can memorize what they look like and bring them on the surface so that you can seal them."

"Good idea," Moana said as she handed the charms to Maui.

He looked at three charms, and the frown was printed across his face. "Uggh... octopus looking..."

"Ew... tentacles," Moana and Maui were still traumatized by tentacles from Uhanai.

"And one swordfish looking... and the last one looks like very skinny eel," Maui said.

"Oh no, not eel..." Moana groaned as it reminded her of the giant eel that they murdered violently.

"Kid, I thought you looked at these charms before I did," Maui said. "Didn't these remind you of those horrible memories in the beginning?"

"Now that you say it," Moana said as she shook her head. "I have no idea why those memories popped up in my mind when I was looking at them, until you explained what they were and how they looked like."

"Anyways, I'll be right back," Maui said.

"Be right back before the island changes again," Moana said.

"Gotcha," Maui said. He ran straight to the beach and leap as high as his feet were able too. "CHHEEEEE-HOOOOOO!" Maui exclaimed as he transformed into a shark and dived into the ocean. He looked beneath the island. The island was not that deep in the water. He dived straight towards the beneath the land. Surely, there were two creatures that resembled the figures on the charms; one resembled an eel, and other one resembled a swordfish. He dived deeper into the water to see if there is the last one. Surely, there was an octopus looking creature stuck on the bottom of the land with its tentacles stretched out throughout various ends.

He thrusted through the water towards them immediately. One monster noticed that there was something coming towards them. While the two dived deeper to fight, the octopus monster stretched out its tentacles and released the corals from its tentacles. Ah! Those weren't the corals! They were suction cups! Deformed suctioned cups that are hard enough to thrust the land and switch the island.

The two other creatures started to attack Maui. I see, these two creatures are bodyguards of that monster! Well, I have no choice but to fight them and and capture that octopus somehow...

But it was a piece of cake. All he just needed to do is strike them with his snout with full force and they knocked out immediately. Boring... Maui thought as he chuckled. He grabbed both of them and brought them back so that Moana can seal them. "Did the island change again?" Maui asked.

"Yeah..." Moana said.

"We were able to help people escape but two more houses were destroyed..." Kumu said.

"Those corals were also caused by the creature," Maui said. "That looks like octopus. Those corals are suction cups by its tentacles."

"Ah, I see," Moana said. "I still wonder how it can strike up higher than the palm tree," Moana said.

"I'll knock it out and then come back," Maui said.

"Good luck, Maui," Moana said. "I should take care of these people above the surface, help them calm down."

"Well then, good luck to you too," Maui said.

Maui dived back in the ocean as he turned into a shark.

"Let's help these people calm down, Kumu," Moana suggested.

"Thank you so much, Motunui citizen," Kumu said.
