Chapter 35 - The Resurrection
Maui flew over Maui island, expecting volcanic ash everywhere. But he found it strange, extremely strange, that everything was back to way it was when they came into the island. How is this possible? Maui thought. As he thought about how strange this could be, white zombies freaked him out. What in the world are those??!! He thought as he flew over them. The white zombies did not seem to mind a beetle flying over them, so it made his job easier. Oh, Moana, where in the world are you?
It was really hot in the cave. Her sweat made her whole body feel sticky, drop of sweat dropped down from her chin, and her neck felt moist. "Well, well, well, chief of Motunui. Feeling gross by the sweat you're taking a shower with?"
"What are your intentions...?" Moana asked.
"I want to show you what it looks like when people start obeying you when they never did," Nana said.
"Just because they never obeyed you, that does not give you the right-"
Before Moana was about to finish what she wanted to say, Nana cut her off and said, "Look, chief of Motunui. You don't know how it feels like to receive no respect from your villagers no matter how much you try or sacrifice yourself." Nana's eyes started to be all teary. "They even called me pathetic those-" then something was stuck in her throat that she could not finish her sentence.
Moana, for some reason, started to feel massive sympathy towards her. She wanted to let Nana finish ranting about her life as a new chief.
"They never understood," Nana continued. "They never understood how it feels like to receive sudden and a lot of responsibilities. My father never let me do anything because my older brother was going to be a chief. But then he passed by unknown disease. So I've been trying to learn how to be a perfect chief. Just like how my father was."
"Nana, you don't have to be perfect," Moana said as her voice was no longer filled with grudge. Her voice was rather, trying to soothe Nana.
"That's easy for you to say," Nana said. "You learned how to satisfy people and their needs. But I never did. And some people never, ever, tried to give me a chance to just look over me. They never bothered to look at what I was doing. They already knew that I was not going to be a great chief. Well, how can I if no one is willing to listen to me?"
Moana was quiet.
"I'm going to start over, by forcing people to listen to my orders," Nana said. "Then I'm going to rebuild this island! This is going to be perfect! Everyone listening to their chief's orders, doing what they're supposed to do, feed the village, and welcome visitors."
"Nana, please..." Moana pleaded. "You have to think of another way. This way is too corrupt..."
"You keep still, chief of Motunui," Nana said.
"Yeah... our plan's going perfect, don't destroy it for Nana," the voice said.
Before Moana was able to question the voice, Nana said, "That voice? My new friend named Rangibi. I'll never let you capture this one. Now if you'll excuse me, I have some chief duties that I must fulfill." Nana walked away as she chuckled.
When Nana exited the cave, inside of the cave was much cooler. It's probably the aura from Rangibi, Moana thought as her sweat cooled down.
Meanwhile, Maui got closer to the entrance of the cave. He saw Nana coming out of the cave along with a lava creature behind her back. He quickly hid behind the leaves. She walked around as the zombies were fishing, and trying to replant other plants to make up for the damage of the volcano eruption. When she was far away from the cave, Maui entered the cave to look for Moana. He saw her wrists tied up. He transformed back into a human in front of Moana. Moana was too exhausted to be surprised.
"I knew this would happen," Maui said. "This is why I told you to not be so reckless with your-"
"Stop it, Maui," Moana said. "Change in plans, by the way. We're not going to punish Nana for what she has done."
"What?! Why?!" Maui asked.
"I'll explain that later," Moana said. "And do you know anything about Rangibi?"
"Rangibi?" Maui made sure. "Oh he's a pain in the shoulders. He used his lava to turn people into zombies and control them. He's very power hungry if you know what that means."
"No wonder," Moana said. "Are there any ways we can turn everything back to normal?"
"Well, there is a legend that once he was sealed by Kapu'uila, his damages went back normal," Maui said. "In fact, once creatures are sealed, everything that they damaged that is able to be brought back, they all returned normal. Of course and unfortunately, human lives that have already been taken away couldn't be brought back."
"Only if it wasn't Kapu'uila none of this would've ever happened," Moana said. "Those people didn't need to die."
"Now kid," Maui said as he untied her. "We'll make him pay for it sooner or later. But our first job is rescuing people in this island and capturing Rangibi."
"Let's do this," Moana said as she massaged her arms after being released from the rope she was tied to. "I don't think this is going to involve any action either. So let's make this peaceful as it should be."
********
Nana walked around with Rangibi on her back. Rangibi has special power where he gets to control his aura so that selected people cannot feel it. Nana was one of them. She had no problem at all.
"These people are listening to you now," Rangibi said.
"Makes me satisfied," Nana said.
"Allow me to help you feel much more satisfied than now," Rangibi said.
"And what would that be?" Nana asked.
"Just watch," Rangibi said as he detached from Nana and walked towards one of the citizen. "You're not working properly! You deserve to be punished!" Rangibi screamed at it and kicked it in the face. The zombie writhed and screamed in pain. Rangibi evilly laughed with satisfaction.
However, Nana, not so much. She felt bad for the zombie. Or maybe, she thought this was wrong. Just because she is now able to control them and make them listen to her orders, that does not mean that she would take in pleasure by abusing them.
"You try," Rangibi said to Nana.
"Mmm... maybe next time..." Nana replied sheepishly. "Will you excuse me for a second? I have to check something out in the cave."
"Sure," Rangibi agreed and started to torture other zombies.
Oh... this is wrong... this is so wrong... Nana thought to herself. What am I going to do? I cannot just back up now... I never knew he'd go this far... Then she looked around. Even though they were zombies, she was still able to feel the unmotivated mood among them. What have I done to them...? I need to stop and make things right! But how... Nana started to tear up. She sniffed softly in regret, shame, and guilt.
"Yeah, who knew this would happen?" A sarcastic voice said from above. Nana looked above to see it was Maui... and Moana standing next to him.
"I'm... I'm sorry..." Nana said.
"You know what you've done?!" Maui screamed angrily. Nana started to cry louder.
"Maui, please," Moana calmed him down with a soothing voice. "Let me take care of this." Moana leaned down to her.
"Moana... I'm sorry... please help me..." Nana said between her sniffles.
"Don't worry," Moana said. "We will help you."
"No one's helping anyone!" Rangibi screamed as he popped up next to Nana, Moana, and Maui. Nana screamed. Moana flinched. Maui took his stand with his hook.
"How did you...?!" Nana asked in terror.
"I can't believe you would betray me like that!" Rangibi started to boil. The aura started to be effective against Nana. All three of them started to sweat like crazy. But Maui bravely walked up to him to slam his legs, which was shattered into pieces of magma.
"How... how..." Rangibi groaned.
"I'm sorry I betrayed you..." Nana said. "But I got an epiphany that this is wrong. I will have you sacrifised..."
"Nana! No! I don't want to disappear from this world!" Rangibi said. He was really scared about being sealed again.
"I'm sorry, it has to be this way..." Nana said. "We went too far..."
"After all we've been through?! You're just gonna give up like that?!" Rangibi yelled angrily.
"I realized that this isn't right," Nana said. "I am going to sacrifice you and make things right!"
"No! Don't you dare!" Rangibi said.
"Too late," Moana said as she place the charm on Rangibi. The creature screamed as it sealed into the charm. "You made a right choice, Nana."
Nana nodded slowly.
Unexpectedly, they were all surrounded by open space, with a bright orange background.
"Wha... what just happened?" Nana asked.
"I guess the backstory of Rangibi is being shown," Moana explained.
"What do you mean?" Nana asked.
"Just watch," Maui said. "You'll understand."
"I think that's Rangibi over there," Moana said as she pointed at the skinny boy walking weakly from a distance. "Oh boy, I can already sense his misfortune just by looking at him."
The boy who resembled Rangibi was covered with wounds. His tears ran down from his eyes. While he was walking, he suddenly collapsed.
"Oh, no!" Nana exclaimed as she ran to him to help him.
"Nana! It's no use! It's just a visualization of his past!" Moana said. But that did not stop her from running to him, until she tried to help him up, her hands just went through him.
The boy took out his water bottle, trying to drink, but it was completely empty. Before the second he faced his death, Kapu'uila came to give him full energy and special power that he can create water out of thin air. With that special power, he helped a lot of people who were suffering from dehydration. The thing is, Rangibi was so naive that he did not realize that people were just using him. When he did not create water for some people, because he was exhausted after creating them all day. They eventually abandoned him. Then he was turned into some unknown looking creature, but the shape was familiar to Moana, Maui, and Nana. Instead of creating water, he created lava, with that, he turned so many people into zombies. When he was captured and imprisoned, the zombies turned back as normal human being... then the imagery was over...
I never wanted this unfair treatment... I would've been better if I never met him... Rangibi's voice echoed as the barrier of the imagery disappeared. Nana was still perplexed about what was going on.
Before she can ask, Moana briefly explained it to her, "Rangibi was cursed by Kapu'uila, so he was turned into a monster." Nana nodded as she understood.
As everything cleared, everything else on the island started to go back to way it was. All the volcanic ashes started to disappear, fresh plants, fruits, and vegetables grew back, and palm trees stood tall and proud. More importantly, the white zombies' shells started to break and turn back into humans as they resurrected from their death.
"Wh-what happened to us?" One villager asked.
"I don't remember anything..." Another village commented.
"All you guys can thank Nana," Moana announced. "She's the one who defeated the monster who turned you into zombies and saved you all."
"Wait, what?" Nana asked.
"Nana! Yay! Hail to Nana!" Everyone cheered for Nana as they all surrounded her, who was confused and looked at Moana for answers. Moana smiled at her warmly.
Moana and Maui packed their stuff before leaving. Moana opened the storage, and out popped Heihei with a coconut shell over its head. Moana snickered. Pua also climbed out after Heihei. They filled the storage with fruits and coconuts before sailing out.
"Ready, chief?" Maui asked.
"Ready," Moana replied.
Before Moana stepped into the boat, Nana ran up to their boat. "Moana! Wait!" She ran as fast as her feet were able to.
"What is it, Nana?" Moana asked as Nana stopped behind her.
"Why did you cover for me?" Nana asked. "I mean, I hurt you a lot and, you must've had a lot of grudge against me."
"Sometimes, Nana," Moana started. "People just need to be given an actual chance. I know people did not really want you to be their chief. That made you want to force them to follow you. Isn't that right?" Nana nodded. "I just wanted to give you a chance by letting villagers give you a chance. Plus, you did free them back after all. If you did not change your mind, those people would still be left as zombies. That was the first step. Now the next step is to show your villagers what you've got! I know you can do it."
"Thank you," Nana said. Moana and Nana exchanged hugs.
"I wish you luck, chief Nana," Moana said as she patted her back.
"Sorry about being aggressive back there," Maui apologized sincerely.
"It's okay," Nana said. "No hard feelings."
Moana and Maui sailed out to the sea. Moana and Nana waved at each other until they were not able to see each other anymore. Moana sighed deeply as she sat against the pole.
"Well that didn't end that badly," Maui said. "There's another happy ending."
"Of course," Moana said. "Hopefully, Nana will be able to become a great chief for her people."
"I hope so too," Maui replied.
